Posted by Gaz Elliott on 02/08/2010 22:12:21: Hi all, eventually got the set up for the twin star. Now the dilema is do i place the esc in the nacelles to allow cooling or does it go in the fus. mixed bag so far in my findings so wil it really matter??? As always many thanks. Gaz Hi Gaz, It may depend on the rating of your esc and how hard, or near the limit you are going to drive it, if you're pushing it, then you want all the cooling you can get so i'd try to get some air flow around, if you have lots of spare capacity and aren't going to push it, then it's probably ok in the fuse. sparks

Greetings also from Abu Dhabi, For a weather report, please refer to Djay Darryl's comments above. I've recently finished a Vic Smeed Popsie, and on the table now is a 48' span ARF Super Decathlon. Easy assembly only made more difficult if one tries to follow the laughable Chinglish 'destructions'. That aside, the kit quality looks to be reasonble, though I doubt that the front end will be able to take a bludgeoning, the ply formers don't seem to have much wood left around the 'lightning' holes. sparks

Get your votes cast then Andy. Heard a lot of good things about the big fish too. sparks -
Agreed, getting a little cross threaded...

Sounds like a good plan Terry. I'll have to look out for something similar for the little parkflyers. cheers sparks

A bit close?

The well timed step back was just enough! nice video quality Simon, what camera system are you using? sparks -
A friend of mine was flying the full size Harvard at Rufforth LMA last year, I don't know if he made it to Cosford or not. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-Q7AzTVT88 Nice to see and hear a real one. sparks

Posted by Gemma Jane on 25/07/2010 12:20:57: Gonna have to get me one of these Stephen, thanks for sharing. Ditto the bench, I always spend half a day tidying up before starting a model... it doesn't last long into the build though! I had exactly the same problem will belly landing at first, it's how I lost my PZ Mustang after being use to a U/C on the HZ Cub. It comes though with practice as you have found. I think the mind is saying it's gonna hurt so we slow it down too much and then it stalls and does hurt! I'm now wondering if I could land a model with a U/C as my preference for the last couple of years has been belly landings once I got the hang of it. I'll admit that it doesn't happen very often (well not as often as i'd like), especially on sand, but there is something very satisfying when I get the landing just right and she comes in on the wheels, tail up for a yard or so, then gently rolling to a stop. Maybe its just chance, but I'm going to take the credit anyway! sparks

I happen to like bumble bees, that's why I built Vic Smeed's Popsie! sparks

Posted by Augusto Pinto on 26/07/2010 13:33:56: Hi Stephen, Yes mate, I still have a few others to restore too and I could have much more buts thats another story! .... By a matter of space my wife asked me to move the models to my parents house, after my Mam's dead the house became dispeopled and in 15 days was assaulted for three times! As they had nothing to steal they made a mess all over the house and broke a few models and stole my DB Hurricane (that one with foam wings) the BT P51 and a Bates Dauntless, fwe petrol engines and my Futaba 9Ch! As we can see it was too much and at that time (three years ago) I thought to stop with the hobby. Cheers, Augusto PS: Central Police door stays 50 m far from my parents door! It makes my blood boil when I hear about thieving scum breaking into peoples houses and stealing things! Anyway, you have moved on and are back in the groove so, onward and upward with the refurbishment work!sparks

Sorry Mike, can't answer, but i'm sure Spectrum will provide some spec data on the AR500. I use cheapie HK TX/Rx made in China, and they are good for as far away as i'd want to fly a 37 inch parkflyer, (over 500metres). sparks

I'd steer clear of heli's to start with Bazzer. Take Martin's advice and find a club, or at least someone else who has had some experience in your area. He or she should be able to set you on the right path. If you want to go it alone, search in here or the magazine(s) and trainer get yourself a high wing electric powered trainer plane, rudder, engine and elevator with a dihedral wing is a good start. Don't try flying in anything but calm conditions when you are starting out, its too easy to lose out in the wind when you are inexperienced. Buy or download a flight sim (FMS is not great but it's free) and will work with a PS2 type controller with a usb plug, and get some flight sim time in. Crashing those costs nothing. sparks

Ok guys,I must have been bored I guess. chocks away Ginger! my excuse for frivolity.....I need to reduce the size of my scrap balsa bag, but I can't just throw it in the 'bin can I ?.and yes, I know the instruments are the size of the pilots head! sparks Edited By sparks59 on 26/07/2010 20:06:55

Posted by Chris Bott on 26/07/2010 16:24:59: 2 things:- ... When I set up my models, I keep changing side and down thrust until the model does what I want. i.e. flies straight and true whatever the throttle setting. What i don't do is worry about the "why" I couldn't agree more Chris, whilst it is interesting to debate these things, and maybe learn something or get a few conflicting views, the bottom line is, use your experience, or get advice from others and do what needs to be done to get it flying how you want it to fly. Sorry Gemma, haven't yet had chance to research any better video of the helix effect, single or double, i do like the party popper experiment though. Just set something up and see what you get, a man after my own heart! sparks

Hey Stephen, I bet your club instructor is looking forward to the maiden of the big Lanc!!!!! A long time ago, when first seeing a model Lancaster bomber, built and flown by a friend of my mentor, I promised myself that I would build one myself, one day!! Got to try a twin first though, Mossie or Beaufighter. (sorry to blag your thread LS!) sparks

I am not saying that the experts are wrong, but nobody provides any measurements of this force on the fin under varying circumstances, such as what angles and pressures are involved, nor discusses the effect that centrifugial force would have as this 'cylinder of air' whirls about. Does it resemble a truncated cone as it travels rearwards? What is its effect on the wing? . Ok Gemma, over to you for some good wind tunnel footage ...... sparks

Hey Taff, I would try a charge then give them a static ground load to see how they respond. Keep them out of your plane as a precaution. Unfortunately, 'puffed is usuallyduffed' though. sparks

.."In that time he has purchased everything else needed. He is putting OS 52"s in his.The only problem he has is he gets to nervous to fly. My instructor flies all his models for him.." I wouldn't want to build something that would cause me too much worry to fly it myself. Anyway, here in the desert I have to do it myself anyway. That is one of the reasons why I am holding back from building anything to fast, or complicated or expensive at the moment...nothing at all to do with being a tight Yorkshireman honest! sparks

Hey guys, Just looking at the photo's, the Lancer reminds me of another great plane of around the same era (or that style anyway) the Daddy-O,.. .'...derived from Thayer Syme's RC version of the McGuire Daddy-O and re-engineered by Stevens AeroModel' I love the lines of both! sparks

Posted by Big Bandit on 26/07/2010 02:38:04: Hi Sparks, Belair are looking to do the formers and ribs for less than half that price, all of the rest is at hand as it were. Cheers, Chris. Actually the ribs aren't too bad as they are almost all the same, but I guess having the formers cut is well worth the spend! sparks
