Tim Ballinger
Cut and bent the u/c to shape today while waiting for glue to dry.
john stones 1 - Moderator
That looks very nice work Tim, i've a few dural u/c's so no bending for me. John
Tim Ballinger
I only have two existing u/c , one too big and one that is so old, battered and bodged I'd be ashamed to put it on a new model! Tim
Tim Ballinger
Finished all the top sheeting and front cowl followed by a lot of sanding. Must clear up the mess soon. That nose looks really long when you think we're the pilot would sit.
Tim Ballinger
The hatch feels really solid having used 4 sets of magnets. Not decided whether to use a mini latch as well or not yet. Perhaps I'll get used to relying on magnetism if I wait a bit.
Tim Ballinger
So although I do not yet have the right size prop I wanted to check motor position and prop clearence with the cowl. It's clear but only just so a bit more sanding required on the front.
john stones 1 - Moderator
Better a little longer nose than a big lumpa lead, looks like shaping the nose was enjoyable John
Lucas Hofman
This start to look like a very complete fuselage Tim. I have good experiences with hatches only hold by magnets, if - and only if - they magnets are kept well aligned. It looks like your hatch can slide to the side. Would if be an idea to use 2 little balsa lists to lock the hatch in place sidewise? Tim Ballinger
Thanks Lucas, It is currently restrained sideways only by the cutouts in the hatch end formers that fit over the longerons . I have been debating putting some 'tabs' on the inner side face which is what I think you are suggesting. Certainly going to need some form of pseudo handle like Lyndsy had or it will be nearly impossible to get off. Alternative is use two little latches to keep it straight but that seems to go against the concealed feature of the magnets....but would give something to grab when pulling it off. Lucas Hofman
The hatch end should be more then enough, if needed reinforced by a 6x3 mm list glued on the bottom. That will not make the hatch opening narrower - our hands are always too big. Forces on the hatch when flying are negligible, so if the magnets are so strong that you do not manage to open the hatch you may cut of the former ends so you can push it sideways until the magnets loose their grip. That is how I take off the Ballerina hatch (which has a dowel in front and magnets back. Lucas
Tim Ballinger
Just a battery tray today. Time to move on to the tailplane...

Lucas Hofman
Ample space for an ESC beside the battery. What concerns me a little is that there is little opportunity to use the battery for getting the CG right. In the Ballerina and the Tucano I had 20-25cm to move the battery back and forth. Tim Ballinger
Lucas, Funnily enough I was thinking about that when I made the tray so I dropped it down from f3 to the floor and there is room to slide the battery forward into the front cowl (i.e. Under the engine) . I have a piece of 6m square balsa in place which stops that atm but easy to remove I need to move the battery forward. I started the tailplane last night and my good intentions to laminate the le like you evaporated when I saw all the pre cut 6mm in the wood pack. Just too tempting. john stones 1 - Moderator
Coming on nicely Tim, stringers look good on yours, i've struggled a bit with the notches on mine, i'll have some filing to do on em. John
Tim Ballinger
Thank you John but I did of course have the ready cut formers from slec which I have to say were spot on. Tim
Lucas Hofman
How will you do the fairing Tim? With the Ballerina I made a dummy elevator and fin bit, glued together on the bench (to get them 90 degrees). These were covered with plastic tape that stayed in place until after covering the fuse. Tim Ballinger
Thanks for the thought Lucas, I was just going to shape it with just a support under the rear but filling in the gaps is a neat way of keeping it all solid and shapely. Tim Ballinger
Lucas, Is the infill between the stringers part of the plan or your idea. It looks quite smart.
john stones 1 - Moderator
The Ballerina plan shows infils Tim, courtesy of Peter Miller, copied it of me though
Tim Ballinger
thanks John, Think I might add that little feature. Tim
