Martyn Johnston
Hi Ray, Looks good, when you gonna fly her? I must put mine together and take some photos. Must weigh mine soon, she seems extremely heavy and I haven't finished putting the servos and radio stuff in yet. Ray Gibbins
Hi. I have been waiting and waiting all winter to fly my baby. I have been waiting for a north westerly so i can test fly it at Devils dyke. I have been there once this year with my whisper but it was way to windy for the baby. I can wait for the perfect conditions. It wont be long. Hopefully i will get some video footage. Ray.
Martyn Johnston
Ray, you any idea why there's a No: '8' on the rudder? Doesn't seem to fit with the other numbers.

Martyn Johnston
I recently bought a second-hand R617FS Futaba receiver. I haven't used it yet but have only just noticed that one of the two aerials is shorter than the other. The longer, shrouded parts are the same, but the smaller, thinner end-parts are different; one is about 30mm ( like all of the other R617FSs I've got), but the other is only about 15mm long. Questions; -Does it matter? -Should I cut the shroud back to make them both the same? -Can (and should) I buy a replacement aerial? Doesn't seem to fit with the other numbers. To be honest the answer to your question is no idea. I added the decals as per the picture on the box. It is meant to be based on a full size baby but i couldn't find any picture of the real one.
Martyn Johnston
Ray, Is there supposed to be a set of numbers on the underside of the wings?
Dave G
Hi Ray Fancy meeting here Various pictures of Grunau Baby at this site **LINK** Dave G
Martyn Johnston
Thanks for the link Dave. Only one of the Grunaus on the Airliners.net site seems to show any writing on the underside of the wings, and that one 'seems' to only have the number on the starboard wing. I ask because the kit has two sets of smaller letters (for the fuselage sides) and two sets of larger letters. I'm assuming the second set of large letters is for underneath, but there's no mention of them in the instruction sheet.

Martyn Johnston
Ray, did you feel the need to spray any sort of varnish over the lettering? Or does it stay stuck OK?
Ray Gibbins
I have covered the model with solar tex and put the lettering straight on top. They are very sticky letters. I have not flown the baby yet but I dont see the letters coming off. I didnt put any varnish on at all. Didnt want to add weight.
Martyn Johnston
Cockpit is nearly finished now. I'm please with it overall but I'm not too happy with the canopy. It looks like it's moulded from something a little bigger than the Grunau Baby.

Martyn Johnston
I thought I'd do a series on how I put the vinyl lettering on. This is NOT a class on how it should be done; remember this is only the second plane I've ever built; it's just the way I did it and it seemed to work OK. First cut out your letters NEATLY. If the background is transparent (as mine were) err on the outside of the letter, ie try not to cut in to the black. Then I spaced them out EXACTLY as they should appear. The grids on a cutting mat are good for this. Edited By Martyn Johnston on 20/03/2013 13:11:
Martyn Johnston
Then I layed a piece of masking tape all the way along the letters. This holds them in line for the next few operations.
Martyn Johnston
At this point you can partialy remove the backing from each letter, just to get it started (easier on the bench than once you've started on the plane itself).
Martyn Johnston
Then I layed the whole string of letters on the fuselage. (the masking tape hold them all lined up properly) Edited By Martyn Johnston on 20/03/2013 13:28:
Martyn Johnston
Now you can peel the backing paper of each letter. Then press it back down into position. Edited By Martyn Johnston on 20/03/2013 13:29:

Martyn Johnston
The straight-edged letters are easy. I did notice that the great big letter 'D' on the top of the wing has some wrinkles in it. Enough to annoy me, but nobody else will ever notice. Danny Fenton
Nice one Martyn, you can also use soapy water, which allows the individual letters to be slid around for a bit before squeeging out the excess water But your way works Cheers Danny
