  1. Shape A is how the prototype model was fashioned.
  2. The wing stub has plenty of rigidity. Use medium hard stock. It won't affect the flight performance if you just round it or make it an aerofoil section.
  3. The original used a piece of preformed trailing edge stock. All the info is in the article and plan.. Don't you have the magazine to refer to?
  4. Hi, The stub axle is perpendicular to the wing bottom as seen on the control horn image. Carl feathered in his motor mount on the wing . I can see how it looks like it is mounted perpendicular to the wing top. The motor mount detail is shown on the plan. I hope that helps. Rgds, Shaun. (the designer)
  5. Hi Ian, Plasterboard is good but I use it on top of a sheet of 3/16" glass. This gives an extremely flat and true building surface. My workbench is an old Formica kitchen top and this supports the glass preventing it breaking.
  6. Hi Tony, Yes guilty as charged. Phil & I organise the Pandas annual single channel & retro event. Phil is the electronics wiz that has developed the single channel, reed, galloping ghost and propo electronics for updating old sets to 2.4G and I have my Retro Ramblings column in RCM&E. 7. Have a word with Leon at Bel Aire; he bought my scaled up Coquette with the OS Gemini 120 twin that featured in RCM&E and was going to draw it up and provide a laser cut short kit. Not sure how far he has got with it but worth a call.
  8. One thing you can be sure of is George (4-Max) tests every bit of kit he sells prior to offering it for sale  so if he says for example the motor will deliver 300w continuously and the esc is rated at 50 amps continuous then you can be confident it is.   Shaun. 9. Good one but Martin's wing doesn't have any servo extensions in atm just a piano wire pushrod.
  10. I've just finished the airframe for a Hawker Tomtit. Built from a pristine vintage Veron kit ( take note kit collectors, this is what the designer intended). The Hart is another one on my someday build list.   Another tip for the wires. You can hold the to the servo extension wire to the piano wire with heatshrink tubing  if the holes are on the tight side. Tape can unwind and get stuck sometimes Edited By 2.4g Shaun on 10/07/2020 17:52:30
  11. Hi Richard, I got distracted whilst posting and meant to add how to remove the Rx plug ends. Good advice for new modellers, well spotted, thanks. I've been at it 53 years now (aeromodelling that is), 18 years more than my marriage. 😆😆   Martin.. If the holes in the ribs are not wide enough you can use this trick. Get some brass or steel tube from B&Q about 1/4" dia X 1 mtr, sharpen one end then file teeth into it. You can then go in through the wingtip and carefully drill through the ribs buy twisting it by hand if you are retaining the covering. It's worked for me in the  past. Plug the hole in the tip, spot of paint and the jobs done. Re the  the wing servos, buy decent ones. Not sure of the span and AUW so you may need to go larger but I would use metal gear analogue and ball raced will last longer . Some of the cheap Chinese 9 - 15g servos have a surprisingly large current draw. I usually buy my servos from 4-Max, Inwood or Al's Hobbies (other shops are available 😆.   Shaun.     Edited By 2.4g Shaun on 10/07/2020 17:41:50
  12. Hi Martin, Chuck it away; it's 40 years old and you are obviously spending a reasonable amount money upgrading this to a 6s set up. 40 year old electrolytic capacitors don't age well and fail, plastics embrittle and can fail with worrying regularity. I have often seen this in our museum collection of retro radios that we endeavour to keep going when we give our talks to clubs. Also as mentioned, 4.8v (4 cell nicad)  was the design voltage for this servo 6v will kill it in short order and you don't need 6v for Spektrum gear; old wives and tales comes to mind. I was lucky enough to have one of the first DX7's in the UK and have struck with the brand since. I've had thousands of flights on a 4 cell NiMH pack with out any problems using suitable capacity cells that were capable of delivering the required current under load without pulling the pack voltage down. I would replace your servo with around one 13g sized servo on each aileron. It will mean making a small new hatch at each side but you should be able to pull the servo extension leads through the ribs with the piano wire pushrod. To make it easier, carefully remove the plug( Rx end) and tape the wires to the pushrod and pull from the hatch end then replace the plug. This will be a far superior and safer solution. Looking forward to some flying shots, great aircraft. Cheers, Shaun   Edited By 2.4g Shaun on 10/07/2020 14:46:44
