Marc Humphries
Found a great presentation Albatross and Dynamic Soaring that explains everything you wanted to know about Dynamic Soaring but just couldn't be bothered to, well, find out. This always sparks debate when Andy Ellison updates us about the latest DS glider world record and usually results in total confusion. Enjoy! David perry 1
Thats a good article. Makes me ponder on the usefulness of his findings to other aspects of model gliding. Lots to think about. D
Myron Beaumont
Brilliant article .In my case I probably need to read it again to get the hang of some of the formulae in the latter sections .But one thing is obvious about DSR -& the figure 8 hover .If you substitute circumpolar for eg the great orme then you get a better understanding as to how it is possible to soar indefinately .NB -Overall downwind speed is 40% faster in the albatrosses scenario than the wind itself . Hasn't this been a bone of contention to do with ground (/ sea )speed on other threads regarding the visible effects of turning into or out of wind direction as observed from the ground based pilot & problems that ensue? Speedster
Flying DS with my Foka in very light wind, (under 4 knots) this shows the power that there is in dynamic soaring http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDzjGFXIpzc Real flight G 5 simulator, DS demo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3h-tOec_7U Dynamic soaring will change your life. Myron Beaumont
Soren Very impressive . You've got me thinking about making a glider again after a 55 year abscence .BUT I'd miss the sound of an engine

FunnyFlyer
Great academic (but not too much!) article about dynamic soaring. Here Looks like the record is now 498 mph, set on the 6th March 2012. Martyn Johnston
Can't get that 'Albatross...' link to work. I did post on another thread here that I recently watched a swallow doing EXACTLY the same Dynamic Soaring that we see model gliders doing. I can't find any reference to any other birds except albatrosses doing it. I guess that if you are not experienced/interested in both the model-glider flying world and the bird world then you wouldn’t have recognised what was happening. Dave Bran
Posted by Martyn Johnston on 01/06/2015 11:51:59: Can't get that 'Albatross...' link to work. Not many five year old links still work. I have seen lone Bees do DS riding the ferry generated "wind" to get between land masses in the Scilly Isles.
