  1. Well its finished all but a couple of minor odds and ends, I shimmed the eng mount to give me 1 degree d/thrust, I feel happier at that but not terribly confident! The all up weight with battery is just under 9 lbs and the C of G is 135mm, need to check this with Vera later. that I can adjust with battery location. So all I have to do now is fly the thing....Hmmmmm I'll look into the Screwfix thing Bruce I've never been very confident with finger tip method that i've used in the past. Were lucky in that our field is well out of the way and not noise sensitive, I really like my Dle's but they are a bit loud.
  2. Thanks Jeff I was typing whilst you posted! I'll look into those, I tend to go for known brands normally but I like to try new stuff as well if it looks good and gets decent reviews.
  3. Thanks for all suggestions I've a pretty good idea of what I'm looking for now, the rudder will get a F 3152 or equivalent similar for elevator, for ailerons I'll probably go for the H 225s, nice size and I have a few of the little blue alloy servo arms going spare. Think I'll still go for 4 aileron servos so that I have the option of trying out Bob's ideas.
  4. Posted by John Duncker on 18/08/2018 23:18:45: Anything from a Ripmax SD200 up will do on the ailerons. Get something with a bit of extra grunt on the rudder if you want to knife edge. Digital is better too. I think I used a Futaba 3152 on mine. I have an Align ds510m lined up for the rudder, not quite as powerful as the F 3152 but hopefully good enough and again 30g in weight, do you think it will do the job? Specifications: Stall torque: 3.7kg.cm(4.8V) 4.6kg.cm(6.0V) Motion speed: 0.13sec/60°(4.8V) 0.11sec/60°(6.0V) Rating voltage: DC 4.8-6V Temperature range: -20°C~+60°C Dimension: 35x15x29.2mm Weight: 29.0g john Edited By john s on 18/08/2018 23:51:48
  5. Posted by john stones 1 on 18/08/2018 22:16:25: I like hitec 225s usually buy the mg version. Just looked up the spec on those and they look to be the sort of thing I'm looking for, I particularly like the weight at 30g, as I'm wanting to build the panic as light as I can. john.
  6. I have a panic biplane 48" kit on order from Avicraft that I'm unusually exited about! I remember them from years ago and what fun they were to watch. I managed to buy a new Saito 82b on Ebay for a really good price that I think will suit the plane nicely. So now I'm looking for servos, I would like to put 4 servos in the wings one for each aileron to make assembly/disassembly easier, I'm thinking along the lines of smaller and lighter than standard size servos but with decent torque and speed. If anyone has any suggestions I'd be happy to read them, there's an awful lot of servos out there! john.

The C of G location on this thing is discussed a lot on quite a few forums, I'm thinking I'll try for around 14-14.5cm from L/E at the root, that's todays thinking anyway!, be interesting to hear where you end up with yours. john Has anyone tried a Vanessa Rig??..works a treat. That looks interesting! looked on utube to see it in action, it looks like you could use it with the plane inverted or have I got that wrong? john
  8. Thanks for the feedback Gary and Bruce it's appreciated. I checked the upthrust with my mobile and its exactlyish 1.5deg and obvious to the eye, this is built in with the laser cutting and not a jigging/assembly error, I'm beginning to think there are variations of this model around. On the C of G, one guy who seems to know what he's talking about on one of the US forums claims that 5 1/4" or 13cm is good, and Bruce's findings are beginning look that way also, I'm trying to put as much weight forward, like you I hate adding lead, I moved the eng fwd 5mm and replaced the t/wheel assy for a lighter one, it all helps! Our field is too rough for spats, shame cause they do look nice. For the cowl I was going to do what Bruce is suggesting, 4 hardwood blocks straight onto the b/head, self tappers into balsa!!! sorry just can't do it! john
  9. Thanks Bruce it would be good to see where you end up with it. It'll be a couple of weeks before mine is ready to go, and I to will be getting a more experienced flier to do the honours. john

  11. Interesting what martin was saying about different wing thickness, I read on one of the US forums that they can be 55 or 70mm, mines yellow/black and is 70mm. I'll try to post a pic of the wing tube area as it's quite different to Gary's, mine does not have the batt/tank floor with the velcro strap slots and the rear fuel tank frame is built in, as I'm using a DLE 20 with a smaller tank I'd have preferred Gary's setup.

  14. Thanks Gary that will be interesting to know. Mine arrived with the pilot rattling around inside the canopy so I cut him and most off the flooring away just leaving a 15mm cross brace and the fwd inst panel, it's now 108g lighter and still strong enough. john
  15. Hi, I got my yellow/black version this morning and like Gary have done a fair amount of research online noting quite a few people having problems finding a good balance point, even those using the correct procedure as Gary described. I put the fuz on my bench and set it up square using the canopy seat as reference, at this the wing and t/plane incidences are 0 degrees so to me this seems OK, then I move to the eng b/head and find that it has upthrust of 1.5 -2 degrees and around 1 degree of right thrust. So upthrust and very little right side thrust, I'm definately no expert but this seems wrong to me, Upthrust!!! any suggestions ? Hope I've posted this in the right place. john
  16. Hi Scott, I've had some great buys on Ebay over the last few years, however after using the site for a while I have made some rules for myself that I normally follow, red wine moments apart!. Decide what the item is worth to you and make that bid within 15/20 secs of the end time not before. treat used items like engines, servos, receivers etc, with great caution and only bid if the seller has very solid feedback. Good luck with your bid. Lohn
  17. Hi Scott, sorry, was not trying to be a smart arse about how much I paid for it, I get a lot of stuff direct from China and am allmost allways pleased with the result. I was going to mount it on the Bixler pointing forward and a little nose down. After watching your vids I think that I might end up with a lot of sky/cloud and not much else!, guess I'll have to experiment a bit. Do you think it might work ok at at 30 ish degrees of the nose with a little down? By the way I lived in and around Edinburgh for several years, and now living in Ayrshire miss it terribly. John
  18. Nice to see how well the mini dv cam works considering its low cost. Mine arrived from China the other day, just under £7.00 delivered!!!. Now trying to work out the best angle of view to use on my Bixler, Hmmm John

  20. I'm sorry to be negative, but, Concord only made money for BA because they were given it at a huge cost to the taxpayer, they got them essentially free and a small mountain of spares to keep them going. I think Concord was a beautiful machine, I live near Prestwick airport where they used to do crew training, and when walking my dog on Royal Troon golf course it would pass overhead on the approach, Stunning!. However it was a financial disaster for the tax paying public!. John
  21. He obviously needs to move up to medium size gassers, say 50cc should be about right! John
  22. John, pleased that you have a result, must try the ammonia treatment that Alan suggested in future. Cheers , John
  23. Hi John, I've just completed a Balsanova 120 kit and was quite upset when, after a great deal of care, the fuselage ended up with a "slight twist", now its complete with tail plane and wing level, and incidences correct, its not at all obvious. Without applying set squares etc to it you would not know, and am sure it will make no noticeable difference to its flying performance. So, if it is only slight, maybe its not worth worrying about!. My work, recently retired, was in engineering on full size aircraft, so sometimes I find its difficult to work with natural materials where inaccuracies are relative rather than unacceptable. Hope the build goes well. John
  24. Hi Gaz, somebody was asking about this build a few days ago, so my remarks will be familiar to some, sorry. I put one together after not flying for a long time, using a 52 four stroke, and covered in my favourite covering Solartex, easy to use and adds strength. Its an absolute treat to fly you have made a good choice!. I followed this build thread when I built mine and found it very helpful. **LINK** John
