  1. Simon & james,   Thanks chaps I hoped it was right, just couldn't imaging Hk selling something THAT wrong & I thought maybe I was missing the plot until I saw that pic of a similar setup.   Good idea on moving the ail rod position James, i really don't want it too mad for a start.     advice appreciated -- thanks again.     next task with it is to find the centre of gravity - nothing in the instruction "manual", nothing on the net for this model & nothing on hobbyking reviews or the forum. i guess if I can find a build blog or manual for a F16 the same size, it should be somewhere near the same pointof balance ??     @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  2. That F100 S Sabre is a nice machine Kozmyk, but just not my thing   I'm not sure what is but some aircraft really apeeal to me, others I admire when others fly them. The Hunter is certainly near or at the top of my list, maybe only narrowly beated by the Mig29 or F22 raptor.   Listen to me rambling !!!! Hunter, F22, Mig .......... all from the bloke that 9 months ago wouldn't have known anything other than a spitfire at a glance ! Maybe I am taking this hobby TOO seriously @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);@import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);

  4. @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css); Hi Chaps, me again   I have just bought a cheapo F-16 from a bmfa member. it's the basic foamie from Hobbyking & overall the build up this evening has been easy.   My "problem" is the aileron & elevator setup !   i have had a few Delta wings & setting them up is no trouble at all, but this one is weird (to me)   there are only 2 servo's operating the 2 ailerons and 2 elevators   I can see how when I bank right, both the Ail & Elev on the right side move up & left side down etc - no problem   But when I pull back or push forward on the stick, all 4 will go up or down together ?? Maybe this is right ......... just doesn't add up in my head   Below is a pic of a similar setup (somebody please tell me I'm not missing something !)         @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);Edited By john haz on 04/04/2011 20:44:35
  5. I did read all that thread yesterday Tim, got pretty confused when they started to get into the debate ! Still undecided ..... but my chepaie F16 has turned up today, so I can ponder this evening, see if any more advice / opinions are posted here & order one tomorrow
  6. Slough have the HH kit for £125, which seems ok ( £40 - £50 more than the sabre / mirage !)  Add a wemotec fan £50 Add a ESC £0 (I have a 100A spare)  Add Servo's - not a lot Add motor ... A 1600kv / 500 class outrunner £24 ?  All in for a shade over £200 & I can use my 6S 3000's or 5000's
  7. leccy... That is a real stunner ! My problem is (as above) it's more ceonomical for me to go 6S than 4s, due to having o 4s batteries. I have looked at bungies & could use one but not sure if I would get it right, but I feel fairly confident I could use a dolly if the hunter would work that way.  Gotta be honest, I prefer the bigger flyfly models over the landers, but my hobby fund isn't a bottomless pit & I have to weigh up "wants" against cost the chances of getting in the air fairly safely.  I guess the ff hunter with a wemotec fan & 6s 3000 power would be something to aim for IF it all works out affordable.
  8. Thanks for the advice Tim. I thought that with 6s power it might be easier to hand launch, maybe not ! I have spent all weekend bouncing between these Landers & the flyfly range. I love the size of the flyfly's but not sure I want another sabre. The mig is a cracker, but expensive to nail together with twin fans.  Not keen on the hawk, mirage or F4 so they are out. That leaves me with the flyfly F22 or hunter, both of which I think would be ok on my 6s/3000's  I'm not over fussy which way to go but really want to avoid buying yet another set of batteries - if I can use my 6 or 3S/2200's, it keeps the cost sensible. As always, I value your advice & if you are willing to tell me which you would go for, I'm all ears
  9. OK, so I have changed my mind again over the weekend & decided that the 1.4mtr sabre is just a bit too big. Pretty much decided on the Lander Hawker Hunter HERE  This one appears to be for a 4s setup & hand launch - all fine But, the airframe for the 6s version is the same  I am thinking of using the HL kit & fitting it out with the 6s fan & motor Fan & Motor  All I am asking really is .. Does this seem ok (I can then run it with my existing 6s/3000 flightmag batts  Too heavy to hand launch ? Would a Dolly do the job ?
  10. yup, that's the one i'm looking at Ed - nice model for not much money isn't it @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  11. Yes, the suggested motor is a B36 1600 or 1800kv. Presumably 1600 for 6s & 1800 for 5s.   I have got a 1800kv spare here but it's an outrunner, i can't see why an outrunner wouldn't be ok but best to ask when the "suggested" is an inrunner ?? @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  12. Hi Guys & Girls,   I have counted my pennies this weekend & decided to take the plunge & buy a bigger model. I am quite keen on the flyfly sabre as it seems to hand launch so well & looks a cracker. Only a foamie, but that suits me.   My question is a 2 part thing really,   I like the sabre but prefer the look of the F-22 Raptor by flyfly. After looking at a few youtube shots of both, the sabre seems to launch very well & the F-22 appears to "dip" quite a bit. I *want* the F-22, but something is telling me to get the sabre. Opinions welcomed.   My other question is about the wemotec fan FAN The suggested motor is a B36 inrunner, is there any good reason why I can not use a 36mm 1800kv outrunner motor I have here as a spare for my trex 500 heli ?   Of course, if anybody knows of anything that I might like the look of, I'm all ears. No rush to order until monday, so my itchy finger is staying put for now     @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);

