  6. Posted by Steve Houghton 1 on 30/01/2012 20:26:44: Take a look at this, not a glider but great, very clever video with a funny ending. Well worth watching. Unfortunately there isn't an embed code. http://www.flixxy.com/rc-plane-with-camera-flies-around-scenic-germany.htm @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css); @import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css); That's so cool, you can play a game, spot the pilot in each cut
  7. Do you have access to a slope or do you want to stick with flat field?   Do you want something fast, aerobatic, scale, indestructible, light, heavy?   Need to narrow your choices first, and decide on a budget   Tom @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  8. @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css); Flaps are very useful for slope racing, 'snap flap' is flap coupled with elevator (flap moves opposite direction to elevator) to get extra lift in the turns helps the 'grip' of the model, small ammounts of camber flap to get good height and lift in the launch phase before turning off to start the speed run, some aerofoils even benefit with a little reflex. Flaps can also be coupled to ailerons to improve roll response for even faster turns.   As mentioned, the easiest way to land is 'crow' breaking where the flaps are coupled with ailerons, ailerons go up flaps go down, this stops tip stalling for stability, extra lift so that the model can fly at lower speeds and drag to slow it down. Have fun experimenting if you get the chance to fly a slope.   Tom @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);Edited By Tom Foreman on 22/01/2012 09:34:23
  9.   New slope, christened The Turbilator as there is a lot of rotor making it hard to launch and land. But you can get a DS kick by exploiting the shear layer on the lip of the slope, makes for some very exciting flying. First time I've done front side DS!   Tom

  11. Hi Tony, the course runs along the edge of slope marked out by two posts or 'bases' 100m apart, at each base is a buzzer man.   The Pilot stands in the middle with the CD who tells the pilot when he can launch, you then have 30 secs to climb out and get as much height as possible, you also have to go off the course so that you can re-enter the course to start your timed run. The CD will count you down so that you can re-enter the course before the timer starts running, as you cross base 'A' the buzzer man presses the buzzer button as you pass the post, you then get buzzed at Base 'B' when you can make your return run, you have to fly 10 laps to score a time, quickest time wins the round with a 1000 pts, everybody else gets a percentage of these points based on how fast he flew divided by the fastest time. He or she who gets the most points for the day wins, we try and fly 6 or more rounds.   If you turn too early before the buzzer man buzzes then you have to 'cut' or go around again either doing an extra lap or just looping around again to get the base. The fastest pilots are very tight on the bases and rarely cut, they also maximize any lift they find and fly the shortest course to get the fastest time.   There's more info on Mike Shellim's site,   http://www.rc-soar.com/bmfa_league/index.html   Tom
  12. I totally understand Tony, even I get bored as a spectator, but it's a lot more fun as a competitor.   Once you've had a go its a LOT harder than it looks, flying a 3M span model 10ft off the edge of the slope at 50 mph (average speed) and flying the tightest course without overshooting the bases without cutting takes some serious skill.   Then thare is all the tinkering with the model setup adjusting ballast, CoG, differential and snap flap its a nightmare, but I love it.   Also factor in landing these things 7 or 8 times during the day in turbulent rotor without breaking an expensive airframe just adds to the stress.   One more word of warning, its a very expensive addiction that takes up all your free time.   Enjoy!   Tom
  13. Some video from yesterdays Northern Winter League at the Hole of Horcum Rd 3, conditions were 'Challenging' but I really enjoyed my flying a learned a little more about the Dark Arts of F3F racing       @import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  14. Well I managed to strip a flap servo in the Xenon, flew it but it sounded awful when landing under crow, so retired it for the day and flew the D60 instead. The wind built more and more all day and it was getting difficult to stand upright on the edge and keep warm so we decided to call it a day. The landings were also getting a bit 'interesting' as well!   Tom
  15. I hated MS movie maker, for many reasons, but not being able to use .mov natively (conversion took forever) was the main reason, it wouldn't do HD either without upgrading to a Windows 7 machine!   Pinnacle was very slow, crashed a lot and the results mediocre.   Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD 9.0, what a revelation! Well written code that runs at an acceptable speed with 720p HD video on a low spec lap top (Duo 1.6Ghz) easy to use time line and great results.   The cons, nothings perfect is it   Cannot get a default setting to switch off oversampling which results in an annoying ghost image on fast moving video, easy to do manually but you have to remember to do it every time. Annoying if you forget and you have just rendered, but I can live with it. Just select all the video time line, by right clicking and select all. Then right click again and select Switches - Disable Resample.   Took a few goes to select the correct output file, use the 'Sony AVC .mp4 1280x720-25-p' setting, or the 1080p version.   It has basic effects and titles, but I havn't explored them much. There are newer versions of Sony Vegas, but unless you want to spend lots of money and have a high spec machine I wouldn't bother. I paid £25 about a year ago for the online version (no disc).   Not only does this software work with great results, it is actually very quick to edit everything together once you have learned how to use it. You can then spend your time working on your project rather than getting frustrated by the software. Render time on my lowly laptop is 20 min for 5 mins of 720p Hd and about 300MB.   Tom
  16.   New slope in Yorkshire, good for F3F practise   Tom
  17. Hi Neil, yes if you want to go fast you need a super slippery glider with plenty of ballast and a big steep hill and lots of wind. Once you've mastered that you are then ready to enter the dark and mysterious world of dynamic soaring, current world record 468 mph, maybe they'll break 500mph this DS season, only time will tell!   Tom
