Where to fly : Godalming & Guildford

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

New to the forum having just got into the hobby three weeks ago after switched from cars tp planes. Have a HZ Super Cub and two Bixler Gliders.

Totally addicted (hence 3 planes in so many weeks!) but struggling to find local places to fly, tried a few local fields which have public footpaths through them but have been rapidly moved on by locals complaining of how noisey my Bixler is or because the farmer was sowing the fields (fair enough!)

Anyone local to me have any good spots they could suggest please? I spotted some gliders at Newlands Corner whilst running this weekend but it is a 30 min drive from where I live in Witley, so ideally wanted somewhere closer!

Cheers

Gav

Hi Gav,

I work in Godalming (though I am stuck working away from the office at the moment). I had a look for some where for a crafty lunch time fly but couldn't find any where suitable. So I like to hear if you do find some where.

Grey Beard, I don't know of a model shop in Godalming.

Ys no model shop in Godalming, might drop that guy a note to ask him if he knows of any good spots.

Rodborough Common is close to me and interestingly I found this online. Look at point 4 :-

I assume this is really old because I haven't seen the "air strip" and was on a bike ride that way at the weekend.

Either way seems the County Council are in support of flying (or were).

That's very interesting indeed. The BMFA club finder shows these chaps are relatively local.>>

They don't show Rodborough as a flying site but maybe they will know the history. Maybe you could email.>>

I'll take a trip over there next time I'm in the office.>>

You don't say if you have joined the BMFA. If you are going to fly in a public you should. Membership will provide insurance cover (providing you are flying with the landowner’s permission).

Great minds think alike!

I read the BMFA website for the first time yesterday, planning to sign up for myself and my son.

I also sent the Border model aircraft club an email yesterday day asking if I could join (after finding their club on the BMFA site).

Like you say they don't list Rodborough common as one of their flying sites but they do list Hankley Common which is very close to me just over near Thursley (10 mins down the A3 if you don't know it). So I suspect the Rodborough site is probably historical for them.

The club has paid the MOD for use of the Hankley site and they say it is available to use 7 days a week which is perfect (assuming their membership is not full).
