  1. First impressions are that the hardware less the battery and wing servos are OK, as for sorting the fuse it's worse than it looks there, the turtle deck is all but of, the tail feathers are flapping loose, the bottom of the back of the fuse is half missing and the wings both have chord wise fractures, across the grain, and they have separated at the centre. all l in all its pretty much more trouble to repair than to build new. Still at least I got the valuable bits back intact
  2. Here we go folks the damming pictures This is what I got back at half seven this morning Now the tree, she was lodged 3/4 of the way up just right of the trunk in this PIC
  3. Another successful atom maiden, it took 3 aborted ground runs to realise the tail wheel is to aggressive and so stopped me getting a proper spin up, so an attempt at a hand launch was called for, 1st attempt not enough head speed in the calm conditions, so to rectify that another member assisted spin up with the draught from h his twin jet this did the trick and a perfect get away was achieved, two nice floaty circuits later and with the power nearly of a near vertical plop down into a very short landing drew a round of applause, all in all a success I'd say many thanks for this one Rich
  4. Finally got to maiden my atom today no wind to speak of and ground handling proved to aggressive resulting in several aborted take off attempts, nothing daunted a hand launch was tried, roll to the left and a broken mast, one quick repair later and as it was apparent I wasn't getting a adequate head speed a twin jet was employed to get the head speed up prior to a second hand launch, result a near perfect take off, rudder control was just about adequate and two nice floaty circuits later I plonked her down for a near zero length landing no further damage. Lessons learnt, remove tail wheel and fit skid, increase rudder throws and possibly increase shims slightly, all in all a success in my books nice one Rich
  5. Posted by Richard Harris on 10/03/2015 17:50:40: On another note regarding the 'completed Atom Gallery' would those who have added a photo mind if I copy them on to my blog page? Thanks Rich Not a problem Richard
  6. Is fairly obvious that's not a genuine futaba servo however that test doesn't really show up any performance differences might have been better to run a genuine one on a Y lead with the fake also I'd like to see a stall and accurate speed comparison no doubt though that the fake would most likely fall well short. Also unless I'm looking at the wrong link the only servo offered in that listing is a hextronik one or at least one with the hextronik badge on it  Edited By Phil Winks on 09/03/2015 21:35:33
  7. Further on my aborted maiden yesterday, and a word of caution to others while trying to get full spin up in my hand to trim the head somewhere near before attempting a take off run I noticed a slight shudder from the head and put it down to the blades not rotating fast enough to get themselves true, however since then just to be certain I've revisited the balancing, one blade was indeed .3 gr heavier, I can only put this down to the varnish used to add weight finally fully drying out, as they were perfect last time I checked, any way this time I've used aluminium adhesive tape to re balance knowing there is no solvent to dry out I'm happy they'll stay as they now are. Fingers crossed the next maiden attempt is tomorrow, so watch this space.

  9. Posted by Stevo on 08/03/2015 21:19:07: Cymaz, I do apologise. Do you still have D.C. in the SouthWest LOL and steam engines, dial up Internet, dot matrix printers and outside loos it was only a year ago I retired my dell latitude with a docking station, floppy drive and parallel port but it was running XP professional for some reason I couldn't even give it away
  10. Thanks lads for the commiserations however I really do have only myself to blame, what really hurts is the hardware I will almost certainly lose, on the plus side we have a set of fibre glass poles at the club, the sort used by western power etc for handling live overhead cables, they will reach the model I'm told so with luck we'll get her down one evening during the week when I'll post the Damming pics some how it looks pretty bad from 40 foot below it though you never know till its in your hand,
  11. I had an attempt at a maiden today, unfortunately the wind was not adequate to get a full spin up to trim the head before committing to flight, though I did at one point for about 10 seconds get that incredible whooshing/ popping noise from the rotors and I'm hooked can't wait for a better day
  12. Well the chance of a maiden flight presented itself and of I went, a few circuits with my trusty E Pioneer to warm the fingers up and then into a trial of the spit, with an assistant for the the first launch she fair ripped herself out of his hand and leapt sky ward with great enthusiasm, pretty much straight and true of the board, immediately I was aware she's a sensitive beast but not uncontrollable, one circuit and try the roll, very axial and frighteningly quick, a half loop and roll out and I found myself way to close to the largest tree on the edge of our patch, most will see where this is going, convinced I'd rolled right way up I pulled up and at half throttle she dived straight into the top of a 40 foot tree, the canopy fluttered earthwards and the rest draped itself over the branch, there is no doubt she is a mess but accessing her without a long pole is an impossibility, so I've pretty much decided its up to the wind to dislodge her, by which time there will be little worth salvaging. such is life I guess, right now I'm thinking that six months after passing my A and with precious little flight time since then it was prob a hasty move building her, mind you let a little time pass and I probably will have another go. though maybe not in time for greenacres, though I will bring the canopy for you all to laugh at oh and the Atom but thats for another thread.
