colin borthwick
Hi guys,I'm presently fitting out a sig rascal 110, with electric power. I have an axi 5330/24 motor with a jeti advance 90 opto speed controller installed. Power comes from two sharkpower 3700 5s batteries in series. This gives about 41 volts when fully charged. My problem/worry is that when I go to test run everything, I switch on transmitter, then radio power, then when i connect the power cable (positive) to the speed controller a fairly fat spark is given off at the point where the 4mm plugs first touch. Is this normal? The motor runs fine and all seems well, but that big noisy spark doesnt seem right. Can anyone advise? many thanks in advance.Colin B. David Ashby - Moderator
Hi Colin, I tend to see a little spark when I connect up the battery in a model. It was a bit disconcerting at first but seems normal now and I've been flying electric for a couple of years now without a hitch. Can't say why it happens though. Tim Mackey
My larger ESCs do it as well.... I think it is "normal" but the thing which bothers me about it is that the gold connectors are physically being damaged - literally by spark erosion! My 8s LiFes upon connecting to the 80A ESC give off a right 'ol crack!

Brian Parker
The circuit probably lacks a ‘soft start’ ie.. a thermister in series from the supply to Eric’s smoothing capacitor.
Tim Mackey
Yeh...might try that actually - cheers Eric.
colin borthwick
David, Eric, Timbo, Brian,Many thanks for your quick responses, I'm a lot happier about the situation now. It would seem to do eventual harm to the connectors, but other than that,no problem. David, once I've got this Rascal110 flying, I'll submit a review on it.
