Kev Cannon
Hi, i have just started buildingvtge Wot 4 Classic kit, it mentions that you have to glue together the bulkhead number 4, the bulkhelp in the kit us made from 1/8 ply and is a far better ply than what all the other formers are nade from. Would anyone know if this is correct as 1/8 bulkhead seem to thin ? Thanks Kevin
John Muir
Hi Kev, As I remember it the firewall is made up of 1/8 ply with balsa glued to the back. I think I managed to delaminate mine in a less than optimal landing on one occasion and had to stick it all back with copious amounts of epoxy. It held together fine for years after that. However when I built a new fuselage more recently I made the firewall from 1/4'' ply as I was never completely convinced the original arrangement was strong enough. Lots of these have been built as per the kit instructions so I assume it generally works ok. 1/8 ply on its own certainly wouldn't be strong enough though. John Lee
The bulkhead is made up of two 1/16 inch ply parts glued together to make a 6ply 1/8 inch firewall. As mine has survived through numerous adventures since the 80's I'd say it's strong enough!