    Yep, i can see the sense in using better quality fans in larger models. I guess the F18 would benefit from one but it's ok "as is" so why spoil a perfectly good little jet.   500 - yes, it was plural only because I set up two of them, I think Mrs H would seriously question my sanity if I had more than a dozen or so (did have 8 at one point but down to 6, the other two have been replaced by more than 2 planes LOL)     @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);

    Excellent comparison tests you did there Tim ! and of course it shows just how good the Wemotec is against the cheapies. i had always assumed that thrust would go hand in hand with watts, obviously not with the differences your results show.   Of course the problem now is..... if I get one wemotec, everything else will want converting - i can hear those pound coins rattling already   I got home from work at a sensible time this afternoon, the boss is away for the day, so i have had a very enjoyable time checking over & setting up my 500 foodmixers @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);

    More good advice, thanks Tim   The wemotec fan unit looks quite expensive (£50?) compared to HK products, I presume it is worth the extra ?   TBH I love the look of the flyfly raptor but is seems that the sabre is more inclined to hand launch successfully & I really don't want to ROG if i can avoid it as our field isn't fantastic.   6S/3000 or 6S/5000 are the ideal for me as I have plenty for my 500/600 heli's .......... talking of which .......... FOOD MIXERS !!!! How can you insult such fine pieces of engineering with that line !! No cheap foam to be found on my heli & they don't need ROG or hand launch @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);

    Good to see you're getting repairs done & a replacement - nice work on the F-18, very impressed !!!   I have just done a bit more on the sabre tonight, the nose was taped up with silver coloured "gaffa" type tape as i didn't expect it to last more than a couple of flights, but now it's a keeper Still a bit of crossweave tape showing on that fragile intake, but she's looking a bit tidier & ready for some more fun.     I run it on 3S/1300 although they are very tight under the canopy, but it gives me 4 mins flat out or 5+ if i ease up a touch. Love it - now i can see what you were saying, it looks so good in the air (not so good on the ground but i'm no "show" pilot).The F-18 is my No.1 now, having taken the place from my Roo jet.Not as fast as the Roo but so easy to fly it's unreal !! I can land it almost every time within a few feet, smoothly as she glides in (over the top of power wires 60' away, shut off the power & it loses height lovely.   Now i want a larger scale & have been looking at the Flyfly sabre / mirage / raptor. It seems they would run ok on a 6s/3000 (got 8 of those for my 500 heli's), it's just deciding if i can hand launch - the sabre seems best but i just love that Raptor !   The F16 arrived today but was in fact a hawk ! The guy i bought it from mixed up two parcels, so now we are exchanging them, hope to get the F16 mon or tues (cheapie project like the F18)Trouble is, these jets take my attention away from the heli practice but i enjoy it too   It's good to get some free time to get back on the forum, although the 30mph winds are probably helping that way !   john
  17. Sorry to hear all that Tim, especially the F-18. But with as many years model experience, i'm sure it won't grind you down.   Does it make me feel better about my 4 write offs in 9 months...... NOPE, worse because it's happened to somebody that CAN fly !! @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);

