Kelly
Made a start tonight on the P-40 Went through all the bits and found some wrinkles on the wing tips, sorted them out with the iron, apart from the wrinkles the build quality and covering is very good. Wing tip wrinkle Sorted more soon
Peter Ford
What was your first engine for 30 years? Nice blog by the way
Kelly
Hi PeterSorry for the late reply trouble and strife on the home front , SC 46 fitted to my Boomerang (not flown yet). The B-25 looks good , all the electrickery talk between you and Timbo has given me a headache..I must gen up on the electrical side of things.Cheers Kelvin
Kelly
Well started the P-40 tonight .Following the instuctions, first job is to join the two wing panelsWing joinerCentre line markedLeadin edge wing retaining dowels.Dowels glued in place with epoxy. Dry run to test how well the wings fit together, wing joiner a nice tight fit with no gaps between the root ribs. The slight gap is because the wings are not supported whilst taking the picture.Bit late to epoxy up tonight more tommorrow.I know all this is a bit obvious, but I hope people who are new to the hobby will find this blog useful and realise the ARTF still needs quite a bit or work and care to achieve a good flying model .Kelvin. Kelly
Joining of the wing halves.Fitting the wing joiner using pins to keep it nice and true.Plenty of 30 minute epoxy on the wing joiner and both the root wing ribs/cavity.This is the fun and messy part as the epoxy oozes out of the join like something out of a 50's si-fi B movie. I used a small clamp, the wing dowels and pair of bolts fitted in the wing bolt holes with rubber bands looped round to help in keeping the the wing true as the epoxy cures.and a few strips of masking tape.Cleaned off the excess epoxy with paper towel and rubbing alcohol, horrible job. David Ashby - Moderator
The Saito should pull her round no problem Kelvin. I found my Saito 100 in the H9 Spit' needed a good 5-6 tanks of running-in mind.....
Arthur Chilvers
Hi Kevin,Re-gluing wing halves together.Try putting masking tape on the surfaces to be glued and joined.Smear Vaseline on the wing surfaces where the overspill will be.Remove the masking tape and apply the glue.Fit the two wing halves together and support as you wish. When dry the excess glue should now come off without any trace on the finished surfaces.Works for me Kevin.Regards,Arthur
Kelly
Hi David,Thanks for the info, good review on the Saito125 in a rival magazine. Regards running in what oil would you recommend to prep the engine before first running?Hi Arthur,Will give it a go when fitting the tailplane, cheers.Fitted the wing bolt plate.Drilled the holes for the bolts.I use a low watt soldering iron to remove the covering prior to glueing the plate. This prevents damage when using a knife to the wood underneath possibly weakening the structure.Next came the blind nuts for the wing bolts, I used a wing bolt with oversize nuts for packing and a washer to pull the nuts in place .Fusalege with wings attached.Sorry about the double image, camera on the wrong setting . David Ashby - Moderator
Good o' Kelvin. It's an unusual model but I always like the old P-40. BTW, have you flown the ME109 yet?
Kelly
Hi David,No not yet. Have you seen the two failed launches of the 109 on youtube, I really felt sorry for the guy .http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QaGDjl3bo00 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOihtGzsvq8&feature=related
Kelly
Fitted the belly pan tonight. This covers the wing join nicely and hides the epoxy overspill .
David Ashby - Moderator
Kelvin - re the ME109 - something not quite right there, ......first launch it look underpowered and the second looked like a balance issue?
Kelly
Hi David,I agree, wonder what he was saying to his friend . Looks like he gave up,no more videos since.
Kelly
Fitting the horizontal tailplane.Test fit ,mark with a felt tip pen.Remove the covering top and bottom ( I use a low watt soldering iron).Apply epoxy to the exposed area top and bottom.Elevator joiner in place .Slide the tailplane back into position, check the fit and the alignment.Strips of tape are to prevent any epoxy finger marks, made quite a neat job this time.Apologies for the slow progress, build time is limited at the moment (late night only)
Kelly
Fitting the vertical stabilizer. Remove tha covering.Epoxy into place. Check the fin is at 90 degrees to the stabilizer.
David Ashby - Moderator
Good stuff, what do you think of the quality of the kit so far Kelvin?
Kelly
Hi David,The build quality is in my opinion is excellent. The wings fitted together perfect .The tail is spot on,no need for sanding etc to get it all squared up.May pin the control surface hinges just to make sure. The covering is wrinkle free, apart from the wing tips. It is well stuck down on the leading edges of the wings and very neat .The only thing not very good is me with my epoxy fingers and cyno runs aaaargh .Elevators and rudder next on the to do list. David Ashby - Moderator
Yes glue runs can be lethal on dark covering
Kelly
Attaching the elevator and rudder.Pins are used to centre the hinges. The two halves of the elevator are joined with a wire joiner using epoxy to glue into position. The hinges are secured with thin CAThe tailwheel is fixed into the rudder with epoxy. The rudder is attached using thin CA .The tailwheel bracket is fixed into place with two screws.Debonder will remove bad CA runs without marking the finish on the covering.Nail varnish remover will work along with the debonder to leave the surface nice and shiny .Been a bit messy with this mode l. Kelly
Retract servo and linkage installation. The mechanical retracts are already fitted in the wings all that is needed is to install the retract servo and connect the linkages.Servo tray bay in the wing centre section The servo bay needed a bit of dremelling to remove the epoxy overspill. The mounts straddle the centre section rib and rest flush to the wing sheeting on the inside of the wingServo tray glued to the mounts with epoxy.Servo tray in place.Servo arm is drilled out to accept the quick connectors. The control wires are trimmed and passed through the quick connectors .3mm set screws with a little thread lock are used to secure the retract linkagesServo in place with the retract control wires in place.Wheels are fitted with wheel collers and thread locked grub screws Wheels fitted.Short video of retacts in operation.[/p][p]They rotate through 90 degrees as per the full size P-40 .[/p
