  1. I'm keeping reasonably busy in my 'workshop' (spare bedroom), changing last year's models from electric to glow. My second attempt to join the modern age (the first was about 20 years ago) and go electric, but it doesn't do it for me. Hopefully, I'll have a good selection of powered models ready to fly once we can get out again. What I do miss is music - I have been playing in bands (bass guitar) for years, and am used to frequent gigs. I miss the company, the playing and the money! Last year I quit my main band as I was fed up with the driving (I live near Oxford, we rehearsed in Leicester, gigs in London, Yorkshire, Devon, etc. - even south Germany in 2019) and joined up with another playing the same music (Grateful Dead covers) locally. We had a good summer playing in fields around the city of Oxford, battery powered amplifiers and all appropriately distanced (one of the band members is a GP), but eventually the weather put a stop to that. Hopefully, we can resume sometime after Easter. At this time of the year, I usually have a full gig diary, at the moment I have two - both on the same weekend in August! One is a festival in Kent, the other is playing with a couple of friends at a wedding in Wiltshire. I hope the latter isn't cancelled as it's my daughter who is getting married!
  2. Posted by Dave Garrett 1 on 01/02/2021 18:48:08: Posted by john stones 1 Moderator on 31/01/2021 21:50:54: I'm alive n kicking then. What time does the turn come on tonight ? And who do we like from the Younger musicians/bands ? My faith in modern music was restored by Finish symphonic metal band Nightwish. Not that well known in the UK.They are led by the impressive Dutch Amazonian lady Floor Jansen. Brilliant live. Went to see them at Wembley a couple of years ago, expecting to be the oldest rocker In town. Fortunately, I did not look a bit out of place. Here one of my favourites **LINK** I joined a Nightwish tribute in Oxfordshire a few years ago purely because I used to live in the small town that Tarja Turunen had lived in. I fairly quickly realised that I didn't actually like the music, though, and soon left - apparently the keyboard player left on the same day!
  3. Mucking about with guitars is a disease - I'd have much more room for the important things in life if I'd never discovered music!
  4. Denis - I'm between town and country, living in an Oxfordshire village The nearest club is Witney, but they are all-electric due to restrictions at their flying site. I flew there a few times last year. I am also a member of the Oxford club, where I can fly IC but only at certain times. I can also fly IC near Swindon, but haven't had a chance because of the lockdown as yet. I've flown IC models for decades, and am too set in my ways to change - though I have tried, it just felt that there was something lacking.
  5. I partially agree with the subtitle to this thread - very few model shops around (I do have one half an hour away, but they don't do anything for aircraft). BUT - no I.C.? If no-one wants engines, then why are they all getting ridiculous bids on eBay? I've lost count of the number I've been watching that have attracted bids way beyond what I'd consider reasonable for a used engine bought sight unseen.
  6. Thanks, that's another for the list. Good colours on your Chipmunk, once mine's flight proven I might be tempted to change the camo for something more traditional.
  7. I have to keep my LiPos in the house, nowhere else for them, so am seriously thinking of getting rid of them as I mainly fly glow anyway. Four packs of 4s (used for 2-3 flights per pack), one 3s and two 5s (none used at all). All at storage charge and with XT60s. If anyone's interested, drop me a line and I'll give you the full details. Please delete if against the rules.
  8. Yeah, Finland was a good place to fly - here is a picture of myself (in the red & black overalls) and my friend Sami on lake Lappalanjärvi. The wooden structure behind us is part of docking for boats. Edited By Dave S. on 24/01/2021 12:01:42
  9. I used to live in Finland, we flew our models from frozen lakes in the winter. We'd drive out onto the ice and fly using either wheels or skis, the snow covering the ice was usually strong enough to prevent the wheels digging in, at least on take off. Lakes are lovely and flat, but we needed floats to fly there in the summer!
