  1. Thought today was going well apart from my open warfare with a warranty company and nine hundred quid but thats another story, did the last bits on a new trainer type that is grossly overpowered, even remembered to remove the bind plug after setting up the electrics. Then without realising I caught the throttle stick in my tee shirt, motor went to full power and the result was lots and lots of confetti that used to be plans, An APC 9x5 at full belt with 450w behind it just chewed its way through everything for maybe just a second before I hit the stick back to closed, the one time I didnt bother removing the prop as I was readying it to go flying, it slashed through seven layers of paper, plastic document sleeves, and cardboard in that time. Just imagine if it had been fingres in the way, even a small motor can give you a right crack across the fingers but this one would have chopped them off.
  2. Thats one sad looking Mew Gull..........can it be fixed?........if not send it me and I will fix it, got the plans........
  3. Found that diamond hole saws will go through 1/4'' Birch ply no problems, tends to burn a little bit but by lifting the hole saw and clearing the dust it works fine, I use them mainly for popping access holes in bulkheads, lightening holes in sheet components and stuff like that. I didnt mean you should heat the saw up too hot, just play the flame over the edge to burn off resin which can then be wire brushed to get the cutting edge clean, they should be able to stand up to quite a bit of heat as they are made for cutting through ceramic tiles with no water cooling.
  4. One of those rogue sellers is Abeyerr who sells quite a few r/c items, his postal system is 'it gets there eventually' so beware this one, right now he is siting on 98% feedback and is frightened to death it will drop into the 97's because it affects his standing on the American market.
  5. If you want nice clean holes with no tearing even in the softest of Balsa and Depron buy a set of diamond edge hole saws used for cutting holes in tiles, they last for ever and are easily cleaned by soaking in thinners or just burn any resin build up with a torch then scratch brush them.
  6. 0For cooling ESC's pop into the local computer repair shop and ask if they have any old finned heat sinks, they usually have plenty of the things laying around, cut the shrink wrap away from over the heat sink plate and put a good dab of white heat sink paste onto it then a lump of the computer heat sink. Strap it down with a cable tie and your done.
  7. Some people are so dim they seem to think you need advice like that, perhaps it helps them get through the day if they think they have brought you down to their level of intellect.
  8. Chears folks, looking at the rear set wing it looks like a cross between an X=29 and a Klingon battle cruiser, I have never seen it come up on Ebay at any time so it must be a bit of a rare bird, I think £17.50 is a bit steep to say the least particularly as they were probably printed back in 1996 and costin g pennies !
  9. Anybody recognise this? its a1995/96 plans book but I dont know which magazine produced it, I am particularly interested in the canard at the top of t'page....
  10. The French lads come up with some of the weirdest ideas but they actually work, everything from flying grand pianos, Citroen 2CV's and god knows what else. I was toying wth a layout for a dragon fly simular to RLD's, I was thinking on a Ritz type wing with the upper wing forward swept and the lower mounted midships and swept aft, fin and rudder but no stab. May still give it a go but have a 3 metre glider to build first...
  11. Here you go......made from foam, mainly slices of blue foam and Depron, larger one (Fat Albert) is about 36'' span.little Miki is only 16'' span, if you want to see some real pecukliar stuff have a look at my friends on www.jivaro-models.org. Its a French site full of crazy ideas and stuff that really shouldnt fly but it does, scroll down the first page until you see a brown stingray with blue spots, thats the Interex 2012 blog.
  12. There was one idea I played with a while back for a biplane of simular layout to yours, no stabiliser, aileron control, rudder, with the lower wing set about midships with 2' negative incidence, upper wing with 3' positive. The idea being for the upper wing to supply lift and when it neared its optimum angle and started to lose lift the lower wing was just beginning to provide lift further aft to stop the thing stalling, with this balance between the two in theory it should be stable, never did have time to probe the idea far enough to see if it would work.
  13. What I have found in the past with some 'unusual' wing setups is downthrust lifts the nose, upthrust pushes the nose down, we had that problem with 'Propelorsaurus' which also had a high thrust line but from a pusher which complicated things somewhat. I like experimenting with strange setups, got one or two things in mind but have to build two 100'' span gliders first....
  14. If you use 1.5mm carbon rod for anything have a look at Ebay 270975171044 , just bought 20 lengths x 24'' x 1.5mm for a tenner, handy for repair work and control rods.
  15. I kmow we should support our local model shops and that they have a living to make but when they import identical merchandise at the same price or cheaper than I pay for stuff from China, then they slap anything up to 500% on top they are on a loser. For instance a small prop balancer, just a threaded rod witth two cones from China £2.10p and free P&P, on Ebay the same thing £5.95 and £1.90 P&P, I bought one from China, took a good look at it then in an hour had made two much more accurate versions on my lathe.
  16. What is the best thickness of acetate sheet for vac=forming canopies? I have plenty of 240 mic and 480 but not sure which would work better.
  17. I used to build these to commision mainly for the U.S market, collectors and museums, one or two did escape to Oz and one or two other places... This is the last of the many, stopped building now except for this one which is staying with me, health problems preclude long term commitments like taking on a commission that may take 1500 to 2000 hours to complete. This is a full admiralty board style model of the U.S frigate Confederacy 1778, there is still much to do as I havnt touched it in five years but it is now back out of mothballs and under survey to figure out where I left off.
  18. Just a passing thought but I think if model aircraft enthusiasts could see what they are missing out on they would be more inclined to take out a subscription, like making 'subscriber only' content available to all instead of adopting the slightly selfish attitude of 'if you aint paid for it you dont get it'. Personally I think with the present economic climate and what has become an essentials only existance for a lot of people you do whatever it takes to sell the goods.
  19. Just three of the many built over a 30 year span. Keltridge designed 6th rate of 24 guns. HMS Lyme 1740,24 gun 6th rate. HMS Agamemnon 64 gun third rate 1794
  20. I have only tried the stuff in the bronze coloured bottle, I know Impex do a whole range of craft glues even glitter filled glue if your that way inclined.., the beauty of a plastic bottle is you can have a fine nozzle or cut it shorter for a larger output if you want one, when the contents starts to run low you just turn the bottle upside down. getting the last dregs out of a jar is awkward and can tend to be messy, even the empty bottles can be recycled and used for other stuff like white spirit or whatever, to me the less waste we generate the better.
  21. Perhaps 5-Star could be persuaded to put Balsaloc and Coverloc in squeezy bottles with a small bore spout, unless you remember to put the lid on the jar between applying the stuff it is losing moisture. OK so you get a bit too much on your finger so what do you do? wipe it off on the edge of the jar so it runs down into the jar congealing as it goes, this is all waste=money and I think plastic bottles would work out cheaper than glass with a metal lid. The way I have found with the Impex stuff is to cut the fingers out of a latex glove and just use those on your finger to appy the glue, all you need do is apply a thin bead from the spout and just smear it along with your fingertip, couldnt be easier or cleaner in my view and it is actually faster with no clean up at the end.
  22. Hi BEB, it would be far more economical if they stuck Balsaloc in a plastic bottle with a nozzle, the amount of jars I have had to dump because it had turned to chewing gum in the bottom. This Impex stuff appears to be pretty good, I made sure to have the irn the same temp as for Balsaloc and ironed it down well, left it to cool and then tried to pull it off, you can peel it from one end to remove it but a straight pull just wouldnt move it. There is one seller on Ebay that lists the stuff at £3.60 post free, I have ordered another bottle of it so I have it in stock, thing is if you need wood glue you can use this stuff like normal PVA so it does two jobs for the price of one, Balsaloc is just too damned expensive to use for glueing wood.
