christopher small
I have just started to build a new tailplane for my Radio Queen,on the tips either end I need 1/4 x1" soft balsa, but all I have is hard balsa, which will be slightly heavier, does it matter. Andy Green
Hi ChristopherI would say it doesn't matter, so long as you can get the balance point back. I tend to use harder wood for tips and LE's to help prevent hanger rash.As the tips are 1" wide it might be possible to make lightening holes in the tips, I have a selection of plumbers copper pipe (10mm, 15mm, 19mm & 25mm) with sharpened ends to 'bore' such holes.Andy
Allan Jordan
Hi Chris, Andy is right in his posting re. tailplane tips, it's a long time since I built a Radio Queen but from memory the tips are not very big so using harder balsa won't matter too much. Go for it ! Allan J
christopher small
Many thanks to both of you,I have now started on the tips.It should ballance OK as I will be putting an ASP 52 4 stroke up front.I might try and do as Andy says and put some lightening holes in,I have some hole saws to go in a drill. And hard balsa for the leading edge.Chris
Andy Green
ChrisThe drill type hole saws are to aggressive, find some old central heating pipe, and file the edge to a sharp cutting edge and rotate it back and forth to bore a hole. If the balsa tares then it's not shap enough.Andy
christopher small
AndyThanks for the advice,I should have various sizes of copper pipe ,so I shall have a go on some scrap balsa first.Chris
