  1. I received a letter from Royal Mail this morning informing me that if I pay them £13.50 plus £32.65 Import Vat then they will deliver the system next Tuesday. I remain puzzled as to why goods from HK in China do not carry these penalty charges.
  2. Posted by David Davis on 25/10/2013 15:18:04: I'm still waiting for my plan. The delay is to give the rest of us a head start.
  3. Then is will have to be The Ride of the Valkyries; because I love the smell of dope in the mornings.
  4. Posted by Mark Reynolds on 25/10/2013 10:23:26: I need the sound of a siren as well. I'm pretty sure in a few years, all electric planes will have sound as the market gears up for it and the products become cheaper. I'm sure that you are right.
  5. Posted by Martin Harris on 25/10/2013 10:27:22: Greybeard, I've had various trials and tribulations with HK over the last year or so - eventually resolved satisfactorily and I had a great flight with the offending Hunter yesterday - but the several orders from the UK warehouse I've made have arrived consistently on the 3rd day - ordered one day (early morning or over a week-end) dispatched by end of play the next working day and delivered the day after). Your 12 day time seems about par for delivery from Hong Kong - many people have found that they have inadvertently ordered from there when they assumed they had selected the UK warehouse - did yours definitely come from Felixstowe? No idea, I ordered it on the UK site of that I am certain. As far as I'm concerned it's a M.M. operation of which I shall steer clear for all but the most non-urgent requirements that cannot be obtained anywhere else.
  6. I managed to place a small order on the UK site as a trial for materials in stock and delivery took 12 days after I received an email from them saying that my order had been dispatched.
  7. Actually it is the machine guns that I really need.

FedEx are much better because they deliver without delay and just provide an invoice, without a clearing fee, which can be paid on line. I suppose I should have told you that when I placed my order. Hi, we always use the postal system for deliveries (to over 45 countries, BTW), unless otherwise requested by the customer since it ALWAYS works out to be less expensive for the customer. If we had used a courier service such as FedEx or UPS , they charge MUCH more than Canada Post even taking into account the £10 brokerage fee that Royal Mail charge. Regards, David Thanks David, I'm sure that you are right, I shall just have to be patient and let the wheels of commerce grind even if it is exceedingly slowly.
  9. Posted by Model Sounds Inc. on 24/10/2013 13:40:47: Posted by Greybeard on 24/10/2013 07:54:50: I am awaiting delivery of my system (which it seems has been in UK customs for a week) and intend mounting downward firing speakers in the wing. I’m wondering if, since the covering will be doped nylon, should I install balsa sheeting over the top of the speakers to act as sound reflectors? By "downward" I assume you mean the speaker cone is facing outwards, i.e. down when the plane is in normal, level flight? Doped nylon is not going to let the sound out very well. And using balsa in speaker box construction is not good because it is too soft. A speaker box should be as rigid and sturdy as possible. Yes the speakers will be mounted in the wing pointing down. Whilst the wing is of traditional balsa construction which will be nylon covered and doped I will not dope the nylon over the speakers since these will be covered by a removable panel. From your comments it seems that I need to construct ply speaker boxes. 12. Posted by David Davis on 23/10/2013 13:43:49: I'm still waiting for the RCM&E Barnstormer Baby plan. It's been a week now. Only a week!
  13. I agree, an excellent idea.
  14. Posted by David Davis on 23/10/2013 05:26:15: Will people be collecting electric motors in fifty years' time? Of course; the copper will have a considerable value.
  15. One of the reassuring points to come out of this discussion is that no one has come forward to say that they have experienced uncontrolled restarts from shutdown speed controllers or receivers in failsafe, which gives me a little more confidence in them. So whilst it seems prudent to ask for an arming plug to be fitted to break the battery supply where possible we can also rely on the other means of preventing an unintentional restart as outlined in my opening post with a high degree of certainty that they will work as intended. Thank you all for your responses.
  16. I must be the odd one out as I am one of those changing over from i.c. nitro 4 strokes between 8 and 30cc to electric and I certainly intend going much larger.
  17. Andy, no silencer just the stub, it's a quiet motor. I owned one in about 1987 and I cannot remember it being noise tested but the club I flew at enforced the 82db limit so I imagine it must have passed that. If you do find that you need a silencer it won't have to be much of one.
  18. Posted by Andy Green on 22/10/2013 10:40:13: I'm in. Barnstormer 72. I have an original OS60 four stroke (open rockers). Just order the bits from DBS&S Does anyone have a parts list, I'll be going to Gaydon this weekend and I don't expect to have the plan by then to work out the bits myself. A A good choice of engine, I had one once in an 84" Powerhouse which it flew very well.
  19. Well put Kenking, I was taught that the best building material to use is fresh air and I still use as much of it as I can find.
  20. Hi Andy and welcome to this forum. It looks like the model that you have selected will be a good one on which to hone your building skills, it's not unlike the Barnstormer that several of us are building for next years meeting. You may be able to glean information for the electrification from our discussions on those.
  21. Whilst wing loading has traditionally been calculated with an empty fuel tank I wonder if this method is appropriate for battery powered models since the weight of these does not change as the battery is discharged.
  22. Posted by Phil Winks on 21/10/2013 17:39:38: Posted by David Davis on 21/10/2013 08:30:57: Would anybody be interested in wearing a tee shirt with "Barnstormer Boy" or "Barnstormer Boys" written on it at Greenacres? If so what colour should we choose? Orange so that we can find one another? If there's enough interest I'll get some prices. Hi David regarding T shirts for the Greenacres event I suggest we need to chat to David ashby, he organised last years from one of the forum members who does this for a living, (phil@elite workwear) I believe, at a great price too, and I suggest we have a generic design for the event with a slight change in the logo or additional printing to indicate the model. As for colours last year we had a choice of colours and so everyone was able to choose their own, as for finding each other at Greenacres, it won't be that difficult mate, especially if the weathers like last year we'll all be in the GAMFC tent lol Phil Edited By Phil Winks on 21/10/2013 17:41:19 Are you implying that i should use waterproof paint on mine?
  23. Overheating could indeed have this effect. I had a similar problem years ago when using castor oil fuel, the burned castor plated the liner and slowing down heat dissipation, at least that's what I was told by my engine man. A new liner and a fuel change saw off the problem.
