winchweight
Ok chaps. First things first. I mistakenly sprayed the dark brown before the green. My bad, the overspray fromt he green looked awful, so I resprayed the dark brown afterwards. I have also spray the canopy, and I am now spraying the inside with smoke coloured paint from Pactra, and clear yellow from tamiya, trying for the elusive tinted gold leaf effect of the real thing.Hopefully the decals will arrive tomorrow. I will paint the pilot tonight, and have already painted the nose and jet pipe. Here's a tasterAnd of course a reminder of the effect I want
winchweight
I've just unmasked and test fitted the canopy..... too much tint.... bugg@r! The yellow works well if the light catches it right, but the canopy is almost opaque, so I needn't over detail the pilot as he's barely a shape in the cockpit now.Word of caution. The Pactra smoke tint is very thin and runny. Build the layers up in thin single coats, waiting half an hour between each. Ask me how I know.... One further note, spare fuselage parts are available here, as a complete airframe only kit but without the electrics etc.F16 Airframe Only

winchweight
Ok, hindsight moment. I wish I had attached the reinforcement tape to the bare foam on the lower fuselage section, and then painted it. Because it's white! Nevermind.Everything is epoxied in using Devcon 5 minute epoxy. To get a better adhesion, I pricked each foam surface a few times with the head of a jewellers crosshead screwdriver, to give the epoxy something to grip into. Especially where the esc velcro attaches.Ok, the DF, servos and esc are all installed! I wrapped the servos in electrical tape before epoxying them in. You need to cut a small notch for the cable.I then weighed all my lipos and they are all about 20-30g heavier than the lightest ones refered to in the book, so the DF has to be mounted 40mm back from the moulded lip. No dramas, but test the run direction first, as once it's in, the wires run beneath it. You need to cut channels for the servo wires and connectors to clear the DF unit.Once dry, I epoxied the servo plugs out of the way, again wrapped in electrical tape, so they don't flail around and come loose. Here's the canopy, I had to remove a little of the floor to clear the battery, but you can't see it as I was a bit heavy handed with the smoke spray paint.More later! Phil Winks
Hmm looking good Shaun and despite the excess tint I think it works. Ah good old pactra paints remember them well from my car modelling days. yes the tint is thin more of a lacquer than a paint hence the need to apply thinly. Any way once again good job mate just seen matt halton's vid of his SF what a sound eh
winchweight
Sounds awesome, hard to believe its a foamy.Well, I have just fitted the lower fuselage, absolute doddle to do. nearly finished!

Richard Sharman
The servos are EPOXIED in ??? what happens if you want to change them? or even move them to a new model? One of my servos just stripped a gear (must have had a bump somewhere) so replaced it as it's held in with screws, but if it was stuck......?Nice paint work, though! Phil Winks
Wrapping the servos in tape helps get them out if req Richard and being a foamie concentrates your mind when transporting so bumps less likely plus impacts to elevators absobed by the foam a bit so less likely to damage servos plus I get these size servos from giant cod at £1.98 plus P&P so the're disposable still reliable so far

Also the book recommend that the lower fuselage has only 3 or 4 dabs of epoxy each side, and even the DF has only 2 dabs to hold it in place, all just in case.Well, we are in the middle of a biblical deluge here, and I was trapped in the garage during the great monsoon. So the jet pipe is on, the all moving tail installed, the canopy glued onto the frame and finally the nose cone is on (4 dots of foam safe cyano... just in case. So, except for the decals, final trimming and installation of the rx, it's finished. Photos tomorrow as the camera was in the house. I have to say, it looks brill. One question, 'cos my lipos are quite heavy, the df is on it's rear position. this means the jet pipe over hangs the dummy tail pipe by about 40mm. Can I cut it off flush with the tail pipe, or are they a "tuned length?" Jetsome? Also, I have salvaged the missiles off my Sea Fury and they will adorn the wing tips of my F16! Bruce Richards
I asked the same question about the tube sticking out the back and never got an answer. Please keep us posted on what you decide to do.
Phil Winks
Very nice Shaun I don't think the jet pipe is to much of an issue looks ok as it is. wouldn't be suprised if the lenght not critical though have you tried emailing the manufacturers? winchweight
Not yet, I just wondered if the local expertise could tell me.
Richard Sharman
The tailpipe length is very unlikely to be "tuned" in the sense that an i.c engine with tuned pipe exhaust is "tuned". However, tailpipe length is important for ducted fans, and will usually decrease thrust with increasing length. The other consideration is whether the tailpipe is shaped (increasing or decreasing diameter with length)? In general I would say that shortening the tailpipe will probably help rather than hinder.PS. I still can't believe that servos are disposable - must be my age! Phil Winks
Just a sign of the time Richard took me a while to trust these cheapies still not suitible for hi stress applications but fine in smaller models oh and Jetsome it wasn't me that compared tin full tin emoty weights I asked how much of it is solvents lol
Tim Mackey
Agree with all the above...eflux tube slightly shorter will probably help - just ensure it reaches the very end of the "fake tail pie" and perhaps a mm or 2 beyond to aid the smooth flow.
