  1. I have found solar-lac brushed or painted to have very little protection against 10% nitro fuel. Exhaust residue soon bubbled up the orange paint on my plane. It was fully hardened and the brushed-on coats had not been thinned at all. I can only speak as I have found. I now never use solar-lac on glow models.   Edited By David Ovenden on 25/07/2017 17:57:26
  2. I believe that the thread on the Saito 82 exhaust is 12mm x 1mm pitch. IIRC the Saito 125 uses 13mm x 1mm pitch on its exhaust which is only 1mm bigger diameter. Maybe there is enough metal on your Saito 82 to tap out to 13mm (as it is the same TPI as the existing damaged thread) and then use a saito 125 exhaust. (Or tap out your muffler to 13mm too and then just buy a 13mm header pipe from a Saito 125?) I don't have a Saito 82 or Saito 125 to check with so I'm not sure how do-able it would be. Maybe Engine Doctor would know?
  3. Posted by Geoff Parkes on 22/07/2017 08:59:57: I have never posted on this forum before but I think what has happened over the last few days regarding Traplet plans is really bad news for our hobby, yes the average age of aeromodelers is probably mid 50,s and the average age of dedicated model builders - not ARTF or foamy planes ,but plan built projects is probably older than this, I class myself as one of these, the thrill of going through the plans lists , picking subjects to put on a list of possible projects, picking the subject that will take all winter to build, getting the bits together to turn a pile of balsa into a fair copy of the full size, and finally flying the thing, the sense of accomplishment will never be replaced , I was planning to build a Dennis Bryant Chipmunk this winter, and was planning on ordering the plans, fibre glass bits on Friday, so, I suppose I am "lucky"that it happened this week not last, i have spoke to Tony Nijhous regarding his plans and he said he stopped both Traplet and My hobby store selling his designs last year- he must have had his doubts, i thought it was funny that that Traplet were offering all round discounts on there products, but lets hope that some one or something can save them/ With the benefit of hindsight, (and of course people always say that don't they?) it is a great shame that My Hobby Store relinquished ownership of all the RCM&E/Nexus/MAP etc plans to Traplet only a few weeks ago. So now we have lost availability of almost all the UK model plans at one fell swoop. If MHS had kept control of their plans/parts we would still have a great number of great plans available to us. As others have commented, hopefully from the ashes someone can resurrect the plans business. The upside is that I may be more inclined to get on with building some of the models for which I already have the plans!
  4. According to Danny Fenton in his Hawker Fury thread Traplet are in trouble. He wrote earlier. .. "I am not sure of all the facts but I heard that Traplet went into receivership this morning, so where that leaves us with regard the plans and parts we have ordered I do not know. I have not received any of my order yet. As soon as i hear more I will let you know. It is shocking news, the modelling mag industry is having a hrad time indeed, but I didn't realise Traplet were so vulnerable. Cheers Danny" Edited By David Ovenden on 19/07/2017 22:28:19
  5. Posted by John Timmis on 19/07/2017 08:06:21: Hi all I thought that this might be of interest. It shows a magazine article from 197? by Dennis Bryant in which he shows how he make struts for biplanes. The magazine cover featured Dennis Bristol Bulldog. The metal panelling was kitchen foil attached with double side tape. Cheers John. John, It may just be my computer, but there is no article or link I can see with your post.
  6. Frankly they were all agreed - the committee's compulsory pre-flight Tai Chi training was a step too far!
  7. Paul and Dave's bargain FPV specs did not work as well as they expected!
  8. BMFA demonstration of approved pre- take-off "warm-up" techniques as part of presentation to Sports Council funding committee.
  9. Posted by Dickw on 18/07/2017 10:05:13: Pleased to hear you got it sorted OK. The UniSens is a useful little gadget isn't it. I also have the 280 amp version, and that works OK as well - in my case it is with Jeti telemetry. Dick Yes, its very compact and so much cheaper and more convenient than using multiple discrete sensor units. And.... it supports multiple radio protocols too! A very handy gadget and I'm surprised you don't see more of them about. I suppose lack of English instructions and software must limit its uptake in the UK.
  10. Posted by ted hughes on 18/07/2017 09:52:33: NASA faked moon landing.OK NASA, we're on to you! Photographic proof:**LINK** Edited By ted hughes on 18/07/2017 09:53:25 Absolutely brilliant! Made my morning.
