  1. http://www.gvmac.com/ Have a look here, Alisdair Sutherland had float design stuff on a link I think. I have not looked for a while. I have a copy (somewhere) of a pdf file which he had on his site, of float design.
  2. In the last week we have had a good variety of military heli's and planes, plus a good run of civilian heli's and light aircraft too. Even had the "Blue Peter" crowd with a heli "doing" Ben Nevis. None of our local kids even as much as looked up.
  3. For me this has to have been the best day this year. Yet I did not fly . I had the "plaster cast" off my leg/ankle on Wednesday past. My first day out to the strip, just getting out and saying hello to the guys then a bit shopping, Fantabadozy.
  4. I think only you can solve that. The argument for castor or synthetic or even mixed has been going for quite a few years. I can say I have gone all synthetic base fuel with no problems, indeed as I do not now have sticky or gummy residue I am pleased. From what I gather the majority of Alchohol based fuel users are now using synthetic. To make matters worse one Manufacturer specified one type or did, while the main distributer said they would only cover waranty when the other was used.
  5. If it works don't "fix" it. There is an awful lot of opinion out there regarding fuel. Strange, as what is opined to be useless is used by many modelers over quite a few years, successfuly. Use your GX-5 and have fun.
  6. This really should be posted to ALL the Elected nitwits in the London Parliament. Second thought, would'nt work due to all the Nitwits who let them off with so much stupidity.
  7. Got it this morning   Not had time to read it yet, just flicked at the pictures. Extra 300 looks nice, got a kit of a different make still to do. Saw the scales pan and wondered first why someone wanted to weigh their glow-start? I'll read it later to find out, oops, I just realised it is an article on a complicated model stand. Need a bigger car? Nah, I will stick to a lighter and simpler thingy and keep the car I have.  Looks like the RCV article might be interesting, might make up for the foamy stuff  Moved past the heli revue to find another foam thing, didn't read, checked the recomended price, £154:00 for a squirt of foam in a mould. Ruddy 'eck, work skilfully once, then automatic gravy train. Leccy stuff,, Ok nowt wrong with that, sometimes. The lathe stuff might be interesting. Och Weel, I did get the mag cheaper by subscription. Not a bad mix. Smile David, Bye, Bob
  8. Hi,  I too would like to know this. I have not tried any Dealers yet. Bob
  9. i hope you enjoy the modeling. I think most model flyers have the same problem of "can't look before buying". Even when a model shop is within reasonable distance they cannot carry a massive variety. From other modellers, forums, mags, visiting shows and clubs to get info, is the way most folk get to see a decent variety of models. Enjoy, Bob
  10. Fit all the parts, then with empty fuel tank do some CoG checking. I do not know if the battery can be moved to assist though,,,,  Enjoy, Bob
  11. Hi Eric, poor news. I powered up only to find the recent gales have done my aerial no good at all. It might be some time before I repair it due to my leg being in plaster. Looking forward to a QSO with you sometime.  Bob
  12. The info I got, stated that the Display Flightline will be an all day activity with more input from the Trader Teams. The Aerobatic and Scale competitions seem to have been dropped, though I don't have info on the evening free flight stuff. Enjoy yourselves, it should still be interesting this year at least.
  13. Hi Grant, try club "matey" Duncan. He had a transit van size bundle of mags going back many years, was trying to find a new home for 'em some time back.
  14. Thats the one, one was flying at Woodvale last year. I am just trying to remember where one was re-listed for sale just one to two weeks ago.
  15. I have found that the personal approach is more appreciated. I have used farms for more than model flying and have seldom had a refusal. I did some homework as to the crop or what animals were there or nearby before asking. I admit only short term permission was sought at first, BUT from that more regular ongoing permission has been granted as trust builds up.
  16. Methinks Timbo protests to much  does he secretly love the beach?  never mind T, your secret is safe with us. Anyway nowt wrong with letting nature keep the runway near flat, if that is what you fancy Have fun now,
  17. Bit safer for a flyaway half of the flyaway area is almost totally unpopulated. The Southport guys don't find it much of a problem. Try it. Mode one is still popular too,,,,,,, as are the veteran cars rallies
  18. Bit safer for a flyaway half of the flyaway area is almost totally unpopulated. The Southport guys don't find it much of a problem. Try it. Mode one is still popular too,,,,,,, as are the veteran cars rallies I did not like the blown sand on dry days tho'
  19. Possibly Overtec (was Overlander). Given it was a very high speed little leccy.
  20. Went on the beach with the Southport guys a few times, Like flying on rails with the prevailing onshore wind. I used a filter on the carb air inlet, the local guys don't use them. Soft sand can be a major problem, cars sink . Might be local bylaws which apply to model flying.  enjoy
  21. Best learn to fly on land first, then if you wish, put floats on your trainer. Got to keep the water out tho' . Good point from Eric, they do mostly need more engine power than is required from runway take-off. A plane which uses a .40 /.46 should be fitted with a .53 for comfort. Do some looking on the web, there are many video clips of flying off water.
  22. Two things, I posted my cheque for subscription renewal on 7th January 2008. Magicallia this week sent me a reminder that I had not paid. I phoned Magicallia yesterday, they claimed they had not received it until the 19th. Yeah, maybe. One of those years I will not have this sort of niggle. Re February issue "Trade account" I accessed the Macgregor site to look at the new sunspecs, very difficult too find they are, I gave up. have fun, Bob
  23. Garnock Valley Model Aircraft Club Cairngorm Model Flying Club Index (Welcome) Page  Hi again Iain, try the above links. the Cairgorm one has a list of WATERPLANE EVENTS. Alasdair Sutherland's info appears to relate mostly to floats, he is a most helpful chap tho' and full of info. You might even get your question/s printed in a magazine  . He is not an electricery guru though Bob
  24. Hi Ian, I suggest that you have a look at Alasdair Sutherlands website. You have had some good advice already re experience first. I also suggest that if possible you attend one or two of the Waterplane Splash-ins which someone at your club will have the details of, as posted by Colin MacLean.  The line drawings on the link you posted show the propellor arcs to be VERY close to the water surface and likely to hit the suface. Water is not like solid ground it ripples and forms waves, they would also get hit hard by spray. Look at some of the fullsize Flying Boat sites, you will see that most have fairly deep hulls or the engines mounted high If you E-mail me I can send you this years Splash-in dates. Good luck with the project though.  Bob
