    Which Sim

I agree the Phoenix Sim is brilliant and certainly helps you keep you hand in when the weathers not great or when you've not flown for a few weeks to just get your eye back in...i like the way you can dial in cross wind gusts of varying strength, direction and regularity so you never know whats gonna be thrown at you on an approach. As for how much like th real thing it is...i'd say its as good as it gets.
  4. I've slept on the idea of a 3 pipe system and i think its the way to go. Now as far as the breather goes i read its a good idea to make a couple of coils in the line to prevent syphoning and stick them to the top of the tank before it exits in the engine bay in a neutral air area. Do they mean flat on the tank or upright. Any thoughts on that chaps?
  5. I decided to crack on with the fuel tank plumbing today. My initial thoughts are for a 2 pipe system and "T"-ing into the carb line for fill/drain(still not decided 100% on this idea yet...in fact the more i think about it the less i like the idea of back flushing the filter during filling!!). I've always used the solid pipe in the clunk pick up tube ever since a firm lading in a trainer flicked the pipe to the front...That caused some head scratching for a while...never again.
  6. Tygon fuel tube, Dubro petrol tank bung and felt filter along with my chosen throttle cable. Using this one to avoid the dreaded mtal to metal issues i read so much about. My intention is to have the ignition box in the engine bay for what i think are obvious reasons.
  7. And from the inside you can see it has a 3/4mm ply backing plate bonded to the inside of the fibreglass mould. There is a 30mm square engine mount to go on the outside so that should be ample strength i hope. Just checked the DHL Tracking number i have from the supplier and i should have the engine in the next day or so fingers crossed.
  8. So here is the bare fuz with only the cowl mount installed. The cowl and nose on the Zero is huge so fingers crossed not much cutting of the original form will be required, The engine dimensions suggest maybe a little around the spark plug but as the carb is rear mounted nothing for that.

  14. OK so i've now ordered the engine from one source, manual kill switches from another and the opto kill from Just Engines (you must have read my mind Steve). I have my fuel bung and Tygon fuel tubing and today i went out and on the advice of others i went to a  "garden machines" type shop and got my generic felt petrol filter for just over £3 so there was a couple of quid saved straight away. It is nicely weighted too which will be handy. I also asked if they had 1/8 bore petrol fuel tube and the guy said he did but the outer diameter is larger than the silicone tubing i showed him as a guide. He didn't have any to show me but i don't need any more just yet but will remember that for future ref. I've decided to get everything together before i start to build mainly as i don't have the engine in my hand yet i don't know where the throttle will cable will lie and everything else revolves around that really. Some photos would be useful about now to see what the "before build" and bits and pieces look like so thats my job for the morning.
  15. So i've finally made up my mind to put a CRRC 26R petrol engine in my CMP 120 size Japanese Zero. I've ordered new fuel bung, opto kill switch and tygon fuel line and heavy duty on/off switches (for ign+rx) and other than that i can't think of anything else unless somebody can tell me otherwise?. I'm still undecided about weather i should fit it onto anti vibration mounts. Maybe i'll wait and see how it feels on the test bench first. Its a fairly new version of the engine with the rear mounted carb so maybe i'll do a bit of a running report on here as so many people seem to be going over to petrol engines now and i know i found some but not all of the info i needed in a few weeks of internet searches. You can never have too much info i reckon. Would anyone be interested i wonder?.
  16. Hows the engine going Bruce, I'm on the verge of purchasing a 26cc and the CRRC looks the favourite but then there is the RCGF...i'm torn to be honest. Any thoughts before i splash out?
  17. Went for a day out to Stratford and on the way home i mentioned the show at Weston....I was told that i should have mentioned it before as i could have gone!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Now is it just me or would the answer to that question on Fathers day been different first thing in the morning or the day before.!! never mind, when is the next good one?.
  18. Good point Mark....i've got an old foot pump with guage in the garage i'll have to dig it out and see if i can't adapt it to the filler pipe on the plane's system.Cheers
  19. I'm sorry to disagree james40 but what's great about this country thats not from our history. Not a lot i suspect. We can't even string together a football team out of nearly 70million people. Football clubs in this country certainly don't shop for the best players on these shore's do they. We only have ourselves to blame.
  20. I'm just in the process of fitting an Air Up/Down retract system and will at some stage need to pump up the system....i was just wondering if anyone had ever made an electric air pump system using say a car tyre inflator as apposed to a standard hand pump?.
  21. I'm not a footy fan particularly but do enjoy watching England's finest overpaid idiots giving the country something else to be happy about, probably cheers them all up after watching that other brain disolving twoddle Eastenders, Its great to see all those little flags flying from the windows of the terraced houses in the towns and cluttering up the gutters and hedgerows everywhere else, the drunks having a good ol punch-up in the street after we've lost, the roads strewn with broken bottles and glass from the night before the numptys on the telly who all changed their names to Rooney by deed-poll. It must make the guys very proud who faught for these freedoms on the beaches of France. And if i hear 1966 mentioned again i'm emigrating.....oh thats right i am. English and no longer proud!
  22. I've just installed as set of the large Sky RC retracts in a model but as yet not put any real  pressure on them. All i can say is if you can try them on the bench first in case they are twisting when you fit them...i could see that potentially being a problem with mine so went to great lengths to make sure they were mounted nice and flat into the wing. I found just sucking on the up/down tube was enough to get them to work so i'm hoping 100-150psi of pressure will easily get them shifting. You could try just manually working them back and fwd a few times to just take the newness off them. I'd be interested to see how via a photo you fitted yours.
  23. As the strip we use is sometimes a little rough (and thats being kind thanks to the local badgers) i decided to go for strength. So i started by removing the flimsy bits of servo mount thickness ply wood  then reinforced the underside of the top surface with some 2mm ply, curved to suit, next i doubled the rib thickness in front of the main spar and added some more support to the surounding area. Then i found a little bit of oak i had kicking around and cut out 4 sections to fit in between ribs (2 per wing), i've shaped them to match the ribs and they've ended up about 15mm thick x 40mm x 40mm and bonded them to the ribs with epoxy. I then fitted the retracts in place and made any last minute adjustments to shape so the retract itself sat snug within them and then went over the whole modification in fuel-proofer. I'm hoping that will do the trick but i suppose the first landing thats anything less than perfect will give me a clue......i'll remove the retracts after the first few landing attempts to see how the whole thing is coping!! It hasn't really added much weight to the wing...not compared to the retracts anyway so fingers crossed.
  24. Having purchased my first warbird (CMPro Zero) and decided to fit air-retracts it has quickly become apparent that the wing area for the retract to sit in is going to need some degree of modification...ie a lot. I've got a few ideas that i think might suffice but i wondered if anyone has any photos or pointers before i get started that might be of use. My plan is to build up the ribs either side with some light ply reinforce the inside of the top wing surface and use a hard wood to mount the actual retract to. Am i going in the correct direction?
  25. I've just started fitting a set of SkyRC air retracts (the large mains set) and its dawned on me that it doesn't tell you in the instructions how much pressure to put in the air tank before use. Can anyone tell me what pressure would be normal for its 300ml air tank. Many Thanks