  11. Martin, here's a thought. US president Donald Trump claims most news is "Fake News". He's also well in with the Russians according to some reports. I would think he would be just the person to investigate the moon landing conspiracy! Edited By David Ovenden on 17/07/2017 22:44:44
  12. Managed a quick flight this evening. The telemetry all worked fine - altitude, vario, rpm and battery pack data (v,A, mah.)
  13. Several of these tied together? **LINK**   Keith you beat me to it! Edited By David Ovenden on 17/07/2017 22:22:31
  14. #Posted by David Ovenden on 06/07/2017 12:58:55: Bob, interesting link that. Much cheaper than the Graupner list or shop price. However, I have just ordered the KINGKONG PC Communications Adapter (USB/Com) from HK European warehouse at a total shipped cost of £4.19. Will report back whether or not it works once it arrives.- Thanks to all of you who took the time to respond to this thread. The KINGKONG PC Communications Adapter duly arrived from the HK warehouse in the NL. Post took its time, but it arrived in the end. https://hobbyking.com/en_us/esc-pc-software-communication-adapter.html So, here is the feed back. The USB adapter worked perfectly for my purposes and allowed me to set up the UniSens-E for my JR DMSS radio and to update the firmware to the latest version. Once I have flown it in my test model (HK Tundra) I may well want to tweak other parameters, but so far on the bench all is working as it should. So, all in all the UniSens-E seems an excellent multi-purpose telemetry unit for electric models and the KINGKONG adapter at £4.19 including postage was a "bargain". 15. Lux Ray I tried to fill in your survey but I found your questions too generalised. For example, lots of modellers will have hundreds of different tools depending on the types of models they build and the tasks they are completing. I think you need to be more specific about the sort of market and models you are aiming to cater to. Like others I try to avoid repairs and working on models at the flying field or away from the workshop.
  16. Posted by Martyn K on 12/07/2017 14:07:30: 3. We will create a new sub forum (like 'Chip Shop' ) , so looking for a catchy name Martyn & Danny What about "Furiously Building"
  17. KC, Your comments were taken in the spirit intended. Perhaps my response came across as too negative. I do fly electric and I/C but do think a good four stroke sounds better in my scale models. I also find the braking effect of the prop turning over at tick-over helps with landing. Actually, I rather liked the idea of joining the mass build, but prefer radial engine planes. I was already toying with the idea of building an Avro Tutor (D. Bryant); Gladiator B.T.), Fairey Flycatcher (B.T.) or Gloster Gamecock (Gordon Whitehead) from plans. All these models are around the 60 inch size. So, Danny's post about the got me thinking. However, it can't be denied that the Persian Fury is much less attractive to look at than the standard Fury. Still, maybe worth considering??     Edited By David Ovenden on 10/07/2017 19:33:12
  18. Posted by kc on 10/07/2017 10:15:33:   As for transforming a most beautiful biplane into a radial engined ugly duckling just because you have a spare Saito radial hanging around ......... !!! Go electric David! My mistake KC, a working scale model of a piston-engined 30's biplane should obviously be powered by an electric motor! If we are talking ugly, what about a Fairey Flycatcher? I actually have the old BT plans for that.   Edited By David Ovenden on 10/07/2017 12:37:39 Edited By David Ovenden on 10/07/2017 12:40:23
  19. Shame it's not the Bryant Avro Tutor as I have a Saito 120 radial engine needing a (biplane) home. Won't fit in the nose of the Fury. Almost enough to make one furious! Maybe a Persian Fury variant could be considered?   Edited By David Ovenden on 08/07/2017 21:19:19 Edited By David Ovenden on 08/07/2017 21:24:01 Edited By David Ovenden on 08/07/2017 21:24:27
  20. Frank, Have sent you a new PM in light of item mentioned above!
  21. Steve, Thanks for the link. You may be right about using all 4 pins to get the most out of this unit. The SM Modellbau lead does, I think, use all 4 pins to give additional access and maximum programming possibilities. However, in the instructions it makes specific mention of being able to use other USB/comms leads (ie Graupner/Jetti/Multiplex) using only 3 pins via a "standard" servo type connector. When it arrives, we will see if it works!
  22. Bob, interesting link that. Much cheaper than the Graupner list or shop price. However, I have just ordered the KINGKONG PC Communications Adapter (USB/Com) from HK European warehouse at a total shipped cost of £4.19. Will report back whether or not it works once it arrives!
  23. Just spotted this at HK that may do the trick. I think at the price its worth a go. **LINK**
