  1. I think that the 'normal' person would never start their I.C. engine in the lounge or kitchen or bedroom for obvious reasons. Shed or garage, maybe with ventilation etc. It is so tempting do do that 'last check',( bit like that 'last flight' with an electric motor indoors 'because there is no smoke, no oily spray and very little noise'. My own experience was that I was checking some control function or other on a 0.40 size brushless motor plane and decided to do it indoors whilst swmbo was out. I actually loosened the prop right off. The motor started unexpectedly at full throttle. The plane didn't move, but the prop spun up very fast, shot forwards and up and one tip embedded itself about 6mm into the ceiling 3" away from a flourescent tube light fitting. I had to remove it and fill the hole pretty rapidly. Now, that could have been my eye that the prop hit. It could also have smashed the tube and brought it down on my head or face. So, whenever I have changed anything, battery, transmitter function, between flights or if I have any doubts or second thoughts, brief distraction, I always take the prop completely off. If I had been working on an I.C. engine, I would have had to physically start the thing and I have had 55+ years of practice and ingrained habit keeping clear of them, partly because they are noisy..

  3. Oh, well, thev have both sold. The book that I thought was the better one sold for far less than the other, due to it being older, (rarer?) I suppose. Nobody seems to want my Blohm & Voss replica manuals.
  4. I don't see the point in telling anyone to let the plane go past and land it when it is going away from you! That shows a lack of control and confidence. If Jez's landings were smooth and under control earlier then he should be at the stage of landing it on a particular point, on the runway or imaginary 'runway' approaching him so that it stops close by,so that he can shut down the model and remove it quickly out of the way of other flyers. (Even if flying on his own this is still good practice.) I think the way to go is to make lots and lots of short flights, not a few long ones. Learn to approach accurately and land it in one selected spot, not just anywhere in a field before attempting anything more than a few simple rolls and loops. Lots of take-offs and lots of landings. (Safe ones!)

  7. Gents, this is what is shown on the O.S. discontinued engines site for the O.S. 48 Surpass, so I guess its all one assembly, one pin, two pads. Part No. 45806000.   11. I would try cleaning it and putting it in a very hot oven. Stand it on its side on something like an old cup and the pin will probably slide out on its own.

    LMS are not alone

    In my nearest big town, on one of the main streets there was a new block of flats erected, underneath there was space for three big shops. In the last month there have been reports, generally, that tanning salons are showing a downturn in customers. Two of the shop premises have been taken over, in the last six weeks by -------- one enormous tanning salon. This looks to have been a bad move, especially timed, as it was, to the current cloudless weather! The other unit was taken over by a wine warehouse, now I bet they are doing alright! Unfortunately my nearest big model shop is 40 miles away.
  13. I was bidding on a USED Bixler on Ebay. With motor and servos. No ESC No battery, no receiver. Cost for the same item ...New - £40.91 direct from HobbyKing's English warehouse. I was prepared to go to £30. Somebody paid £56 ! Why? Why not research something for 2 minutes and save £15 and get something new with a guarantee? They are not that hard to assemble are they?

I think that if I were to start up a photography business to sell aerial photos in a professional manner I would investigate the use of a tethered helium balloon carrying a camera rather than a radio controlled model, for several reasons. (One being that a digital SLR could be used.) Although again I do not know the legal position!
  16. There are small propellers available, but they will be very hard and sharp! So I won't point them out! They will also need an adaptor to the 1.5mm. shaft. Search the internet.

If anyone uses eBay regularly they will find that the site is now piling on more and more links to things that they think you might be interested in on the 'front page' ......There are yards and yards of pictures of, for example, model aeroplane engines.. My wife is a quilter and demon needleworker. In the past I have bought and researched items for her hobby from the auction site. One of these was a plastic disc with holes around the edge for making braiding from cotton or thread. I was quite amused that eBay thought that we would be interested in bidding for a bicycle brake cable or a rusty car sub-frame leaning against a garage wall because it had the words 'brake disc' in the listing. Don't really want to start a new thread, but I have been doing a bit of casual dealing on Ebay recently and getting fed up with the time that purchases are taking to arrive, later and later, mostly, I think because of the postal service. But.... Sunday the 7th July I bought an item from an ebay 'business' about 70 miles away. Economy delivery (2nd class post.) It was marked as despatched on the 9th. Expected delivery Saturday the 13th or Monday the 15th. Stayed at home or nearby all day Monday and yesterday, not just to receive that but for other reasons as well. Nothing has arrived so I contacted the seller tonight. They havent sent it yet! Reply 'Just taken over new business, sorry, sending it first class tomorrow!' Might ask for a refund for my postage after it arrives. Won't use them again. You can get things delivered from Hong Kong in 4 days over a weekend. On the other hand one seller returned £1 postal charge unexpectedly because they had overcharged me.
  21. I will try to save the pilot's blushes, so I won't say where this happened. If you know of the Multiplex Xeno, it is a foam flying wing that can be folded up for transport. This chap was happily flying around with some abandon and suddenly his NEW Xeno parted in the middle. depositing motor, receiver and lipo almost on top of us. Not the locking mechanism or the hinge breaking as you might think, but the foam section holding the hinge had not a spot of glue on it where it should have been attached to the wing. Held only by friction.

  23. I've mentioned this before, but a long time ago. I bought and built a Graupner Speedy kit about thirty years ago just as I started to fly R/C It was about 30" span with a Cox 0.49 engine, no throttle and rudder/ elevator control only. Very lightly built out of Balsa and very, very fast. Completely unsuitable for me. My friends son, who was about 12 at the time was a demon flyer, really good, so I gave the plane to him. The first time he flew it the flight was going really well, zooming backwards and forwards, the low passes were spectacular! Unfortunately there was a low wire netting fence at one end of the field. The plane hit the fence at high speed, most of it went five feet through the fence in tiny pieces!

  25. Peter, I don't think there is a Mk.3. The Mk 2 was improved a few years ago with a venturi extension and an angled needle valve. The Mk. 1 has the cooling shroud, which some people remove. I also had a Mk. 1 , I found it easier to start than the 2 which I could never start by hand. It was smoother as well, probably because it was less powerful. I don't think I would ever run one of these without some castor in the fuel. Smells good as well.
