  1. Coarse pitch threads are for soft materials Fine pitch threads are for hard material. Generally everything was in BSW but on exotic materials BSF was generally used both have an inclusive thread angle of 55 deg. UNF & UNC is the American equivalent but with an inclusive thread angle of 60 deg. BA threads have an inclusive angle of 47.5 deg. Iso metric threads are inclusive angle of 60 deg. There is metric coarse or metric fine. Generally most iso metric threads are metric coarse. This is where I believe the old imperial system won. Model engines are cast in aluminium and would benefit from a coarse thread in the casting but unfortunately modern engines are metric resulting in more stripped threads.......in my opinion The crankshafts are generally hardened so that's why UNF thread is used over coarse ( bigger root diameter) but some engine manufactures use Metric fine because if they used a standard metric thread? This would compromise it's strength as possible fatigue could occur because of the smaller root diameter of the thread To buy spare M8 fine nut(s) are like Rocking Horse do doos......Where as 5/16 UNF nuts are easy to get hold of and are an 'off the shelve' item This is probably why UNF is favoured over metric fine I'm sure someone out there in modeling land will disagree with this post
  2. I'm afraid this thread has decended into exactly what BEB has highlighted in his opening post. This is the principal reason I refuse to join a club............ I just enjoy building and flying my creations whatever dicipline
  3. Didn't model enthusiasts once come under the auspicies of the Society of model aeronautical engineers (Smae) before the formation of the Bmfa. The basic problem BEB has highlighted is associated with snobbery......unfortunately this is prevelant in most walks of life. Why don't we just enjoy what we do whichever dicipline it is and embrace and learn off other diciplines that come under the modelling umbrella.......You never know.......you might learn something that can be used in your chosen field After all like it or not we're all model engineers in one form or another
  4. Completely agree. At the end of the day. Stick with what you know and works for you But there is one important factor in this which is.....generally the air the engine sucks in through the carb isn't filtered, so any contaminants can be injested and can damage the surface finish on any mating surface resulting in a shortened lifespan. Also more recently the bearing market has been swamped with counterfeit bearing. Again can't remember changing a bearing because it growls but I have replaced bearings because of crashes .   Edited By Owdlad on 20/04/2016 15:15:54
  5. Ah the good old fuel debate. In my considerable opinion the user falls into 2 catagories. A) Price driven B) Quality regardless of price........ My phylosophy is simple "Pay cheap pay twice" I have no wish to get into a which product is better debate only share my experiences concerning fuel and then draw your own conclusions. Byron fuel.......Absolutely loved it Coolpower. ......Again loved it with consistent engine runs and no carbon build up in the engine Southern model craft....... Wouldn't touch it Pro-synth........Never used it simply bacause of logistical issues Right that's that bit done with. My main fuel of choice for everyday running is Model Technics Formula Irvine. This fuel is a delight to use with consistent engine runs, consistently smooth throttle response from low to mid to high throttle. If there is any change in throttling I know the glow plug is on its way out. Recently because of availability I use Opti-Fuel. Switching over to this fuel has altered all my high & low needle settings. Also I can't seem to get that smooth transitional throttle response, furthermore since switching over to this fuel I've never suffered from as many dead sticks. By the way........ YES, I DO KNOW WHAT I'M DOING Just because a new kid on the block arrives? Never Dismiss a quality well established company that's produces quality fuels with years of experience. I'm Sticking with "Model Technics"
