Andy Green
I'm thinking about getting a quadcopter, I have a budget of around £200-250 don't want a toy, looking for something a step up. So are there any that I should be looking at, and in particular which flight controller. I'm aware of the Naza & ArduPilot but what should I be looking for? I don't want way point flying, but would like a return to home in case I get into trouble. Andy
Biggles' Elder Brother - Moderator
The Naza V2 is good all round flight controller at a reasonable price. The KK2 is a lot cheaper but frankly is rather limited and the support tools are not good. The Naza is also very expandable - interfaces well with DJI's GPS system for example. It also has a range of solid failsafe features. The ardupilot system is excellent - but you really do have to be comfortable with some programming. Why not take a look at the Flamewheel F450 - good quality quad and you can buy it with all the necessary bits including the Naza as a package and its in your budget range. A good introduction to quads. We have 4 of the larger F550's and they have been excellent - and they have seen some hard service! But that might be a just a tad more than you want to spend - buts as I say its smaller brother the F450 is well within your reach. Andy Green
Thanks BEB Can't find a full turnkey kit, but no doubt the suppliers will be able to help, to match the FC with the hardware, or is it as simple as buying the frame and the FC just fits? As usual the more info you have the harder the desicion on where to spend your money. Andy
Biggles' Elder Brother - Moderator
Try Quadcopters Andy - they seem to have the full kit (airframe, power system, flight controller, undercarriage and GPS - just add an Rx) in stock at £275. Andy Green
Thanks BEB I have increased my budget a little bit, and have these 3 options. Does anyone have any comments about either option? DJI Naza F450 TBS Discovery Spider FPV with PixHawk flight controller Andy
Biggles' Elder Brother - Moderator
Well, they're all nice! And they all use basically the same airframe - the F450. The Discovery does seem to be a bit more expensive than the F450 - but I'm not really sure what for, except maybe some integrated wiring and a built in camera mount? It does look very cool though! The Spider is interesting, especially with the PixHawk - but that does push the price up a bit. Having used a PixHawk I'd say its main advantage is its much easier to get the "Mission Planner" waypoint software working with it, than it is to get DJI's "Ground Station" waypoint software working with the NAZAM. Both work fine, but Ground Station is more complex to set up. However, you said that waypoint flying wasn't of interest so may be that doesn't matter? I think you pays your money and takes your choice! BEB
