  1. Dai I have a brand new Enya SS15BB I can sell you. I bought it from Webb Models as a replacement for a OS15LA which had a problem. A friend fixed the OS for me so I now don't need the Enya. I have run perhaps 4 tanks of fuel through the engine so it is not fully run in. I will sell it to a good home for 40 Pounds which includes postage unless you want to come and pick it up in the south of France! If you are interested send me a PM and I will send you photos of the engine.
  2. Sparky Plan from My Hobby Store. Here is something not mentioned and may be of interest, it is a real blast from the past and was published in Aeromodeller September 1951 I have attached a link to the outerzone site where you can see the plan. If you scroll down there is an interesting 2 page article on the plane written by the designer a certain Mr Hundleby. It shows pictures of the plane flying in the West Essex Gala and the 1951 Ripmax at Cranfield. Also there is a picture of the plane flying in winter when fitted with skis. The folks at that time were made of the "right stuff" as he talks about flying the plane in 40 mph winds and doing vertical dives. The plane was designed to fly "stunts" and was made strong enough to survive hard landings due to what he called "pilot trouble" aka pilot error. All this on a single channel radio with a elastic escapement and state of the art X.F.G.I ECC receiver, whatever that was. The plane was powered by a 1.5 cc Albon Javelin and has a 48 inch wing span. The plan on the outzone site has an error as it says the wing span is 40 inches. I ordered a plan from My Hobby Store which has the correct specified wing span, and am on the process of building the plane. As the plane is called Sparky I intend to use an electric motor with rudder and elevator control. http://www.outerzone.co.uk/plan_files_02/2914/Sparky_done.pdf I hope the link works if not perhaps Pete can sort it out Barry
  3. The main airshow or "meeting" at the La Ferte Alais is each year over Whit weekend (Pentecote in French) It is a very well known air show and takes place over two days. It is the one to see if you are interested in historic aircraft. Barry
  4. Robin, Here are three photos of my Rara Avis I used an electric motor which draws about 750 Watts from a 4S3300 mah battery. As you can see I replaced the wire undercarraige with a carbon fiber one and fitted the wings with two 5mm nylon bolts instead of the elastic bands. By moving the firewall foward there was enough room to make a hatch to install the battery without removing the wings.     Edited By Barry W on 20/05/2014 14:18:50 Edited By Barry W on 20/05/2014 14:21:30

  8. I built a Rara Avis about 2 years ago following a recommendation from a friend who said it flew better than the Wot 4. I however converted it to electric and made a cowl for the motor. To get the balance right I moved the motor foward an inch or so. It certainly flys well and is limited by my model flying capability. I can try and put a photo on here if you are interested. Barry
  9. Thanks Terry. I am far too old to drive that far so plan to come via other means. Barry
  10. I am interested in coming for a day or two.It would be nice if we could all meet up. Perhaps Pete or Terry could be the point of contact. Barry
  11. I agree with avtur the system could be run using a smartphone and SIM card for the Internet access. The wunderweather station solution is fully integrated. All the software to run the weather station is on the controller board. Hence there is no need for the controller board to be hooked up permanently to a PC once it has been configured. Also there is no need for some separate 3rd party software. The controller board is about the size of a credit card and runs off less than 2 watts of power from a 5 volt supply. The system could if required be run off a battery with a solar panel charger. I am running my system off an IPAD/Smart phone 240 volt wall charger .
  12. I live in the south of France and am into RC flying as a hobby although not in a big way as I only have 6 airplanes and gliders. One of the things I find a bit frustrating is driving the 7 miles or so to the field and finding the wind conditions too strong as we fly from a flat site. I have often though it would be a good idea if the club had a weather station close to the field so that one could log on to the internet and find the conditions before leaving home. A few weeks ago on another aviation forum someone in the US posted an article about a DIY weather station and the components he sells to make a suitable aviation weather station. I have attached below a link to his site. Basically from the component he sells you can build a weather station that displays wind speed and direction plus temperature dew point, pressure etc. The system has a built in WIFI transmitter which connects directly to the Internet via a WIFI router. It is possible to set up for free a site on wuunderground a US weather site which interrogates your station and displays the information on their web site. The cost of the parts to build a system are in the region of $390 of about 250 pounds delivered to the UK. I have built a system recently and it seems to work very well and I have attached the link to my wunderground site below. Obviously the site needs to be installed in a secure location either at a members home near the field or if there is a hotel or pub near by that has an Internet connection. I thought this idea may be of interest and would like to point out I have no financial or other connection to the person selling the kit of parts. http://wunderweatherstation.wordpress.com/ http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstation/WXDailyHistory.asp?ID=IPROVENC91           Edited By Barry W on 05/02/2014 11:02:05

