Bill_B
Boeing better have yet another re-think with their 787 Doomliner then. That uses a very large pack of Lithium-ion batteries to start the APU.
denis parkinson
Didn't they ground them not so long ago for that very reason?

avtur
The airlines make a clear distinction between carrying 'loose' batteries as cargo vs. batteries installed in equipment, which is why the ban is on carrying them as cargo. The concern is physical damage which can result from the way cargo is handled, the battery in a laptop, camera, ipod et al are not believed to be exposed to the same risk of poor handling. In recent years two 747 freighters have crashed as a result of onboard fires attributed to carrying batteries as cargo, four crew members killed but luckily no one on the ground.
