all moving tail help required
Terry Whiting replied to Tim Mackey's topic in Building from Traditional Kits and Plans
Nice bit of lathe work Tmbo, and a good tidy up. -
Scruffy, I think.... Tony Nijhuis reviewed the build of his Lanc in RCM&E some 6-7 years back. Try and source a back number. Have you any instructions on the build other than what is given on the plan? To be quite honest this is not a 'First Time' build . I would advise you put the project on hold, and hone your building skills on a trainer, after all that will be your first requirement to become airborne, but if you are determined to continue, then keep the questions coming. It is so easy to build yourself OUT of a model.

all moving tail help required
Terry Whiting replied to Tim Mackey's topic in Building from Traditional Kits and Plans
I was going to suggest a simula set up to that of Andy, but using brass tube only. Cut the rod central, find a peice of tube which is a sliding fit over the rod, about 20mm should be sufficient, silver solder a brass horn to the tube, slide the finished item onto one half of the rod, then slide the tube back over the other half, centraise and soft solder in position. -
Continuing from what Eric stated, there was next to no colour in their flying gear...... A well used ' Irvin' didn't stay pristine for very long......dirt.....oil....grass stains .

Do modellers really need this, or is this another commercial gizmo being forced into our hobby. Has anyone thought of potential dangerours uses the system offers in the wrong hands. What has been developed here is a Radio Controled Vidio assisted Guidance System, but it sound much nicer to call it First Person Viewing (FVP) which is really nondescript. I can not understand the CAA giving this the green light as there is currently a proposal to alter the NAO to make in flight data gathering subject to CAA permission. Quote: It is proposed that the Air Navigation Order to be amended to require the operator of an Unmanned Aircraft System with a vihicle component mass not exceeding 20kg to obtain CAA permission before flying if the aircraft is equipped to undertake any form of surveillance or data aquisition.

ESC and Battery connections
Terry Whiting replied to Terry Whiting's topic in General Electric Flight Chat
Peter Thank you, I think I will leave well alone, as my knowledge in electronics is limited to the extreme. My Lanc will go under the knife. Thanks again you guys for your help. -

Thanks. It would be nice if spikes could be recorded whilest testing. -
2.4 GHz tranny black ribbon
Terry Whiting replied to Terry Whiting's topic in General Radio Discussion
I should think most "well run" Clubs today operate a peg board system, either PEG ON or PEG OFF, As Timbo stated at the BMFA Nats, and I witnessed at Wings & Wheels , pilots were flying without pennants. These are "B" cert display flyers, now these guys are safety conscious, if they can see there is no benefit in aerial appendages, so should the BMFA. When flying a turbine model, the last thing you want is to be momentary distracted by a windmilling pennant. -
ESC and Battery connections

Timbo thanks to you also. I think before I perform a tracheotomy on the paper conduits I will make up a bench test piece. Any idea what sympton I should look for, or would it be 'goodnight ESC?' I understand your usual disclaimer ..... -
ESC and Battery connections
Terry Whiting replied to Terry Whiting's topic in General Electric Flight Chat
Thanks Peter for your help. I would rather be safe than sorry, so in my case it would have to be surgery, cheers Terry. -
Timbo, can you help A few years back when I first came into electric, I was told never extend the leads between battery and the ESC, and never have done, but. is this a real issue today? as I have heard of some multi models with their ESC's in the motor nacelles. My reason for asking is I would like to go brushless in my Tony Nijhuis Lanc, but my paper conduits in the two root wing bays will not take 6 wires without surgery.

2.4 GHz tranny black ribbon
Terry Whiting replied to Terry Whiting's topic in General Radio Discussion
The Club I belong run a peg on system, and a transmitter pound. All the pegs have the members name and frequency No....For 2.4GHz we use named 'Black' pegs The only reason we use pegs for 2.4 GHz is because we have a limited number of powerd models airborne at any one time. Aerial pennants are not required. As youself I visited a club, this one was holding an electric flight open day. On arrival I was asked if I was participating in the flying, if so please hand my transmitter in at the transmitter pound tent. At the tent I handed my transmitter to the pound official, "What's this" he snapped, "my transmitter" says I, " I know it's a transmitter, wheres your b****** black ribbon" I Another flyer offered a ribbon but I declined his kind offer, as I was going to give that pedantic pillock the benefit. Why do we need pennants if we operate a peg system. The peg boards are of today, pennants are a left over relic of past years. -
Can someone clarify please. Is it a BMFA ruling that a 2.4 GHz transmitter should have a Black Ribbon afixed to the aerial, if so why?

Cant find kits.
Terry Whiting replied to Craig Spence's topic in Building from Traditional Kits and Plans
Craig, Last year I obtained from Sussex Model Centre a Tony Nijhuis Trainer 40, I built it for my grandson. Very nice model, All CNC cut. Slec were also doing a plan and parts pack I made it as a tail dragger. It was a good build, and the slightly tapered 72" wing makes it look different from all the 'clone' trainers one sees. -
Prop direction on a twin P-38
Terry Whiting replied to David Ashby - Moderator's topic in All Things Model Flying
Counter rotation has to be a plus, but I have never found multi engined (I/C) or electric models a problem with torque once airborne. -

I see RCMdirect has advertised Lithium Iron Phosphate cells since March in three different sizes 6.4v..........9.6v..........12.8v, (LiFePO4 A123), but at the moment OOS. These I was lead to understand were the latest , a spin-off of hybrid car technology.

Louis, sorry about the "r" a slip of the finger.....Checked out the E Flite website to see what this Deuces Wild was all about, some model, and there was me thinking it was a pusher. Checked the spec, it's certainly no light weight for a 62" span (9.2--10.5lb). I think you will have problems sourcing 12X8 reverse rotation/ counter rotation props, I see BRC only go as far as 9X5 and they are 3 bladed. Best of luck with your search.
-
Eric , and Louise, I stand corrected. I did not read the complete thread, very sorry. I thought it was just a 12X8 pusher prop that was reqired assuming it a single motor pusher model............. , and there was I thinking I was being helpful !
-
Louis,. I stated looking from the REAR of the model put the prop on backwards, which means you are looking at the BACK of the prop from the rear of the model.............From the front of the model the prop should be facing yourself. Now change two wires going to the motor to make it run as a conventional tractor prop. Hey presto you have a pusher.
-
Louis, This is an advantages of brushless motors, you do not have to purchase pusher props, because the motor can perform exactly the same clockwise or anticlockwise, as it's commander is the ESC.
-
Louis, Why not use a tractor prop...........Looking from the REAR of your model put the tractor prop on backwards, now change over two wires from the ESC to your motor which reverses rotation, and your tractor prop becomes a pusher..
