Pilot painting

I am renovating an old pilot,it has a latex face that has gone brittle where the paint has been affected by the sun,

I have cast a new face to be bonded on and painted,

I have another to paint,one needs to be petrol proof and one nitro proof,

Any tips will be greatfuly received

I would use the Tamiya paints

paint the face a base colour then do a dark shade of the same colour as a water wash then dry brush a light shade over that. It gives a really good affect, then fuel proof with a clear top coat.

Stevo's link is good but shows 16 different tones just for the face. this is top notch painting but you can still get a good finish with just 3 tones a base colour a dark wash and highlights

but it all depends on how long you want to spend on the model and the type of finish you require. probably best to experiment on some test pieces and find a finish you are happy with before committing paint to your model

Oh absolutely Phil 9. Can't say I've ever used 16 tones before!! 3-4 would do a more thna adequate job. Fuel proofer? I've airbrushed Spectrum proofer over pilts with good results.