  10. I don't know about the models used in the film (though I am sure I ave read an article about them in a model magazine at some time in the past) but I do have a very clear memory of sitting on the village green at East Dean with my mum & dad, drinking a bottle of coke and eating packet of crisps from the Tiger Inn and watching a Spitfire and 'Me 109' circling round and round a helicopter. My dad filmed it with his home ciné camera, I might even have the film somewhere. I would have been 11 years old at the time, same year I started flying models.
  11. I always enjoyed BW's columns - interesting, entertaining and educational without being patronising. I've known (and worked with) quite a few Aussies over the years, and they have always been good people and easy to get along with. There was one exception - he used to be manager at the local pub, but was run out of town (well, village) when it was discovered how much he'd been stealing over the years. But he was the odd one out. Every other Australian I have known has been a pleasure to meet, and I am sure that if I'd had the opportunity to meet Brian, he would have been as well.
  12. Lots of good ideas coming through, thank you everyone who has contributed so far - any more ideas - please keep them coming, all giving me food for thought.
  13. I've built and flown at least a dozen Acrowots (from the kit) and the best engine all round was the OS 70 Surpass, in my opinion. I have an ARTF Acrowot upstairs and have just bought a Saito 82 to try out in it. I'l let you know how it goes.
  14. Must have been looking in the wrong places - I couldn't find anywhere that would deliver fuel. I'll have a look at the places suggested, thank you. The smell of petrol is a good point, I have to keep my models in the house these days and petrol does reek a bit...
  15. Thank you, Jon, your advice is greatly appreciated. I don't like over-powered scale models, though they are less likely to cause a problem than an underpowered one, in my experience. One reason I am biased towards petrol for this model is the cost, but more importantly, the availability of fuel. I used to be able to buy fuel from my local model shop, but that closed a few years ago, so now I am depending on there being some shows this year or driving quite a distance to get fuel. I do prefer the sound of a four stroke, but the lower revving petrol engines with a decent silencer aren't too bad in my opinion - my Beaver didn't have that big radial sound (obviously) but it didn't sound too much like a flying chainsaw either. Thanks again, all advice and opinions welcome.
  16. Posted by Anthony Scott 2 on 21/01/2021 11:39:57: I fly my SG Chipmunk from a grass strip. It is powered by an SC 120 4 stroke which is more than sufficient power. Thank you, that's useful information. I reckon an OS GT22 should be on a par with an SC 120 4 stroke. I have now removed the model from the box, looks very well built and covered (I'll send my daughter round to tell them if it's not as she lives in the same city as Seagull at the moment!). Bit of a struggle to fit the wings & fuselage into my very crowded modelling room as it has a desk, a wall-length workbench with Bandsaw, pillar drill & bench vice, four assorted models (not including the Chipmunk) plus a shelf full of kits, half a dozen bass guitars, bass amp and speaker and another shelf with a couple of hundred CDs…and somehow, I have to get in there and make things!
  17. That is interesting - last Laser engine I had was a 75 in an Acrowot sometime in the late 80s. The 180 glow looks idea, but I would rather go with a petrol if possible. Good suggestion, thank you. Certainly not something I had considered. Let's see what else pops up!
  18. Hi all, just taken delivery of an 80" Seagull Chipmunk and intend to get it put together soon - just need to finish the Wot 4 re-fit and Acrowot currently on the bench. I would like to use a petrol engine for this - but not sure which one. The last (and only previous) model of this size I have had was a DHC 2 Beaver which I flew with an MVVS 26 petrol turning an 18x6 prop - it flew well but definitely wasn't over powered, so the suggestion in the destructions for the Chipmunk for a 20cc petrol strike me as potentially underpowered (thinking of safe take-offs from grass rather than aerobatics). Would the OS GT33 fit and be a good match? It is only a little more expensive than the GT22. It's nearly 15 years since I last flew petrol, so the market has changed and I am not familiar with it. Any suggestions on engine choice would be most welcome, though it has to be petrol - not glow at this size and most definitely not electric! Thanks in advance.
