  1.  Actually looks a bit like my zipper ! (slope plank)
  2.  Hi all, I wasn't sure where to put this, but I just wanted to publicly thank the judges for choosing my picture as the winner in the 2010 photo comp.  I received my subscription notification today, and am most definitely looking forward to the magazine!   Once again, thank you  Regards   Paul     P.S any idea as to which issue the pic will appear in?  It will go straight to the pool room!
  3.  Thanks guys.  We do get some great clouds and storm cells around  here which certainly help me   I agree with the HDR thing, as in not normally a fan of it,  but it did seem to work for those images.  I have a heap more that look like crap.    It is very hard to nail, and when you see the experts examples, you can't even tell.  Mine still have that ever present "steel" effect, but it's not too over the top   Chris Bott:  whoah! I just worked out your photo, That is Awesome! Edited By Paul Gauci on 04/08/2010 11:32:31
  4.  Hi all, cool thread idea!   I love clouds, my better half reckons I have my head in them all day!    Anyhow here are a few of my favorites:   Sunrise down at the beach    moon behind tree at night from backyard      Big nasty storm heading over the ocean.  Stitched panorama     Moon halo a couple of months back from my backyard     This was one of the most amazing sunsets I have ever seen. Moon in the top of the image. Facing east to shoot this one. We get some lovely storm clouds pass through here heading up the coast.     Another red sunset. This one was taken back in 2005 down at the lake. Colors are straight out of the camera.    The Sun had gone down below the horizon and we were walking home when all of a sudden the whole place turned this color.  It lasted about 5 minutes    Sunrise at the heads    These last two are looking South and North respectively from my local slope soaring spot.  The effect you see is HDR processing. Each image is blended from 3 separately  exposed raw files. It really brings out contrast clouds.       Edited By Paul Gauci on 03/08/2010 12:06:21
  5.   I have the 45 and it is still nice and snug, but I'll be keeping an eye on it. I haven't done a lot of hours on mine however.    Chinese machining hit and miss?  never!
  6.  A few more  from my bunch   cheers   Paul
  7. Posted by Chris Channon on 15/05/2010 17:47:26: Worn muffler bearings?   Where are the bearings in the silencer? Just interested to know, not having one of these engines. Thanks Chris.    Hi Chris, um it was a joke, hence the smilie at the end of it
  8.  Yeah I figured that, but it could easily be changed to your local slope and your local flyers names and still work!.....well it would at my slope!    Anyone know what software was done to do this? Is there a site that does it, or do you have to get the snip and do it with a video editor?
  9. Posted by Biggles' Elder Brother on 27/04/2010 11:18:44: He was indeed "tongue in cheek" about his "complaint" and even admitted that he found some of the vidoes very amuzing and had a personal favourite of his own!   BEB     Someone got upset enough ( I guess the copyright holders) to ask  youtube to pull all of the variants.  Just another reason to go Vimeo!     Someone mentioned the Honda one. That was the funniest for sure in my opinion!    I think you have to be "in the scene" of whatever the edit was done for to enjoy it.  I am into bikes, so it worked,  and also into slope planes, which is why I found this edit funny as well.     Edited By Paul Gauci on 13/05/2010 14:05:16
  10.  Don't worry about having removed the idle stop screw, I have removed mine and it doesn't have a problem, but I did spend some good time making sure there was no slop. I am not using a flashy digital or anything, it is just a  HS 81MG but I did make sure I set it up mechanically to give me the most servo resolution I could get.  I did braze a longer arm to the original throttle to allow this.
  11. Posted by kiwi g on 11/05/2010 20:44:26: If it was a throttle linkage , why doesnt the idle return to the stop screw, if it didnt then surely the problem would be too many revs on return to idle. Disconnect the throttle servo and try it .Edited By kiwi g on 11/05/2010 20:48:46   I'm assuming he doesn't use the throttle stop screw. Mine is removed so I can kill via ign or throttle cut. Problem with that is as they are so sensitive to rpm/opening angle, any slack is magnified.   We need to remember the OP's  problem.  Going only off what he has written,  the engine isn't idling poorly, nor is it transitioning poorly.     The problem is when he snaps the throttle shut, the engine dies. When he opens and closes it slowly, all is good.    One thing I would like to hear is if it stalls after he slowly accelerates the engine then slams it shut. He only mentioned when he suddenly opens AND closes.    Edit:   Or have I misunderstood when he said drops 300 rpm  when he snaps it open and closed?  When does it drop the 300 RPM? when you are opening the throttle? or after you have slammed it shut?         maybe the problem is worn muffler bearings?    Edited By Paul Gauci on 12/05/2010 12:06:41 Edited By Paul Gauci on 12/05/2010 12:10:09
  12.  All I can think of is a bit of slop in the throttle linkage, or maybe a servo that is a little light on with resolution either through the linkage ratio, or the servo itself.      The fact you said it is ok when you slowly bring the throttle back leads me down this path.      just for interest sake, how much smoke does it make at 30:1?  With good synthetic oil nowdays, any of these engines could go leaner than that and be perfectly fine IMHO, but that's for another topic...      Edited By Paul Gauci on 11/05/2010 07:26:58
  13. Posted by kiwibob on 19/04/2010 17:29:09: .   Blimey, Paul!!   That racer is a big 'un    Good photo, too   Wonder if it will be at Rougham Large Model Show?     Bob   .     Sorry for the delay Bob,  I just saw your post.  Yeah, that plane was big alright, and went like a rocket!  Not sure if it will be at the show you mentioned, all these shots I post are from Aus.   David E. I love those night shots!     Hey guys,  I have a photo I'd like to share, but as the rules say no photoshopping apart from the std stuff, (which is a good rule btw)  I won't put it up in the comp   This is a "pseudo" HDR done with a program called photomatix and finished off with PS. This is backlit as we had to shoot into the sun all day, and was a  very bland shot generally, I really liked the smoke, so rather than delete it I had some fun with it.  I shoot in RAW mode and so converted 3 versions of the shot, one original, one 2 stops darker, and one 2 stops higher and exposure blended them together.  It's not a true HDR image, but it does give a pretty funky effect.  Might be an option next time you get a shot that you want to keep, but had the same issues as I did with this one to begin with.  It's far from perfect in the processing, and with more effort it could be much better, but I'm still new to the process of exposure blending, especially with only one initial exposure.
