Good lord. That has to be worst one i have ever seen. Its almost all brass!

I rebuilt a few with ASP chrome brass liners and they went well after repairs. Shame the old nickel plating cant be honed off and the thing re chromed in the garden. There are videos online on how to do it. Might be a fun project

Yes, this one was rebuilt using ASP spare parts.

Turned out to be a great engine.

An old S8R Kev. It was working fine on the ground and everything moving as it should. As soon as I took off (should have been gyro off) I was into a fight with it. The Viper didn't want to climb and was very sluggish in response to the controls, just like it was in Safe mode. Turns were gigantic including having to fly behind me (!!!). Another peculiar thing was that the retract switch had reversed itself, normally, and this is how I had it configured, switch forward for U/C down, switch back for up but after take off I flicked the switch and the legs stayed down, switched it the other way and legs up. I flicked the gyro switch between the modes as I just didn't have enough elevator authority and put the rates switch on high which resulted in massive over controlling on the ailerons. By this time (4 mins into bucking bronco and barely controlled flight) I decided to land. Fighting it all the way down I came in a bit hot, touched down (1 leg) and decided to go round again at which point it decided to tip stall but I then made one of the best saves and managed to recover it before coming in again and landing it on the grass. It was very nearly a bin bag job!

Back in the pits I discovered that I had little to no elevator movement so rest the gyro (from the Tx) and regained full movement but couldn't access the gyro setup (Tx) to turn it off. At that point I decided that I needed to replace the Rx with an X8R which is what I did for today's flight and no problem it flew like it was on rails. I have ordered a new S10R from T9 which arrived today so will fit that before Saturday but, tbh, despite todays very strong cross winds I didn't really miss not having a gyro!

Sounds like quite the f(r)lite!, pleased it came home in one peace.

My new FMS Viper, had its maiden flight on Tuesday which nearly ended in tears (faulty gyro RX) flew again today with a new RX, brilliant despite the very cold and strong NE winds.

Mine's the one in the foreground!

How faulty was the RX Ron?

Programming or hardware, and which RX?

in a few weeks time we will be back in Malta....first visit since 2019 due to you know what.....expect to see a few changes...

    ken anderson...ne...1.......Med dept.

We went back last September. A lot, and I mean a lot has changed. So much so that we are not returning this year. Our regular Hotel has not changed, but many of the restaurants and bars have not come through you know what well. There was a couple we really enjoyed in Valletta, but they appear to have changed hands and the ambiance was not good.

Where are you staying this time @ken anderson.?

So this year we are doing our other favourite holiday. Another cruise. We shall be in Monaco for the wife`s 60th birthday. I have told her that if I save really really hard I may be able to buy her a cup of tea whilst we are there.

Further extensive test flying has brought to light an interesting characteristic with this model. I was testing out the glide performance but decided to try it inverted, wow, the rate of descent was much less than the right way up and it was very controllable right down to the stall which was benign, with a wing rock and sink. So I now have an idea of how I will fly in the ‘Viagra Challenge’.

    Thanks @Ron Gray😆

    I shan`t tell if you don`t.

  6. I have been flying Frsky since 2012.

In that time I have never had an issue that I can put down to the hardware!

Started off with a DX7 that I modified improved with a hack module.

Then a DX9 the early one not the plus model.

    Then 3 Horus X12S and now a Tandem X20.

Never have I had one "unbind" on me.

The new ETHOS OS is one of the easiest to program that I have come across. There are plenty of very good utube video`s out there.

No idea what part of the world you are from Sam, but if I were you I would find another model shop and a club where training is FREE.

There is a thread about the X20 HERE.

Flying update, I flew it on Monday ( @Kevin Fairgrievehas some photos) and can confirm that it flies pretty well with a very wide flight envelope and a very benign stall. I’ve got to play around with the control throws / C of G as it needs a lot of persuasion to spin but all other manoeuvres are performed with ease. I’ve got to rethink one of the rounds of my ‘Wacky Races’, the ‘Viagra Challenge’ as with a 10 secs motor run the model disappears vertically! 5 secs will be more than enough.

    Hanky Planky in flight!

Due to its small size and wide speed range, it is not easy to photograph.
