amperage test

Recommended Posts

Hi from a wet and windy Lincoln

I have 3 brushless ESC`s that have had their labels come adrift through the winter , they will all be 30-50A,and are all about the same size physically .

Is there any way of doing a test (simple for a simple guy ) to ascertain the amperage of each.

Thanks

Regards Bob

There's no test as such, but the cable gauge and size of heatsink should give a rough idea. If you know they are 30 to 50A capable, then why not consider them as 40A to start with. Benchrun a motor and prop combo, and using a wattmeter, prop for full throttle to give 40A, and keep checking how warm the ESC is getting. If its getting hot at around 30A or so, then consider that is its max.

It sounds a little crude, but I cant really see any other way, other than treat them all as 30A.

A, Treat them all as 30A.

B, As Tim says examine wire sizes to see if that gives a clue. Look really carefully to see if any witness marks identify which label came from which ESC. Strip off the sleeving and count the MOSFETS on each arm of the bridge, then look up the part number of the devices to try and work out which is which. This is easier if they are all the same make of course.

C, Run each ESC at 40A and the 30A ESC will reveal its presence by blowing up, this will probably happen before any overheating is detected by touching.devil
