  1. Well then Gents, this is what I receved from JR  Dear James,  Thank you very much for your e-mail to our Helicopter div. We, JR do not recommend Li-po battery to be used for our transmitter, since our transmitter is not designed for using Li-po battery.. Thank you very much. Best regards, Seky/JR Propo., Radio Div. i forwarded this to the BMFa nad asked for a pointed response regarding the insurance implication of using a lipo battery in the TX and this is what I received. Dear James Thank you for your Email in relation to the fitment of Lithium Polymer batteries to your transmitter.  The insurance provided to BMFA members is for “lawful recognised activity of the society” and relates to the equipment used as well as the actions of individuals; this is one of the reasons that we take such exception to illegally imported, non compliant RC equipment. The fitment of a completely different type of battery pack (by different I refer to voltage and other characteristics to differentiate from an aftermarket pack actually designed for the particular TX) would at the very least invalidate any CE marking on the TX and could easily alter the output characteristics due to the change in supplied voltage. This would very likely result in it being unlawful to operate the particular transmitter and would potentially give the insurers the opportunity to walk away from defending you from any claim made against you. Also the fact that you have a clear written statement from the importer telling you that they do not recommend the fitment of Li-poly batteries and that the specific TX is not designed for such fitment should guide your thoughts on this matter. I hope this is of assistance With kind regards Manny Williamson Development Officer I know what i'm going to do now ......
  2. Thanks for that John I've seen these on their website, it seems that they are the only supplier which for what seems to be such a good product and I can't find any with a JR plug. I must compliment my local model shop www.modelshopleeds.co.uk for the way they have dealt with my issue they were genuinely concerned by the problem and immediately refunded me (even though I had had the product for 9 months), I had previously contacted the manufacturer who provided a very disappointing response but hey ho you live and learn.
  3. Well I talked to the BMFA who commented that the use of lipos could be seen by the insurers as invalidating the CE of the TX and hence the chances of thenm paying out would be slim. I think we need some definitive answers from the manufacturers on this and I have written several letters to the MD's of Futuab, JR, Hitec, Multiplex etc asking pointed questions about using lipos, hopefully I will get a response. I will then write to the BMFA requesting an opinion from thier insurers on the matter. I'll keep you posted.
  4. Hi Richard, Apart from the historic T33 I've no experience on the new Kyosho jets, I'd give Scott a ring a BRC hobbies for some adivce he's a bit of an EDF guru and loves the unusual models.
  5. Yellow, can you post a picture of your 6904 install, did you use the wemo intake ring, should I start digging into the foam ? I've got exactly the same setup planned for mine, just beefdup the front retract assembly with ply for a grass takeoff, our strip is like a bowling green these days so should work, hopefully maiden next weekend.
  6. The slim pig that takes me back to my yoof on the slopes of Baildon Moor in a howling gale with Pengy (Paul Garnett) I was taming the pig when it stalled into a flat ish spin, faced with the dilema of 'if I move it will hit me' I stayed put and yes it hit me right between my legs ! Pengy almost lost his model rolling obout the floor laughing.  I ended up going to the doctor for a tetanus jab as the nose was full of lead and I didn't need any more in my dangly bits, the nurse fell about laughing when I told her the story. The model resurfaced the other week at our site and I towed it up 'high' for posterity, safe to say it beat the tug down ! Another one from saiplanes international the Axle, I loved my Axle, all moving wing it went like a rocket, the mechanism to control the wings wasn't very robust and the servo stalled on full lock which combined with a rock at Nant Sarah's didn't help matters, I'd love another one with today's technology I'm sure we could improve the mechanism
  7. Never flown the huck but i had 3 years from my mig, gotta love the rise off grass from the little bird, 4S with a LJ jet screamer had the WOW factor heavily attached until the 5 blade rotor detatched mid flight and kind of disintegrated the aileron control, alas my Mig is dead but wait on the horizon an a7 corsair ...
  8. That's sacrilege I'm planning on beefing up the wood (?) support and knit an elaborate kevlar nest to keep it all together ! At least that's the plan
  9. Cheers for the Timbo, I've had lots of good stuff from Dimension, their smartbec and picoswitch are fab, pity we do not have companies like this in blighty (or is it that I'm searching for the wrong thing) .......
