Colin Leighfield
aclk I don't know if anyone else subscribes to "New Atlas". It used to be called Gizmag and is free. It is full of fascinating things and many of those are aviation related. There is now an idea for cardboard delivery drones (fixed wing, not rotary) that are themselves the packaging and are not re-used. As flying machines they certainly look viable. Talk about controversial and all kinds of reactions are provoked by ideas like this. One thing is for sure, something is going to happen. I tried to copy a link and I don"t know if it has worked, but if you put "New Atlas" into Google you'll find it.
Colin Leighfield
For some reason the link I attached to the earlier email is coming up as Bangood! Ah well, but at least it's easy to find through Google. It is honestly worth a look just to see the very recognisable model flying wing design of these aerial packages. John F
The link to the article is here: **LINK** Interesting stuff. Would the electronics really "go with it" as the drone rots down though?
Colin Leighfield
Thank you John. I suppose that if they turned these things out in millions the electronics would become a "throw-away" cost item. You're right about them not being bio-degradable though! The other interesting point of course is that these things aren't powered. They would be released from some high level delivery system and glide down under directional control. It all sounds crazy but it is foolish to be surprised by anything these days. I'd look to see a plan for the flying parcel, it looks like it could make a very cheap slope soarer, good for flying combat and no really worries about replacement cost! Bob Cotsford
no, it really does imply that the electronics will decay rapidly too "The venture builds on and incorporates an earlier DARPA program called Vanishing Programmable Resources (VAPR), which is basically a research effort to develop self-destructing electronics as a way of stopping military gear from falling into the wrong hands." Cuban8
Give 'em half a chance and they'll be resurrecting this - fully biodegradable as well!..........**LINK**

Mark Kettle 1
Working on a powered wing myself at present made from cardboard, just finishing it off, servo's in and balances with a 1300 mah lipo in the nose. Should I put a cargo hold section in it? Mark Kettle 1
Underneath. Cut from a double skinned cardboard bicycle delivery box. The cardboard is 6 mm thick. Colin I wonder what wing span the drone is and what weight it can carry? Edited By Mark Kettle 1 on 27/01/2017 12:20:
Biggles' Elder Brother - Moderator
Nothing new here chaps - I have been building models entirely out of black bin bags for years - it saves time and effort later! BEB

Colin Leighfield
I'm glad I started this! Mark's effort is to be commended! The DARPA stuff says that those flown so far can carry a kilo, but that designs capable of carrying up to 10kgs are feasible. Tests have been carried out dropping these from C17s and they reckon range can be up to 55miles. They must be letting them go from a fair old altitude and I wonder what air speed to avoid these things breaking up? Bob's been reading the same stuff, where it describes the electronics being biodegradable as well. Fancy Cuban8 finding about bat bombs, I hadn't heard of that one. I see that they were Mexican bats as well, don't tell Donald Trump, it'll start to give him some new ideas. BEB might have the right idea though, a short cut directly to the black bin bag might cut out all of the pain in between! As he suggests, we've been doing that for years anyway. Mark Kettle 1
Instead of announcing 'take off' what do you say BEB? Thanks for the info Colin and comments.Edited By Mark Kettle 1 on 27/01/2017 18:23:
eflightray
Hmmm!, self-destructing electronics ? So you get a message on your phone, 'Order sent'. Followed by 'This package will self destruct 5 seconds after landing'. At least you can find where it landed, ..... look for the rising smoke Ray. Colin Leighfield
Essjay described a file converter app which I have downloaded and instantly converts photos to jpeg or png. I took screen shots of the three pages from New Atlas complete with the text, so although we've all uncovered this info now, here they are. It's certainly been intriguing. Colin Leighfield
My text in the previous posting has inserted itself in an odd place, five paragraphs up from the end!
Biggles' Elder Brother - Moderator
Oh-oh; modern technology meets creaking old forum software!! Every post an adventure! Chris's design is great - very clever! (Cannondale eh? Posh bike too!) BEB
Mark Kettle 1
Chris ? Who's is he? Because it may need a healthy throw to get it away I've put a launch lug underneath that doubles as a air duct. I'm pasting a second layer of brown paper on the bottom today. Colin Leighfield
Suddenly your cardboard creation is acquiring a look all of its own, good one Mark. You have fitted small end-plate fins, similar to the DARPA design and a bit like the AW52, do you think you would get enough stability without them? Biggles' Elder Brother - Moderator
A "Senior Moment" Mark! They creep up on you, my apologies Fred! BEB
Mark Kettle 1
That's Ok BEB, I knew who you meant. Colin as regards the wing tip ends. In the past I have flown when one of the wing tips has fallen off whilst flying. I found if I turned gently and slightly I could stay in the air, however if you flew normally like turns etc it was hard to stay airborne. Mark Kettle 1
Decorated it, it starts life from raw cardboard. Called it - '36 CB Arrow' - like the FliteTest mini Arrow. Edited By Mark Kettle 1 on 07/04/2017 11:48:
