Phil 9
My son has had a few toy rc cars and loves them but they easily break and are usually scrap after that. I would like to get something better with spares available He is only six so I don’t want anything too fast but maybe something that can be upgraded as he grows. I was thinking an rc crawler might be good. I will also need a Tx for it as I dont really want him using my aircraft Tx. Any recommendations? Chris Barlow
I run my local RC racing club so get to see quite a few different chassis! Are you using it on smooth tarmac or a bit rougher? A reasonably good rock crawler with spares available isn't cheap. My Axial Wraith is low to mid range and was still around £330 A good cheap car for roads, footpathe and car parks would be either a tamiya tl-01 (4wd), m-03 mini (2wd) or tt-01(4wd) with more upgrades for racing
Phil 9
It needs to be able to run on grass so will need some off road capability I have a budget of about £200 and it will need to be electric Edited By Phil 9 on 09/10/2014 19:04:
Chris Barlow
A good and almost indestructable car for grass and general bashing would be the Traxxas Rustler. My 10 year old has one and he abuses it something rotten but I've had to do very few repairs even after several years bashing from snow & sand, beaches & forest! I also have a Traxxas Bandit which is almost exactly the same as the Rustler but with a buggy bodyshell & buggy wheels. It has a 9turn brushless motor in which makes it insanely fast and the only breakage after 4 years is a collapsed wheel bearing!
Phil 9
the local shop has a traxxass 1/16 4x4 slash but it has a 27mhz transmitter and brushless motor any good?
Chris Barlow
1/16 is a bit small scale and will get stuck/grounded quite easily off road. Good fun on a tarmac race track though! Try to stick to 1/10th scale for off roading if you can. Or even better 1/8th but they get expensive!
Chris Barlow
The boys Bandit in the forest at Cannock Chase. Those aren't the wheels it comes with but a worthwhile upgrade! Edited By Chris Barlow 1 on 09/10/2014 19:33:

Phil 9
Chris Many thanks for your comments you have helped my alot. If it turns out to be a little too fast for my lad is there a simple way to restrict the speed untill he gets used to it.
stuey
How about a Tamiya Grasshopper? I had one in ye olden days. Sturdy, spares are available and it has a smaller motor that can be upgraded when you are ready. A package deal is around the ?130 mark. I raced 1/10 off road for many years, until I lost my mojo
Chris Barlow
Yes a cheap 2.4g radio can be had for about £30 and you will be able to adjust the top end point of the throttle to limit the power available (and raise it again when you have a go, which you will! This is the same as the one I use for my Bandit, Wraith and M-03 Mini **LINK** Edited By Chris Barlow 1 on 09/10/2014 19:53:

stuey
I still have a few cars, Associated B44, X factory X6 squared and Losi 8ight. I wish brushless and lipos were around in the late 90s onwards! Did a little bit of touring cars at WLRC too.
Chris Barlow
That's a good point too Phil and one I try to stress to people getting into cars. Generally messing about & bashing about on your own will lose its appeal and get boring after a short while! To ensure the longevity of you investment it's a good idea to start racing at a club or get some friends together for bashing sessions! Phil 9
will a 2WD still be ok off road or should I go for a 4x4 **LINK** the grasshoper does look interestin for the price
Chris Barlow
The Grasshopper/hornet were/are a lot of fun on clay/gravel and sand but do get stuck on true off road and long(ish) grass. They are also an old design and like the tamiya M-03 are limited to NiMh stick packs although some LiPo batteries have hard cases to fit, although usually quite tight!
