Nick Burroughs
I have some 5mm carbon rod to use as a pushrod. How do I get a clevis to fit to the rod. I have seen Thunder Tiger Readys with carbon push rods and plastic adaptors to take threaded clevis ends. Anyone know where I can get any? John Cole
5 mm rod is pretty heavy-duty. The ads I found are for devices fitting much smaller-diameter rod or for somewhat smaller-diamenter tube. The cf rod would glue into a metal tube, and the cf tube would have a metal threaded section screw/glue into it.
Steve Houghton 1
I attached some wire to carbon rod of about 2mm dia by glueing it on with CA and putting shrink tube over the top. Worked a treat . Steve A470Soaring.blogspot.com
brfc7
As above, I glue a wire Z bend to the carbon rod with CA (give the rod a little sanding for glue to stick) and then wrap thread tightly around both the wire and rod and CA again the whole piece and finish off with a bit of heat shrink baz Edited By brfc7 on 06/12/2012 21:13:
Guest
I use 1/8th carbon tube - the hole being about the same size as the threaded wire for quicklinks. Screw in gently to avoid straining the carbon if if is a tight fit, then cyano which not only fixes the wire in but also penetrates the carbon fibres and glues them together at the ends of the tube. If the rod is a long one, then I fit a support bracket about 1/2 way along - a balsa strip with a slightly enlarged 1/8th hole glued across fuselage. john
Nick Burroughs
Thanks for the info guys. I also want to replace the cf wing struts on a Piper Cub which had 5mm cf rods as struts so although the ideas received will be ok for pushrods the joining methods suggested would not be strong enough.
