Hi Paul,

It does look good , not quite scale size/shape and a bit further forward than on the full size P-40.

Been flying a Seagull 40 since my Boomerang shed its wings .

I now feel confident in flying the P-40, so just the plumbing, Rx, onboard glow and retract battery to fit and  its chocks away (I hope).

I hope to do a little video of the engine running .

I have also pinned the control surfaces ,belt and braces job !!

So apart from final balencing,correct  contol surface throws and running in of the Saito tis finished.

Hi, I built one of these last weekend,

No problems with the build other then the wrinkles in the covering, and the cowl not lining up correctly.

I powered it with a RCV 91, and test flew it yesterday.

It flies brilliant. Very stable, good ground handling, and flies big circuits like the real thing. Just 2 clicks of down trim required to fly hands off.

Very easy machine to fly.

gear has held up so far.

Beware of the landing, with no flaps it comes in very fast and floats on for ever, you need a long landing strip, or come in very low and slow without stalling it.

Good luck on the maiden, though you will not need it.

Hi Kelvin.

I fly from tarmac, 200 metres of it, and it uses a lot of it on landing.

Once I get used to the low speed handling of the plane, then I can probably come in m,uch much slower, but at the moment, better safe then sorry.

I thing i recommend, if you are not already doing it, is to fit a seperate retract battery. these units really do draw a lot of current, even using them a couple of times lowers the battery voltage enough for them to not operate properly.

been flying it for a couple of weeks now with the RCV 91, and love it.

Still finding it so easy to fly, if you can fly a trainer you will have no problems with this.\

Hi Kelvin

I started to fit my scale exhaust today.  I used the site which you recommended, but I have a few questions.

When I trial fit the exhaust  to the engine it's a bit of a tight fit until youe screw the exhaust in.  Did you have this?

Also I trimmed the engine mounts as per the article but I am finding that I also have to trim the sides down a bit.  One side more than the other. This is addtional to the trim required at the front of the mounts. Was this the same for you?

Hi Dean

Yes you have to trim like that ,take a little bit of at a time till it fits, it is a bit fiddly.

 I screwed the exhaust to the engine first leaving the  mounting bolts very loose then tighten them like you would the nuts on a car wheel. The exhaust is not a precision fit but close enough.

Do not forget to use some high temp locktite or similar on the engine to exhaust bolt .

You may also find the exhaust stubs stick out more on one side due to the side thrust built into the fire wall.I have left mine as it is for now,but you could place a couple of washers between the mount and firewall to sttraighten up the engine, I would leave it as it is, side thrust is there for a very good reason

The cowl is also hard to line up  not to worry as it will look fine in the air.

I am using a Saito 125 so Ihave replaced the 14oz tank with a 20oz one

Hope to run the engine in over Christmas and to try flying it off my flying field .

Update .

 Decided it was time to run the engine in . Sounds really nice,ran a full tank through. Went to start the motor for a second run and this happened

The U/C leg snapped clean off while I was flicking the prop,I could not believe my eyes.

If this had  happened during the first flight it could have totalled the model.

I am really concerned as to the rest of the structure.

This is a serious defect. not even stong enough to support the model when it is static???

 First the Boomerang and now the P-40, I do not know if I should continue in this hobby,ARTF is the only way I can get airborne, I have no time or space to build.

I am going to have a think about this one.

 I'm not surprised you're concerned!  I can only say that in two years flying with many (VERY ) heavy landings thanks to my limited skill, I've had no issues at all with the U/C other than having to bend the legs back every couple of flights.  To have a wire break like this it must have been faulty to start with.  Have you contacted Horizon Hobby (Hangar 9 UK importers/agents) to see what they have to say?

 Unortunately I lost my P40 a few weeks ago when I lost control of it in roll (it just kept dropping it's left wing uncontrollably) I suspect through some form of radio interference.  When I recovered the airframe I couldn't find any mechanical fault, although the firewall was impossible to analyse as it was in about a million pieces!!  Engine OK though apart from a broken inlet manifold.  I rate the aircraft high enough that I am probably going to replace it like for like - unless I go for the Corsair from the same range of course!

Hi again Martyn,

Would you consider selling the U/C units out of your P-40 to me ?  yours are up to the job and   I would like to fly it in the near future.

My local model shop does not keep spares and I have no tools or workbench to make  some out of wire. 

I hope to resolve the matter with Horizon with a new set ,but I am not too hopeful.

Hi Kelvin,

Thanks for your advice.  I have trimmed the mounts etc but I am finding that the cowl is very difficult to fit.  I have cut away the areas where the exhaust stacks will stick out, but it's still hard to fit the cowl.

 Did you find this?  Mind you the P40 cowl does look like it has more room.

Hi Dean,

Yes its a bit of a fiddle to get it just right,I think it is because the cowls are quite flexible in a wobbly sort of way.

Mine is not spot on at one side, if you look at the review P-40 the cowl on that is not  spot on .

I would not worry too much for once in the air it is hard to see any slight defects.

I have to sort my broken U/C out tomorrow.

Hi Kelvin,

Managed to finally fit my exhaust and cowl. As you said it's a bit of a fiddle but glad it's on. From what I can tell the P40 seems to have a larger cowl.

Thanks again for your help on this. I need to sort my landing gear also as I am not confident in them. It seems like a common theme with Hangar 9 models