  13. Posted by Dave Cunnington on 21/03/2020 08:32:14: I bet that was more than 50p ! Bought it in the late 1990's. Never appreciated it was an actual book at the time rather than an advert prop. Cover price was £9.99; I paid £5.00. Haven't read it yet. 😆
  14. I use this to check servo current. It's a simple in line unit.   https://hobbyking.com/en_us/hobbykingtm-compact-20a-watt-meter-and-servo-power-analyzer Update!  Oops. It appears to have been discontinued.     Edited By 2.4g Shaun on 17/11/2019 13:08:07
  15. In my mind this is an easy one, George at 4-Max. He's tested and produced real world data on over 800 set ups so you know exactly are what you are getting. Plus you'll be supporting a UK model shop. Shaun
  16. Here you go Pat http://inwoodmodels.com/epages/9f291c61-8fb5-420d-b8d5-43eb2920dd9f.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/9f291c61-8fb5-420d-b8d5-43eb2920dd9f/Products/NSD500 Inwood also sell sanding sealer and shrinking dope as well. I also found this the other day, not tried it but it looks fine from the description. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00AC22F1S/ref=s9_dcacsd_dcoop_bw_c_x_4_w   Shaun   Edited By 2.4g Shaun on 25/06/2018 10:45:02
  17. Hi James,   Perfect material for my retro model rebuilds. 21 built to over the last 2 years, more to come. just ordered 1ltr of dope and sanding sealer so very timely.   Shaun Edited By 2.4g Shaun on 25/06/2018 10:16:03
  18. I have a  Keil Kraft Firebird approx 40 years old and a  KK Talon around 35 years.. Nylon covered and still going strong. Tissue under nylon is an age old technique. I used it on my combat wings as a kid 45 years ago. Basically it does save dope as dope straight on nylon used to form blobs underneath and took more coats to seal the weave.   Edited By 2.4g Shaun on 27/03/2018 17:57:24
  19. Nothing is ever truly out of date but retro modellers enjoy flying RC models from the 60's to early 80's . Prior to that is generally considered Vintage. There is a large world wide movement for Retro Modelling especially converting early radio gear to 2.4g and flying it instead of having it stuck on a shelf. Single Channel, Galloping Ghost, Pulse Proportional and Reed transmitters with Arduino based encoders (and re-coders for the Galloping Ghost and Pulse)  with 2.4g RF modules are being reproduced by modellers. It is a new skill set learning to fly using these control methods and very rewarding. There are many hundreds of these sets in use world wide now. The same applies to classic proportional radios being converted with new encoders and RF modules. I have a Futaba M6 with 20 memories an early OS  5 channel propo transmitter.   Paul Bardoe and his retro aerobatic events are well established and supported with a healthy following JR have produced a superb retro radio so they obviously saw a commercial opportunity here.  We are no longer a minority group.     Shaun     Edited By 2.4g Shaun on 17/02/2018 13:02:42
  20. Hi all, There's a new Retro modelling website / forum just launched that compliments the info available on here. Worth a look www.mode-zero.uk Cheers Shaun
  21. Still being organised but as long as there are no problems, we should have details soon.. There will be free flight, cl, retro aerobatics, single channel, retro and vintage slots... Cheers Shaun. PS I'll call you next week...
  22. And for even more info on the rapidly growing single channel scene have a look here:- www.singlechannellersreunited.co.uk. Two big retro events where you will see restored original and 2.4g converted, single channel, reeds , galloping ghost and early propo sets are the well established PANDAS club ,Pontefract Retro and Single channel fly in on the 17th June (there is additionally a general electric fly in on the 16th) and the retro Nats at the BMFA Buckminster HQ on the 6th, 7th and 8th July Don't miss out on these unique and ever growing events. The Pontefract do has attracted modellers from a far a field as Australia and Sweden in the past and often attended by Andrew Boddington and Alex Whittaker.   Heres a video I made a few years ago that shows a cascaded  escapement set up in operation - 6 functions from a single channel.   www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5mRQcVeu-4   Can't seem to embed the link so just cut and past it your browser.. Shaun   PS. Don't forget the many great classic designs from the 60's and 70's that RCM&E have covered as free plans over the last couple of years.. They all fly well. I know - they were all flown and mostly built by me.    Edited By 2.4g Shaun on 03/02/2018 16:34:52