  13. Posted by Donald Fry on 07/03/2015 21:44:17: I did wonder what the offer was, seems a fair offer to me it did to me , but there was another offer in that he had given a counter offer too haven't looked since to see if its gone but I'm guessing not
  14. Posted by leccyflyer on 07/03/2015 20:54:27: That Mick Reeves Hurricane one is a classic. "I ONLY BOUGHT THIS TO SCALE IT UP FOR BUILDING A FULL SIZE REPLICA. " Yeah, right. I made him a best offer of £16 for some reason he declined it can't think why
  15. One further point, has anyone thought of importing a bitmap (.bmp) as opposed to a .jpeg as the quality is better and any one with windows can simply convert one to the other by opening the image in paint and then saving as .bmp I'm a Solid Edge ST6 user, mainly because its free, and find that this programmes preference for .bmp images is a good thing, giving me a good quality image to trace over if required. also printing drawings to .pdf using a "virtual printer" specifically Win2pdf (pro) allows me to send to most of the print shops in our area and know that I'll get what I want back
  16. Erfolg Just an issue or two here as an end user of designs produced by designers, draughtsmen etc, allbeit in wood which dictates less fine tolerances, the idea that a drawing is going to be full size is the alien concept, almost always the drawings are to scale, and a reliance on the dimensions and annotations on the drawing is forced on us,be it in a joiners/cabinet makers shop or out on site "this drawing should not be scaled" is inevitably written in one corner. And I find it difficult to believe that a patten maker producing a plug for a new engine block casting has a full size drawing, yes maybe if working on small parts, but almost certainly not on anything of any size Just my experience from within the work place Edited By Phil Winks on 04/03/2015 21:53:26
  17. Posted by Dylan Reynolds LaserCraft Services on 27/02/2015 23:20:37: would it be usefull if i wrote a lesson on how to draw a simple former with pics on here? using simple tools not so much for me Dylan but I think the answer is yes
  18. Posted by Stephen Jones on 25/02/2015 19:12:48: Posted by Erfolg on 25/02/2015 19:01:33: Does Total Cad save/export as DWG extension? The extension is important to me from the standpoint on getting prints run off at my local printers. As an aside I used to use Autosketch which was a Autodesk product at £20. Again a simple package a stripped down Autocad, now it cost an arm and a leg. Yes it does , along with DXF SKP and many more you can also export to PDF. Steve Being able to export to PDF is probably the best way to ensure your local print shop can print at the size you require as nearly all can deal with PDF and they tend to be smaller if you want to email them to your print shop as I do. Also it helps to include a print scale on the drawing as a reference for them too
  19. Posted by john stones 1 on 21/02/2015 18:24:12: It looks very good Phil, mines 260w/lb if you build em rough ..fly them quick John That'll be a tad more than BALLISTIC John way to quick for my ageing reactions, old pilots and bold pilots springs to mind lol
  20. Posted by Chris Barlow on 21/02/2015 17:54:41: As long as you're there mate, that's what matters. We need something to shoot at! We do that Chris Thanks for the kind comments lads, but honestly it really was not a massively careful build and the finish has surprised me too, I think its the coat of satin lacquer that's set it of, oh and the paper decals downloaded from T'internet, that for me was the only real stroke of genius Edited By Phil Winks on 21/02/2015 18:04:19
  21. Posted by john stones 1 on 21/02/2015 17:20:23: That's beautiful Phil He's after your trophy Chris John To go with the one I got for the tucano 2 yrs ago
  22. Here we go a busy Fri night/Saturday and she's ready for her maiden. the bty is a squeeze but the COG is spot on, thankfully. Now the techie bits, AUW 1.3lb Max current at WOT 180w = 130w/lb so she should have enough power, in fact she goes weightless at 1/2 throttle so under arm lob launches should be a breeze, Now just need some good weather to trim her out and make sure she's good for Greenacres.