    OS Max 15LA

Thanks for all your suggestions. The problem started after several hours running the engine so I am not sure what has changed. I had bought a new back plate and the leak persisted. There is no gasket between the back plate and the crank case. In fact the wall of the crankcase is so thin it would be difficlt to make a gasket that thin considering the vibration and fuel that woulddamage the gasket. I will try some silicon gasket paste and see if that fixes the problem. Again many thanks to all who replied to my post. Barry

    OS Max 15LA

I have a problem with my OSMax 15LA engine. When running the engine at full throtle there is a fuel leak between the black fiber back plate and the crank case. I have replace the back plate and tightned the four fixing screws but there is still the fuel leak at high power. Has anyone had this problem and if so were they able to fix if? Barry

  17. I was just last weekend talking about hthis to someone I met at the LAA Sywell fly in. My son is now thinking about perhaps trying for a Commercial pilot and ATP licence. The person I talked to had 25 years RAF flying then 5 years with an airline before he gave it up due to family constraints etc. He remarked how automated and boring the job had become. However his first advice is before spending any money on courses etc first go and see if you can get a First Class medical as without this you are wasting your time. Also there is a presentation soon in London on job oportunities in aviation. Here is the link **LINK**
  18. Hi Beb no problem mate I did at the time think it may be a little over the edge. Perhaps you can email the link on to Timbo as the Welshies like a bit of a sing song!
  19. This is dedicated to all those who have flown on Ryanair.     Very sorry Barry - yes it was funny, but I'm afraid it drives a "horse and cart" through the Language Rules on the forum - see here! I had no choice, it had to go!   BEBEdited By Biggles' Elder Brother - Moderator on 08/04/2011 11:30:26
  20. Hi Tim No sweat, it is all part of the fun and learning process. At least you encouraged me to buy a wattmeter. If Bob or anyone else has a go at electrifying a SS60 I am interested in learning how it works out. One thing I like about these kits is once you have the plans it is easy to build a new fuselage or wings with some balsa from ones LMS.
  21. The motor was a BL 326/05 had a 12 by 6 prop fitted if I remember correctly. The watt meter showed over 700 wats at full power. The SS60 was not lacking in power as it would climb out at a steep angle. The total weight of the motor esc and battery was 730 grams. I think there were several issues, as well as the added weight. I had mounted the aileron servo in the wing cetre section and there was too much play in the system. I changed it out to two seperate mini servos in each wing which did improve matters. All this together with the fact that I was getting back into RC flying after about a 20 year lay off didn't help. Probably if the model hadn't crash when it did I may have been able to sort out the flying characteristics. Anyway it is all part of the learning experience and nobody was on board.
  22. Barrie This is my second GL glider. The first one had the original system of front and aft dowels to hole the elastic bands. Last year the two bands holding the wings on broke and the fuselage was shattered in a field of Cote de Provence vines. Hence this second version has the standard method of attaching the wing bands. Now I use six elastic bands!. I do agree however that the original system may be better for beginers doing heavy landings. Fortunatly I am just about getting past that stage! Last week the weather was quite good and I managed six 30 minute flights in very weak thermals.   Tom Wow how did your friend manage to keep track of his GL at such a height. Obviously flying in cloud the glider must have been sucked up in a thermal. How did you friend ever manage to control the plane in IMC and make a safe landing?
