My first ever EDF. Arrows Marlin from Leeds Model Shop. Powered by 4s 2700 batteries. A total of 8 screws completes the build.

I had to extend the slots on the battery tray to get the battery back  far enough for cg balance. I’ve also bought the wing servo  covers if I feel the need to hand launch and belly land with the UC removed.

Watch out for the Marlin Bounce.

Thanks for posting that Kev, I too have some of the paint and some little capsules to go with it which I assume must be the Covalent bonder (I bought a few tins off the Classifieds some time ago)?

Yes the little capsules are the bonder. Only a few drops required. The paint does need a really good mix as it is a very heavy pigment content.

Has the KFM3 maidened yet please, and if so, I'm intrigued to know how it performed?

I maidened it on the morning of the latest Wacky Races. It fly`s like my foam planky. Not a lot of difference to be honest.

I did however elect to use the Depron one for the races.

  4. Protocols.

The 4in1 system does the following Hitec protocols.

Click the link above for all available protocols.

    HITEC - 39

Models: OPTIMA, MINIMA and MICRO receivers.

    Extended limits supported

Option for this protocol corresponds to fine frequency tuning. This value is different for each Module and must be accurate otherwise the link will not be stable. Check the Frequency Tuning page to determine it.

    CH1 CH2 CH3 CH4 CH5 CH6 CH7 CH8 CH9
    CH1 CH2 CH3 CH4 CH5 CH6 CH7 CH8 CH9

    Sub_protocol OPT_FW - 0

    OPTIMA RXs

Full telemetry available on OpenTX 2.3.3+, still in progress for erskyTx. Lowest the TX_LQI value is best the quality link is, it's a good indicator of how well the module is tuned.

The TX must be close to the RX for the bind negotiation to complete successfully

    Sub_protocol OPT_HUB - 1

    OPTIMA RXs

Basic telemetry using FrSky Hub on er9x, erskyTX, OpenTX and any radio with FrSky telemetry support with RX voltage, VOLT2 voltage, TX_RSSI and TX_LQI. Lowest the TX_LQI value is best the quality link is, it's a good indicator of how well the module is tuned.

The TX must be close to the RX for the bind negotiation to complete successfully

    Sub_protocol MINIMA - 2

MINIMA, MICRO and RED receivers. Also used by ARES planes.

The KFm-2 wing is built to create a step in the top surface of the wing with the step at 50% chord and an airfoil shape formed on the top, front piece:

Now with the swept back LE of the HP I decided that I would form the step just behind the spar on the foam wing as I wanted to enclose the wing servos but I suggested to others to form it on the spar line and that works fine. So to construct the wing I used a full wing sheet of 6mm Depron and then glued another piece on top of that finishing at the line the spar, then stuck the spar on.

This is the extra bit of Depron to bury the servos

Then stuck on the bottom sheet

    End view showing the step

Not my finest covering job but I didn't want to spend too long on it as I wanted to prove (to myself) that I could build and finish it in under an hour!

    Things to note.

I didn't form a nice curved top airfoil shape to the front section as per pukka KFm-2.

Covering film to the top was done in 2 pieces, 1 piece from the TE to the step, 2nd piece from the LE down over the step.

Aileron hinge formed with Blenderm top and bottom.

Flight characteristics, seems to be more planted in normal flight, bank and yank turns are rock solid. Sinks a lot more on glide. Doesn't spin as well as traditional airfoil.

In short, it's a brilliant, quick to build option!

As an aside, @Kevin Fairgrieve is building another (balsa) Hanky and he is using the KFm-3 airfoil section which has 2 steps down on the top, so it will be interesting to see how that one goes.

    image.png.159c55f97d96374a99d002c2158e32b0.png

And like @Ron Grayhas done I have modified the KFm-3 to partially hide the servo`s. I guess my steps are at about 50% and 60@ of chord. In retrospect I should have gone with 75% as it would have completely swallowed the servo`s and looked nicer.

    We shall see.

I have "UNI" running on a few D8R's now with the version d8rii_rom080121.

Has there been any updates since that I should be considering please ?

I have read somewhere that "UNI" will autotune to the transmitter frequency. Is that true or have I misunderstood that?

If so and used with say a Multiprotocol Tx would this negate having to "fine tune" the Tx after binding ?

    Cheers

    John

The full list of the latest versions are here.

    FULL LIST.

I have to hand it to @Mike Blandfordhe has done a fantastic job on this.

  7. Not had so much fun in one day as I did today. I was a late arriver at 9am and arrived home at 5.30pm. A little crispy round the edges, but thoroughly satisfied with my day.

Maidend my Hanky Planky and took part in the Wacky Races. Did not score a single point, but it really was the taking part.

Pulled of a spectacular save with the Freewing Vulcan. I was being egged on to go "lower". Model kissed the deck, fortunately on the grass and I pulled off a save that I could never repeat. Flew the remaining circuit and made one of my better landings.

  8. My feeble attempt is ready.

Made from one of @Ron Gray kits and using the motor supplied along with a 3S 1350 LiPo she tips the scales at 514 grams.

For covering I used some "Wing Tape" that I purchased when HobbyKing were having there closing down sale in the UK warehouse.

On top of the tape I used document laminating film. Hinges are a mixture of film and Mylar. I have also reinforced the hinge lines with fibreglass tape.

Maiden as soon as the weather allows.

A beauty Queen she is not!
