Martin Thompson
Sorry for my ignorance , but what is a radial engine mount , and what are the advantages of using one?
simon barr
Hello Martin,A radial mount is one that bolts onto the back of an engine and this in turn is bolted onto the firewall, as opposed to a beam mount which has the two arms onto which you bolt the engine using its lugs on the side of the crank case
Martin Thompson
Thank you Simon. What are the advantages of using one of these.I remember being supplied with something like your description with a large Supre Tigre once , but I chose to machine a dedicated aluminium beam mount on that occasion , as the firewall was not big enuogh to fit the radial mount.I have heard suggested that if I were to put this engine in an aerobat , that I should put it on a radial mount("it" being a 25cc glow).Would there be a specific reason for this,ie does it distribute loads better or something? simon barr
To be honest I am not quite sure myself, but a lot of the larger engines are mounted radially. I should imagine as you say that the loads are spread better than mounting it on beams, but then why do they manufacture these large motors with lugs?No doubt there is someone out there with the answer

Martin Thompson
Thanks guys.I suppose its going to be the radial mount then for an aerobatic model , given I have the room. Its going to be a six footish Cap or Extra , and the ones that I have looked at in the flesh so far seem to have loads of room up front! Howard Tomlin
my saito 90 twin has a radial mount - it would be fairly difficult to beam mount a multi-cylinder engine ( except Vee's)
