  1. Well I used MIG welding wire and in two years and countless cuts I only changed the wire once. If you know someone with a MIG welder just ask for 2 or 3 meters and try it with a battery charger  I used nylon rope to put tension on the cutting bow and never replaced the tension after cutting, as there is give in the rope for hot and cold wire
  2. as an update on the foam wing cutting jig I have made contact with the club member that gave a demo of his jig ( 20+ years ago) and he has kindly going to copy and send me the info. I will try to post the info when i have it.

  5. I have cut extreme tapers and deltas on my own by plotting the taper to a point and then tethering the end of a long bow to the pivot point, after the cut trim off the blank to the right size

  12. Ok the jig apeared in the radio modeler in the 80's can I get back copys of this publication can I ask this on the RCM&E site????
  13. Hi all back in the 80's I made a cutter bow using 1" by 1/2" timber from a diy store using two pieces for the cross member and one piece each end. with the end sandwiched between the two center cross pieces it made a very strong bow. Tension with nylon washing line. I also used MIG welding wire for the hot wire and a car battery charger for the power with a domestic light dimmer switch to control the heat. cheap as chips and it worked very well must have cut over thirty wings with no sign of it wearing out (there is nothing to wear out except the wire) but you must use good tight fitting bolts at the joints I have not got it now as i gave it away when we moved house. when I need another one I will knock another one up. there is a knack to cutting foam accurately but keep at it and you will get there. use ply well sanded and keep the wire on the move so you do not burn the template. have fun and be creative  regards  to all
  14. This plane is next on my building board just found a .25 at the back of the draw , brushed off 12 years of balsa dust looks ok i only ran the motor in one training plane then took it out and put in a old cooking .40 so it's in good nick, and I always oil my engines after use. nice b/w photo I wonder what the colour was in 1965 ? It must have been a light colour silver maybe. It will be some time before I get to it so hope to see other modelers planes on the thread and their colours regards to all  Peter
  15. yes it worked well once set up i could cut and sheet a wing in one evening using 1/16 balsa, glue on leading edge and trailing edge and leave it to dry over night quick sand and the jobs a "good un" not as satisfying as a built up wing but one heck of a lot quicker. I use foam from a DIY store and if it was not thick enough I laminated two blanks together and used the join line as the blank center. Now I have had my fussy out with built up wings I would like to get into the foam again if you would kindly send me an email with the article I would be grateful  [email protected] kind regards Peter
  16. back in the 80's there was a club member (TRENT R C M F C) that was making an attempt at the longest duration flight with a rc model plane it was a big floating thing i do not remember much about the plane BUT he used one of those new plastic milk bottles the was just coming in the supermarkets (well they were new then) he drilled the pipe holes just under size so the fuel tubes made there own seal. he went in through the top so he could change the size of tank in seconds. light and free and no soldering.  sorry about the waffle but it set the scene.
  17. Hi Christopher, that sounds about the right time. I also could not find resistance wire so tried mig welding wire and it worked a treat as i remember I only changed the wire once cheep as chips, I used a car battery charger with a dimming light switch to control the heat. If you do locate the peice would you let me know the issue so the i can obtain a copy from RCM&E. regards Peter
  18. I have always used 2" medical cotton bandage with white pva glue. especially useful  when taping a foam wing as there is no danger of dissolving the foam. I also go to 1/4 span then taper into the center 1" at a time cut away for servo after it has dryed. I believe that there is a small amount of controlled give with this method which spreads the load over a larger surface. I have never had a wing break except on a very severe and totaling crash and even then not at the join or tape.
  19. Hi All, I am looking for information about a foam wing cutting jig that I made in late 1980's or maybe early 90's It consisted of two 2" x 2" rails with 12" strips of contiplas screwed to the rails with a gap between to slot a plywood former into. as i remember there was a top ply former and a bottom former which you changed without taking the foam core off the jig. I think it was featured in RCME but i am not sure when or if it was in the mag. I probably could reinvent the jig from memory but would prefer to copy the original (it will save time and energy is there somone out there that remembers this jig or better still remember then if was in the mag so i can send for a photo copy.
  20. thank you all who looked at this thread I am now wondering if the jig was thought of by a Trent club member in Nottingham as i remember he did a demo at a club meeting however I still think that I remember a RCM&E artical with drawings and stuff. I will keep looking out for a while longer. regards to all Cpt Biggles
