  1. Watching with great interest David, thank you. I ordered the plan and wood set from Flying Scale Models (Doolittle Media) on 29th Dec and am awaiting their delivery. I have had an email from them following a request for acknowledgement but no delivery date specified. Laser 80 waiting! Anyone know how long they take to do a wood pack and plan? What will you cover this build with David?
  2. Thanks very much indeed Jon. It looks like you lean the idle needle until the engine is no longer is able to give a proper throttle response, then enrich it until it is just able to do so without getting over rich. Edited By GrahamWh on 16/01/2019 18:38:56
  3. Looks great David - looking forward to it arriving sometime soon hopefully! Jon, thanks for the video you posted somewhere showing you setting the main needles on a Laser twin. Pictures speak a thousand words they say. Do you have a video of setting the idle needles (on a single would be fine)? Its something I have always struggled with. Another great thing about the Lasers is that the idle screw is so large and accessible and turnable by finger and thumb - much better than the tiny hidden away ones in many other makes of engine which have you playing around with small screwdrivers. 4. Hi Nigel. I agree with Bob. I think learning to fly with no SAFE features would be a good next step. Once you have got that then try in varying conditions until you are able to handle it when it misbehaves without resorting to SAFE stuff. Then on to a low winger. This is a less expensive route! The DX6 transmitter may be all you will need for years. I'm still on my old DX6i and have no need to change it.
  5. I have ordered a plan and wood pack set for the 80" BE2e from Doolittle Media (Flying Scale Models) and look forward to putting a few new stains on the engine with that in due course! Thanks for your kind comments and suggestions.
  6. Thanks for the advice Jon, will do. Here's a couple of pics - it was in good condition when I bought it, but some exhaust stains externally and a bit of rust forming on the two front bearings.
  7. Yes the same bearings since the entry above in late 2014 - so 4 years ago, and no play that I can feel. I fly this model more than any other that I have, but don't get to the field every week - in bad weather I may not fly for a month or two. I find the puppeteer floats well and is very enjoyable to fly, but with this engine it'll shoot around a bit too. Great fun! I use Simply Bearings as they give a good choice of budget and more expensive makes and are at good prices. Free postage too at the moment unless you select other postage options. Even then, my last two orders arrived 2 days after ordering. Edited By GrahamWh on 12/01/2019 13:49:59
  8. I cleaned the above Laser 80 (which was made in 1999 judging from the 9 punched in the side of the mounting plate and originally sold to someone with the initials MW). I cleaned out the insides too and replaced the three bearings with stainless ones - the front two had begun to rust a little. I got it running on the bench today - it idles at 1800-1900 and gets up to 9600 rpm with a MA K series 14x6 prop on Optifuel 5%. I'll try it on a 15x6 following Jon's recommendation over the phone when I ordered a new prop nut and washer for it. Very pleased with it - I have worked on a few old ones with my brother, but this is the first I've owned myself. I particularly like the layout - you can change the main crankshaft bearings just by taking of the front section without affecting the timing or removing the head.
  9. In case it is of help to anyone thinking of replacing engine bearings with stainless steel ones, I can report that this engine is still running fine with the ones I fitted - no discernible play at all.
  10. Paul I have fitted an MA S2 series 14x6 to my ASP FS 61 AR and get 9,000 rpm on the ground with Optifuel 5%. (With an MA K series 14x6 it only gave about 8,500 and the throttle seemed a bit unresponsive above 2/3 in the air so probably a bit too much load). Only just started with this though so I don't know how it will be long term. My ASP FS 70 AR has been pulling around a puppeteer for 5 years or so with the K series 14x6 and goes very well - overpowered of course in that plane, but that's nice when you want a blast. Pete - do you know what prop and fuel he was using on the Magnatilla?     Edited By GrahamWh on 11/01/2019 21:54:32
  11. Apologies Roger - I hadn't noticed the D section in your wings, I was commenting on mine which are about 2" across!
  12. Really nice Sopwith triplane Roger. On my Bristol Scout with Solartex Linen you cannot see the ribs- good job too as I went and put a big fat D Section in the wings for more rigidity which would not look scale at all but makes them really good and stiff!
  13. Thank you very much Roger. It certainly would not be a good idea for me to get a load of Oratex antique to go with the Solartex linen that I have left over from the last project. That Oratex antique looks closer to Solartex natural.
  14. This thread makes little sense - has some been deleted?
  15. I think it's best to decide on your payment terms, maybe paypal, and stick to them. If they haven't got paypal, they can get it easily enough - everyone else manages it. If they fail to pay in the way you want, they can go somewhere else. End of. No playing around. They wouldn't be wanting to buy from you if you didn't have what they wanted, so why should you sell to them if they won't pay as you want. Business is 2 way. To make it easier, you can include in the advert the fact that you only accept paypal or what ever you are happy with, no exceptions.
  16. Wahay - in the club! I bought a second hand laser 80 today. Post-1992 as it has upright glow plug, but not the very latest as it has the Irvine carb and straight sided cylinder (but with polished rounded off vane edges). In a very well built and painted Flair Fokker DVII too!
  17. Richard at DB Sport and Scale has kindly replied to an email I sent and we now know the following - For IC power the pup will be aimed at 52-60 four strokes (it can be electric powered too). The cowl will be aluminium rather than plastic/fibreglass.. There is still a bit of work to do before they can finally confirm the flying weight and the selling price.
  18. Does anyone know how oratex cream compares with solartex linen or with oratex antique? Looks lighter that the antique in some pictures on line and close to solartex linen.
  19. Well guys thank you for your reflections. Its a shame the colours are not the same. Thanks for posting the pics Jim. Regarding Humbrol colours, I have tried to match some Humbrol enamel to solartex linen recently on my Bristol Scout to hide the linkage horns. I found that Humbrol linen was a greener shade than the solartex linen. Humbrol oak satin was closer, but too light. I ended up mixing about 2 parts oak satin with one of linen - still a bit greeny, and then a tiny drop of red and that about nailed it! A bit of a faff really. I did a bit of research on the interweb and found that batches of their paint may not always be consistent anyway!
  20. Does anyone know if solartex linen and oratex antique are the same colour - or near enough so that I could use one on the fuselage and the other on the wings for example without it being noticeable? I have some solartex linen left over but not enough for a new project and am thinking I may need to get oratex to make up the shortfall. I have scoured the webbernet but there seems to be no solartex in linen left. Thanks guys.
  21. The DBSportandScale site has started advertising a new Pup to add to their small electric 1/8 size and 1/4 scale size which will be ready hopefully in Jan 2019. It will have a 60" wing span, so will appeal to those who have been looking unsuccessfully for a Flair Puppeteer in stock anywhere as well as to those who want a more scale like model in the range. Now where's that spare OS 70 Surpass I had lying around... Edited By GrahamWh on 03/12/2018 20:10:43 Edited By GrahamWh on 03/12/2018 20:12:28 Edited By GrahamWh on 03/12/2018 20:13:03