  14.  Couple more, these are from yesterday  50cc on it's way to the moon     I have to find out more about this beauty, but I think it's a scratch build, around 2 meter span      nice P-40  little EDF hornet flat out, panned at 1/80th   funky reflections off the wings in the same sequence as the above image    another pan at 1/80th, my keeper rate goes WAY down at this shutter speed!
  15.  I started with .15 glo powered gliders back in the 80's (failed)  then moved onto building 40 size trainers (failed)  then gave up and had kids (success)  then got the bug again and took up slope soaring (big success thanks to coreflute and EPP)  then got into electrics, then back into bigger glo and petrol planes a couple of years back, and now have a various collection of planes from slopers through to 45cc petrol planes.        Over summer I'll be flying slope mainly, a mini jart, a full carbon 60" zipper plank, and a recently maidened Sig ninja (for a bit of old school)   When we lose our coastal slope breeze over winter, I'm back out at the field with my powered stuff. 16.  not having installed an inverted set up I can't really comment on that, but I have a sideways mounted OS-61FX in a groovy 50 3A and it works perfectly, except I had lateral balance issues, nothing a bit of lead on the left wingtip didn't fix though.    Inverted would have been neater in my plane, but I went the "safer" route of a sideways mount after a few people mentioned inverted might be an issue with relative carb to fuel tank height and flooding etc so I just went with what I knew wouldn't be a problem for my particular plane design.   Edited By Paul Gauci on 28/04/2010 01:20:27
  17.  Ah, yes, I can clearly see the differences now I look at it again.   Here is another shot of the one I posted earlier to show it's scale.  btw, this thing was a rocket in the sky too! I guess just like the full size.
  18. Steve: LOL! well I do have 2 kids who fly as well !    Nice shot Bob!  Looks like the same type of plane I posted earlier. I assume it's some kind of golden era racer, what's the name of it?    On the subject of plane identification, someone asked me what the bomber I posted earlier was.  The one above the crashing Yak........to be honest I have no idea but the thoughts were a Lancaster in US colors.  Anyone know for sure?    Whilst I'm here, what the heck, I'll throw some more up.    This was the only time I could actually capture this obscenely fast pylon model, engine off, coming in to land. and ONE more, I promise!!  Another of my 70 ish" extra with my 16 year old son at the controls (he flies much better than he shoots!)
  19.  Have you done it?     I stuck a cam onto the end of my wingtip of my little fox a while back. It wasn't a full blown camera, but one of those FPV types with a super wide lens that was transmitting, so weight and drag was very little.  All I did was make sure it was over the current Cof G and then threw some lead on the other tip.    You are right though, the angle is really cool.     I'd be working out if your plane would be happy with 280 grams more than it currently flies at.    Here's my vid for those interested. Apologies in advance for the quality. first time transmitting video, so didn't have the antenna set up properly, and for the first bit had a dirty lens!  oh, and my encoding skills were a little rusty. But apart from all that it's fine!   http://vimeo.com/2990131
  20.  Hi David, definitely not a pro photographer here, I just shoot to share, and I don't sell my images, although I have had a few of my images "stolen" by commercial RC websites in the past, but that's for another topic.   Anyway, here are some more. The first 2 are mine. A mini Jart and my 50CC extra.  The jart is around 36" span to give an idea of scale, fast and damn hard to shoot!   Hope I'm not overdoing the postings?      opus doing over 130 mph at the bottom of a DS loop  Please don't banish me for a heli photo!
  21. Posted by Pete B on 12/04/2010 17:45:41: Some quality shots there, Paul, very nice indeed! Pete   Cheers Pete!    Megapixel, that's a super sharp shot indeed!   Garthy, you don't have to photochop a moon shot,  it just takes positioning.....and the right time of month of course!   Here's a few more to add.
  22.  Top stuff Steve! Great photos, thanks for sharing.
  23.  Hi all, just joined, and  thought I'd throw a few of my favorite shots up. I notice a couple of familiar names on these forums as well. Can't believe I haven't checked this place out until now!   Cheers  Paul  Edit:   you may like to click on the image to view as there seems to be some jaggy resizing going on, esp in the first one         Edited By Paul Gauci on 12/04/2010 17:27:52 Edited By Paul Gauci on 12/04/2010 17:30:00
