Graeme Poke
I have made up a couple of cannon from 6mm dowel and balsa for my 1/6th scale YT Spitfire. I thought I would drill an 8mm hole in the leading edge and glue in a length of brass tube. Then insert and remove the cannon as I wish to avoid damage when carting. Would drilling holes in the leading edge cause a weakness in the wing such that it could fail? Any alternate suggestions please? ChrisB
That's what I do and it works fine.
Chris Freeman 3
I shape the balsa in a battery powered drill used as a lathe, the balsa has a dowel in the center that the drill chuck can grip. Once shaped the cannon is cut with the front portion having a nylon bolt inserted in the place of the dowel. The rear portion is tapped to take the nylon bolt and is then shaped to be glued onto the wing without cutting the leading edge. I hope the picture makes sense, the cannon is not fitted yet, just the part glued on the wing.
Graeme Poke
Thank you Chris and Chris. I made the cannon as suggested by you Chris, except I used a pedestal drill. They are ok. I will now experiment with both ideas. I hadn't thought of using a nylon bolt. Cheers Graeme
