Michael Denest
I'm visiting from the USA for a few months and would like to visit club fields around Wiltshire and other areas. I've already checked out the Salisbury MFC but unfortunately no one was there and the ground was quite soggy. I checked out the BMFA site but would like to know when some folks were going to be out, weather permitting! Regards, Mike Denest
Steve Hargreaves - Moderator
Welcome to the forum Michael.....after one of the wettest autumn/winter (so far) in the the UK for a very long time I suspect many model flying fields are more than a little bit soggy.....my own field (in the North West) is more like a rice paddy field than a runway at the moment... The BMFA website has a Club Finder section here so maybe you could find a few local clubs from there. On many Club websites there will be contact details so maybe give them a call & see when they will be out & about... I hope you enjoy your stay in the UK... Andy Shailer
Hi Mike, I fly at Salisbury model club, if you pm me I can give you numbers to ring, like Steve said I would think most clubs at the moment due to the weather we have had would be soggy, Salisbury just being one of them, my other club in Wareham is the same. Michael Denest
Yes, Old Sarum is a fantastic place, it's like a time warp back to 1917. I toured both the Boscombe Down and Army flying museums a couple of weekends ago. This weekend, I'm heading north to Wickenby to look at a Fairchild Cornell trainer being restored there. Steve Hargreaves - Moderator
Ah..you mean Old Sarum the airfield....? I had in mind Old Sarum as in the castle/abbey ruins.... Do make time to visit Stone Henge whilst you are so close & Avebury Stone Circle is well worth a visit too.... They don't fly but they do make fascinating viewing.... Michael Denest
I'll probably catch Old Sarum (the castle) on Sunday. I was here over 20 years ago and visited the Shuttleworth collection and Hendon. Duxford is a visit in the near future. Judging from what Percy said, five hours is not enough..... Michael Denest
They weren't kidding about the English weather......another soggy weekend so I might just console myself at Duxford. Still itching to get to a flying site but it's no use standing in a mud bog. Any brave souls slope soaring this weekend? Mike
Steve Hargreaves - Moderator
Mike I'd be the first to admit the British weather leaves a lot to be desired but this run of wet weather is unprecedented.....even we Brits are getting thoroughly fed up with it. Personally I can't remember a winter where I have flown less that this one. It HAS to get better soon!!!
David perry 1
Mike, check out flying druids / rollestone model flying consortium. Very nice bunch of guys and a great site. I live a stones throw from your new work place too. David
Michael Denest
The Druids look like an interesting club. It's sunny today and maybe if some of the members will be out, I'd like to take a drive there. How can I locate the flying site?
Colin Carpenter
Mike. Very windy today so doubt it. But I know its somewhere near the new Stonehenge centre. Before the road was closed past the stones I used to see planes flying just above the dip in the road out of Shrewton. Perhaps a mile or so before Airman's Cross. Hope this helps. Michael Denest
Oh good. I'm familiar with Airman's Cross. I'll do a google maps search to locate the field. Waiting for a nicer day......
Colin Carpenter
Mike. The map on my tablet is useless but my I phone map shows cars and toy planes down a tarmac path just before you start going downhill in Shrewton from the Cross. Even looks like a container there .Bingo !!!!! Colin
