Glen
hi all hope you can help me i am building my very first balsa model kit the sig kavalier The design is for ic engine but I want to change to electric i have purchased the motor but it needs to be moved forward from the firewall about 11/2 inches i need to make a box inside the cowel to mount the motor 11/2 inches deep attached to the firewall what wood does this box need to be? To mount the motor on Can it be block balsa or does it have to be ply? Or can it be just soft wood inside the front cowl kindest regards glen
Bob Cotsford
The usual way is to either build a 1/8" ply box or use 2" long 5mm bolts as stand-offs with tube sleeves to hold the motor the right distance out.
Richard Wood
Another way is to make up two 1/8" ply (not liteply) plates seperated by 4 lengths of 1/4" birch dowel epoxied into holes drilled into the corners. Cut the dowel lengths to suit the spacing required. Check alignment with a square when glueing. The rear ply plate is screwed or bolted to the firewall & the motor bolts onto the front plate. You'll need to make a hole in the motor plate where necessary to clear the shaft.
Allan Bennett
I have used both the long-bolt-with-spacers and the liteply box method. The liteply box (with regular ply front) has its advantages on a couple of my larger models in that it gives me a space to slide the battery further forward into, from the fuel tank bay. That's allowed me to get the c of g right without any extra lead. It also gives me a couple of flat sides that I can fasten the speed controller to. DH 82A
Also have a look at the ready made adjustable mounts from 4-max or Puffin models, etc.,
