  1. Hey Guys, I made up a makeshift testbed to try out a 37 year old PAW that last ran in about 1975/6. I cut a notch out of a piece of 3/8 ply, bolted her in and g-clamped the board to a small stool on my balcony! I had run most of the tank through before thinking to set up the video. Here's the result... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfX6nXP_yHU   Call me odd, but I still love diesels!   sparks
  2. It's great to see that you have got started and now progressing the 2X build Bruce! sparks
  3. Hi Alan,   Good to hear that you are building a Popsie, and lots of other things by the sound of it! Keep going, it will keep you young and you can relive those youthful moments!   As you may have noticed, I didn't buy the replikit balsa pack as I didn't know it existed until after I bought and started cutting balsa. But I'm sure it is good and a great way to get the build progressed and also get it done well.   For the power train, I used the Hacker style outrunner from Hobby King, http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=4701   with an 18 or 25A ESC..I can't recall but will check later. 18 is probably enough but I think 25 may have been what I had available.   You could probably use any of those fairly cheap little outrunners that take up to 15A current on 3s in the Popsie. I'm sure it would do alright with something like an 8 x 6 on 2s too, but I havent tried it.   To be honest, the brushed motors I have had would also do the job, maybe with a gearbox, but I think that they are far too heavy for the output compared to the equivalent brushless outrunners.   I use a couple of different lipo packs, both 3s, one is a turnigy 1000mAH, the other is a Rhino 1250mAh. I usually run an 8 x 3.8 prop and sometimes an 8 x 4, the latter produces even more go, but I prefer the finer pitch prop to be honest. Both provide enough beans to fly well on just over half throttle and give over 10 minute flights with ease.   If you check out the RC groups forum, you will find a couple of other build logs for Popsie and also 'Aesop', which was posted by the Replikit designer, Vintage1. Both will give you lots of tips for the build if you feel you need more.   Otherwise, post on here and i'll help if I can.   happy landings   sparks
  4. I think NiMH batteries cell life is around 500 cycles, but this is probably with ideal lab conditions of load / discharge and charging. they should hold 1.2v on a fairly flat discharge for the greater part of their discharge period, if maintained within their load limits. Over long trickle and regular charging periods can seriously affect longevity I think. Just some things to think about with these cell packs.cheers sparks
  5. Posted by Grahamd on 28/09/2010 13:17:15: Simplest way ?   nip into a haberdaheries (or hobbycraft) and get a dress makers pin wheel (used for marking out patterns onto material. Put wood under plan and trace using wheel (makes small pin holes in plan and wood, but is 100% easy and accurate).  I like that idea! Must try it! Cheers Grahamd sparks
  6. Here's a couple of pictures of the airworthy almost finished Stick. Since these were taken, I have shortened the fuse by another 3/4" and added some more block balsa to the cowl. sparks
  7. Not including the 75 -85 kg of pilot presumably   and is that dry or wet weight?   back to the slide rule Marc   sparks
  8. So, Stick Thing is ...sort of flightworthy... here's the proof. Still needs some finishing on the fuse, but i'll do that when I have finished adjusting the position of the tail group and wing. Well, the tail end is all glued in place now. So I dont really have an excuse.. anyway, here it is, in the glorious desert dune environs of the Empty Quarter.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfYspzbO_lI&feature=mfu_channel
  9. Tried the 'swept' runway last weekend. Worked a treat for the Popsie taildragger, but the tricycle Debutante was having none of it!...the wind was about right though, so at least I got that part right. sparks

    Smoke

Tapping the pressure from a two stroke crankcase is going to reduce the performance of the engine a tad when all of the fuel mixture goes to pressurise the smoke system instead of through the transfer ports to the combustion chamber....   sparks
  11. Nice video, great song...the prop wasn't running all of the time though ...can't really see the point of driving in circles around a field, but I guess it adds a bit of something different. A little too much down on the elevons whilst 2 metres in front of the car would have ended in a bag of trash though.... sparks
  12. Posted by Djay on 13/09/2010 11:08:56: Come to Al Lisali  in Dubai and fly with us on Friday morning. Take you just over an hour if you go on the 77, which takes you straight to the flying site. Last time I went on the 77 their were no speed cameras either.   And as the weather is starting to cool down a bit, you can stay all day and fly from our 250 metre runway.   Darryl  Cheers Darryl, I will take you up on this one when the weather gets a bit cooler. As it is I have to be up earlier than i'd like to be able to fly from Mussafah before it gets to hot and too windy. Roll on winter! sparks

Posted by REX LEAVESLEY on 12/09/2010 19:59:17:  Try watching the  motorbikes, specially   World Superbikes,  and  British Superbikes.  Well said Rex. Bikes and bike racing are simply better to watch live or on TV sparks
  14. I like the resonant 'howling' sound actually. Probably not the best for the longevity of your airframe though. sparks
  15. FWIW, I have bought Turningy and Rhino Lipos from HK and, touching wood, haven't had a problem with either yet.   I can't buy from my LHS as the only one in Abu Dhabi that I have found has yet to progress much in the world of electric flight. It's yet to catch on here, well unless you count cheap Chinese made helicopters with nimh packs and small washing machine motors.   So mail order is the only way, if I have a problem with HK, then maybe i'll look into using an alternative MO supplier.    sparks
  16. Great stuff Ton, thanks for sharing.sparks
  17. Hard to say without knowing which you bought. But all the ones I have are reasonably quiet when fitted with a balanced prop.sparks
  18. It's surprising how much weight can be saved if one doesnt have to build the airframe and power train to accomodate around 80kg + of human body!
  19. So, are your extension leads are universal? ie, without the tab to protect from reversal....all will be revealed later I hope!
  20. Wot 4 foam - e mk2 maybe?
  21. I know exactly what you mean, I have had a few 'Collector's Edition's' myself :-D
  22. I like the look of this one too. I'm probably with Nigel on the 'leckkie' conversion though sparks
