Alastair Place
I'm sorry is this has been asked before but i have serched but i was unable to find an answer. I know you should only run 1 brushless motor per brushless ESC but i was wondering if it would be possible 2 per esc or even up to 4 motors per ESC as long as the ESC had a high enough rating to cover the amp draw of said motors. Foamie Dave
I'm afraid its only one motor per controller as the esc uses a back EMF pulse from the motor to calculate its relative position. Once it sees this pulse, it switches another output transistor (FET) to generate a magnetic feild in the next coil, moving the outer can (full of lots of little magnets) to its next stage. The esc then receives another pulse and the whole process starts again. Add another motor (or three) in the equation and its all gets rather confusing for the esc as it would be receiving multiple "pulses" Hope this helps EDIT this link might explain things a little better Brushless Motors , or Im shure Timbo or one of the other electrikery wiz kids will chip in if you need things in a little more depth
Alastair Place
Thanks For the reply I thought I had read somewhere that you might get away with 2 on one ESC but could not find the link again... But yep that was what I was kind of thinking I just need it confirmed, Al
Martin Harris - Moderator
I've read that it is possible to run 2 on one ESC but inadvisable as the start-up may be in random direction for the second motor.
Tim Mackey
yep, thats about the gist of it.
Alastair Place
Thanks for the info guys Looks like it's four new ESC for me then
Snorbitz
Would this problem be the same for brushed motors or is it a brushless issue only?
Tim Mackey
brushless only
