Gazzalene
I am new to fixed wing coming from IC heli`s. I have got into the build side and just recently got my first "proper" kit .A Balsa USA 1/6th Pup.I have no idea on what the power and cell count should be.The kit box estimates 5 - 6.5 lbs and being new to building i will proberly be at the higher end. I do have some rather nice 5s cells at 5300mah i would like to make use of.And use a large size prop to keep things looking nice. Can any give me ideas on the motor/cell/prop ecs which woukld be ideal AND if the 5s packs could be used. Richard Wood
Hi Murphy, No more than 100W /lb will be needed for a Pup - which is 650W at max weight. A 5S is overkill TBH - a 4S 3700mAh - 4000mAh is more suitable. If you want to use a 5S the problem could be finding a motor with a low enough kV (rpm per volt) to swing a big enough prop without generating too much power. Most motors which fit the bill are likely to be on the heavy side. I have a Turnigy clone 4260-600 on a 5S & 12x6 prop which generates around 800W - too much for your Pup.This motor should be suitable on a 4S with a 13" prop however. a 4260-500 will turn more slowly & could be ok on a 5S with a 12". A 60A ESC is recommended & will have headroom to keep heat down. Treat yourself to a Wattmeter - they are essential in sorting these issues out. Other forum bods may have other ideas but I hope this helps. Good luck with your Pup.
Ben B
The other issue is what prop to go for- for a Pup I'd imagine lots of diameter and not much pitch- Pups are draggy and fairly slow.
Tim Hooper
Murphy, Firstly, welcome to the forum! Now further to Richard's comments, I've had my own experience to call on here. I have 3 scale biplanes - all in the 65", 7 - 8 lb ballpark. All three are powered by 4260 500Kv motors, 5S 4000Mah cell packs, turning 14x8 props. Power is more than adequate for some effortless scale aerobatics. Your big problem on the pup is liable to be getting the CG in the right location without having to add loads of ballast inside the cowl, so I'd recommend getting all the hardware as for forwards as possible. Incidentally, there's an ongoing thread of another modeller doing the same conversion here; **LINK** tim