    Back again

    HI all,   Well, I havn't been here much just lately, after spending 2 months locked up in HMP Norwich !   LOL, only joking. Lots going on here, moving business premises, work has been heavy & i got much deeper into my helicopters & added a second 500 and a 600 to my little fleet.   Since building my HK F-18 in late december, it's been hanging from the ceiling & never flown until last week. With a whole week of lovely weather I got my eye back in with the old faithful Roo jet and then tried the F-18, it's excellent !   Thanks to Tim & the crew, I upgraded it from the start & she really is a cracker.   5000kv motor (33A) 40A Turnigy ESCModified top hatch to fit the 3s/2200 Elevator rod moved & mix programmed to rudder channel (Tim's idea) underside covered in vehicle grade vinyl (no marks as yet) Various yellow vinyl "flashes" added to help orientation   Flying weight 700g 360w power (on the motor limits i know but it's holding up ok so far !)   It hand launches a treat & although not ballistic power, it's lively enough for me as it's only my 2nd EDF     and the Alfa Sabre ........ gotta be honest, i HATED this from the start, fiddly to build & the first few flights ended up with it nosing in a bit too steep, damaging the front intake.   Last week I decided to put it in the air & fly it to death, if only to eliminate it from my hangar !! But i love it !! Tim was right, this little jet has so much presence & looks stunning in the air. The intake is taped up, she has various battle scars but on a 3s/1300 will fly for 4 mins (160w) and once it gets on step it's ok for speed too (scale like rather than quick, but ok).   Latest project is a HK F-16 foamie, which will not be built to their suggested spec, hoping to get around the same power as the F18 & fingers crossed it will hand launch ok.   Looking forward to catching up a bit on here now

  20. Where is Mr Grumpy then ??   Unless I missed a chapter, Chrissy was taking his laptop into the hospital so he could come on here ???   Hope he's on the mend Chrissy, i have only spoken to him a couple of times (here) but he's one of the regulars & we all miss him   @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  21. Excellent couple of days here in foggy Cambridgeshire   Weds, got to the field around 11am, my flying buddy turned up about 12 & we had some real fun until about 2:30pm when the fog came down quite a bit  - quit while yer ahead  seemed to work well.   Managed to do 18 batteries in various models (Roo, Jetiger, Lightning & P40)   Thurs:  A bit later starting as we decided to go together in the 4x4, the field is very slippery now & no chance of using my work mondeo Got there 11:15 with FB John & had nearly 3 hours of fun again.  The first hour was pretty foggy so I "got my eye in" with the little mustang (it has a lot of LED's fitted, maybe sad for a warbird but it's great for foggy days).   Then the Roo, 450 heli & P40.      A lot more chatting today, so only managed 10 batteries but still an excellent day.   The only downside to both days was the lack of any breeze, moreso today which made launching the jetiger impossible & I really want to maiden my F18 but not doing it without a bit of wind.   Friday is looking good - hoping to do 2-3 hours but we will see what the weather has in store for us.     @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  22. Brian,   Yep, the COG is at the front edge of the launch holes  (where you poke yer fingers to throw it).    If you havn't done it yet, be careful hand launching, they aren't overpowered as standard & I found it almost impossible to launch into no wind.     If you throw it slightly nose up into a 5mph breeze it will climb gently & get up to speed.    I use mine with a 1300mah tipple lipo pushed as far back as the bay will allow.   HTH  @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  23. @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css); My motor has a 3mm shaft, thinking that a bigger motor / shaft might just rip the fuse apart ?   Weak motor mount  ....  one of my biggest problems with the mustang was the cheap art-tech motor mounts, they break too easily.    I have made a balsa firewall now which seems very sturdy but it seems the motor shaft is now taking the impact.     I did wonder if a larger prop-saver device was available but havn't found any (my Roo uses a PS on a 6x4 & it's brill).   Another idea was to set the esc to stop the prop on closing the throttle, but I guess if it does this with the prop vertical I'm going to get the same prob.    A folding prop  might just be the answer  !      I will try this before buying a fast motor / small prop combo for it.   many thanks       Edited By john haz on 26/12/2010 16:00:22
  24. Well, I hope everyone is having a good Christmas break, isn't it great to have a week at home without the aggro of work getting in the way of playing with models   I took my mustang out today & yet again have bent a motor shaft.  I seem to bend a shaft about every 10th flight & am getting fed up replacing them   Got me thinking  ..... is there a reason I can't use a higher kv motor & smaller prop ??     I know it won't look scale, but that doesn't bother me at all.   My Roo jet weighs in about the same as the mustang & I have a 2200kv motor & 6x4 prop.       It gets away on anything over 50% throttle & is pretty quick too !   Any reason not to try it ?     @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  25. Get well soon Myron.@import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