  10. Hi To clarify my TX was bog standard straight from the JR factory no mods whatsoever. I had not read that you reccommended fitting a higher rated regulator before going down the Lipo route, I wonder how many people have done this ? The reason I said that more testing is required is that I was advised that other components are degraded by the consistently high voltage other that the regulator, I think transistors were mentioned, I am not electronically minded and can just about recall that a transistor is a switch !, I was advised that although no symptoms are immediately apparent the high voltage wears away the component which eventually fails. Hope this clarifies things for you Timbo, I'm feverishly repairing my Hawk, blizzard (which is going on a diet!) and gnereally using the no fly time as an opportunity to carry our some early winter maintenance !
  11.  I was using the one that came with the set, the syptoms were the most concerning .... Everything checked out pre-flight (range etc), take off ok then after a couple of minutes fail safe, apparently it was the regulator overheating. What I am told is that this does not occur straight away it is progressive degeneration of the components due to the CONSISTENTLY high voltage of the lipos, although Nimh's etc are initally the same they drop very quickly, something Lipo's don't Until a week ago I was a convert to the Lipo TX but now I'm scratching around for a use of my 1500mah TX. I'm not very happy and have written to the manufacturer of the Lipo with the details, I know it will lead to nothing but it helps. The only plus point I have is that it wasn't my Tug that went in ! Apparently if you want to check the status of your gear hold onto the tranny (its important you hold onto it for the current draw) and sit infront of the telly wagling the sticks with a couple of servos nearby, after a while it may get rather hot but miraculously doesn't with Nimh's Please don't flame this post with 'its all bo**ox mine are champ and I've used them for xx years etc etc' This happened to me luckily no one got hurt !
  12. Scott, Did you do anything with the dreadful nose leg assembly or are you posh and fly from Tarmac ?
  13. I agree with Scott on the Jet of the year but the instructions stuck big time, you need a little more info on the retracts and flaps 9if you want them), if your building one then take a look on rcgroups in the foamedf for the posts by Tim Wan there are some useful pictures I've gone for a 4S setup using the Het Fan and a 2W20 as it was laying around, I fancied the JS1400 but figured it would probably rip the nose leg off on our grass flying strip .....
  14. enter me please, i could do with some good luck this month.
  15. So am I it also looks like I'll miss the one summer weekend !, oh well I suppose I still have my PSS Vulcan and old Hitec set to play with if there's some wind ........
  16. My soiree into TX lipo has ended in disaster with my blizzard and flyfly hawk getting stoved in due to the high voltage of the Lipo degrading the voltage regulator and transistors in my 35Mhz JR PCM 9xII, I had used the flightpower 1500 TX lipo for about 8 months without problem until disaster struck a week ago. I'm going back to Nimh's until they upgrade their technology or there is more testing on the uprated switching regulator http://www.dimensionengineering.com/DE-SW033.htm
  17. Well after an hour of far*ing around with the MPX connector, heat gun, soldering iron and saw I managed to bend the connectors, re solder and shrink and it works, I can now move the CG as far back as I want. As the 4S pack is within 2 mm of the connector I decided to put a layer of tape under the connector to stop rubbing, all I need now is a good Friday night to test it out ..
  18. I'm using  very porky AXI 2820/12 (or 10) getting old I'm taking the plunge tonight with the MPX connector, I'll post the results if its a success ....
  19. We had a great night on Friday at www.nlmfc.org touch and go's with some 3d models and the new parkzone ember on the groundsmans van. We ended the evening with some great glider towing (good thermals). To be honest firday evenings have been the best flying time this monsoon season  On Saturday I ventured to Rufforth for the morning before the rain came down ..... and down ......
  20. Last friday (the only day we ever seem to be able to fly) I gave our tame hotliner pilot the blizzard to see what he thought, he liked it from the off but thought the recommended CG was too far forward, this leaves me with a dilema and to be honest the biggest bug bear with the kit... the mpx connector, the pins simply stick too far down to allow for a decent battery to fit, I know i'm using a 4s setup but if you read the forums so are a lot of people. I'm faced with 2 choices, shape lots of lead to replace the balls or undertake some precision soldering to allow the mpx connector to sit flush, the latter is preferable and I think that my only option is to hack the rear of the slot the MPX connector fits into and then bend the pins so they sit flat ...... Wish me luck .....
  21. I'd like a go with that, my pico-z had a terminal lipo fire in mid flight.. that foam really gives off some nasty coshh smells
