Uno-Wot build advice

Hi all,

New member here, just asking for some advice!

About 10 years ago, I bought a Uno Wot kit - I made pretty reasonable progress up to a point, but then priorities changed and I ended up with an expensive RC car habit instead! The cars don't see much action any more as the building aspect was always the thing that appealed the most - and unfortunately there's not enough of that with the cars.

I'm determined to finish it and get in the air - but after being through 10 years of storage and through three house moves it's looking a bit worse for wear!

From what I can tell, the fuselage is mostly complete - but it's a bit untidy. The wings have only had the leading and trailing edges glued on.

Everything looks pretty complete, and it looks pretty straight (my younger self hadn't done as bad a job as I'd feared!), though a couple of things have suffered - such as the tail feathers (which I'm tempted to replace as they don't look overly tidily put together), and the panelling on the wings has split along the grain - though the veneer hasn't actually lifted as far as I can tell.

A couple of things have unfortunately escaped over the years, most notably the plans/instructions!

Does anyone have any that they could scan and email to me?

Also, the bits for the UC seem to be missing (struts and clamps), as is the wherewithall for joining the wing halves.

Has anyone built one of these? What are they like to fly?

I was recently given a lovely looking laser-cut parkflyer kit (Stevens Aero Diddlebug) - which I'm going to put together before I have another crack at the Uno Wot as it seems like it should be easier to complete a new project than re-start an old one.

I live near Stroud, in Gloucestershire - there are a fair few model flying clubs around so I'll try to get it finished for the spring and (finally!) get the plane off the ground.

At the moment I'm gathering all the materials I'll need to get stuck in to the project - so far I'm planning to buy:

- Scalpel/Razor saw
- Glues (a couple of different CAs, and some white glue)
- Sanding blocks etc.

Anything else I should look for? I've got a dremel which I'm sure will come in handy!

Any suggestions on the would be greatly appreciated

Hi Tom...Yes the Uno wot flies very well, i'm just converting mine to electric..can't promise but i'll look and see if i still have the instructions (there are no plans). For the undercarriage try Chris Foss for spares and Deluxe Materials do a wing joining kit. Sadly the veneers on these do crack and split. If it still secure i would use a light weight filler and sand smooth.

Hope this helps

I built one this year and do have the instructions kicking around if Andrew can't locate them.
It's a great flier, glides very well, which can make landing in a stiff breeze fun!
Something worth doing is reinforcing around the ply undercarriage plate with 3/8" triangular hardwood, it will pull out after a hard landing otherwise.

Had a good look at the kit - looks pretty good, but some of the glue joins aren't as solid as I'd like them to be - and the fuse looks a bit twisted? I built it with balsa cement, which I suppose might not have aged that well. I'll take the thick sheeting off to have a better look at the innards of the fuse and go from there.

I was about 14 when I started it I think - I'm not 100% confident in the build really. I'll pick it up at the end of the week and have a proper look

Thanks for the responses so far!

Andrew - That's great to know! I actually found all the UC bits, which is a nice surprise. It looks like most of the bits are there. As I said, the veneers look pretty secure, so I'll get some filler on there and have a bit of a sort out.

Paul - There're a lot of clubs round here - I'll make sure I do that! The last thing I want to do is explosively disassemble something that's taken me all these years to (hopefully!) finish...

Martin - Very kind. Out of interest, is yours the 3ch or 4ch version? I'll brace the UC plate like you suggest.

Tom,

I heartily agree with the suggestion to reinforce the landing gear mounting. This was the only advice I got from a similar question a couple of years ago.

I also recommend that you join a club and get an instructor to show you how to fly.

I built mine to train on and so far the landing gear is intact, so draw your own conclusions from that.

Best of luck with your Uno.

I'll be sure to do that, Geoff.

I think I'll do some more building, then when the weather gets a bit better I'll head over to one of the local clubs and make some contacts, get the plane checked over as it nears completion etc.

Will certainly be getting a someone to teach me how to fly the thing. I'll be getting a lot more practice at building if I don't!

Can't wait for the glue and odds and ends to arrive. Anyone got any leads with the instructions?

No rush - my shiny new scalpel blades and shiny new glue (wait, what?) still haven't arrived...

Thanks Martin.

As I said, mine's the 3ch one. Unfortunately the wings + veneer seem to have suffered somewhat in their long hibernation, so I'm wondering about biting the bullet and bagging a 4ch wing.

I'll give Mr. Foss a ring and see what the damage would be.

Without wanting to sound like a broken record, anyone got any updates on these 'ere instructions?

Tom,
Good luck with the build, hope you manage to get the 4 ch wing. I built one about 7 years ago when I first got back into flying, the build is pretty easy, i converted mine to electric using the recommendations on Chris Foss's website. Flys really well nice and stable and, for me was a great lead into a WOT4.

Hi Tom....Instructions in the post 1st class and enjoy your build. As others have said it probably is worth getting an aileron wing as it makes it a super sports model.

Thanks Andrew, the instructions turned up on Friday! I really appreciate you doing that.

Had a chat with Mr. Foss - he recommended the aileron wing too as I'm learning to fly at a club.

I think I'm going to pick up a Twinstar to get some hours in while I finish the Uno Wot, and build it with the reduced dihedral aileron wing - hopefully the Twinstar would be easier to fix if it comes to grief in the early stages and the Wot will keep me entertained for longer than it would with the 3ch setup.

Thinking of building this one as an electric, too, that seems to be the done thing...

Can't get over how much cheaper brushless gear has got since I last looked a couple of years back. Craziness!

Tom...You're very welcome..I built mine with almost no dihedral and it flew fine..Sorry i can't help much with the electric conversion as mine is still at the planning stage but please post your set up when you get there as i may follow you..

I think that sounds like a plan.

I'm going to follow the guidelines on the Chris Foss site, but I'll probably go with some cheapo electronics from HK, shooting for somewhere in the region of 300-350W with a decent suitable on 3S 3300 pack.

Maybe this one? The aileron wing sounds like a definite plan too - I'll save ye olde Irvine .25 for a Sig Kobra maybe

Hi Tom...Please keep us updated on how you get on...a build thread maybe?....Mine used to fly on an Irvine .39 and wasn't over powered so thinking i might go XYH/EMP 4250 with a 60amp esc and a 4s 4000mah and start with a 12x8 prop ....see where i go from there.

I've had mine for years. Wore out two engines on it, a Super Tigre 34 and a Blue Bird 32, which gave sterling service until the con-rod went. Not flown it for a while, but now has a FX25 in it.

I did buy it on a Friday, and built it in two days, flew on the Sunday afternoon.

Sounds like a monster, Andrew! I did think 350W seemed a bit light on the Chris Foss site - I'll see how the Twinstar flies (went for ond in the end - going to use a pair of 150W motors) and go from there to figure out what power-to-weight ratio starts to get scary.

Nice looking plane there, Paul. I'm going to do mine white as well - though I'm tempted to copy your idea of doing the tail in another colour! How much dihedral have you built into that wing? It looks quite flat. You built yours in two days? That's about 1600 times faster than me :D

David - how did it fly on that engine? Sounds like quite an interesting combo...

I'll start a build thread when I get back to the building - been quite busy lately, but I'll get some wood over the weekend and get cracking. I'd like to have it done by easter.

Certainly a lot of testimonials here - sounds like it should be a good'un.

I left the wing with no dihedral. At the time, I wanted an aerobatic plane, as I didn't have many aerobatic jobs then. Does go well, and very sharp on the controls, but one time I did a climb to speck in the sky, shut the engine down and just using rudder/minimal controls did a 45 min glide flight. Those wings are very efficient!
