Roo Hawkins
I have just started a ash 31 build it will be my 9th scratch build and will be my biggest build so far. I built a smaller ash 31 a while ago at 5 meters but wish I built it in 1/3 scale .started today with the foam plug. Andy Meade
I always follow your builds on RCG Roo, great stuff and inspiring. I wish you'd make a mold of one of these fuselages you know!

Martyn K
Following with interest Roo. That fus looks very skinny at the back end. How do you protect against whiplash? Martyn
Roo Hawkins
Hi Andy rich and Martyn. I have stopped using RCG for posting builds and now only use this forum and scalesoaring UK Forum although I have not posted this build yet. RCG I think has got a bit nasty with some of the posts. The ASH 31 has a very thin tail boom so has to have more carbon added so the plug is made a bit thinner there because of this.
Andy Meade
Hi Roo, shame to hear that. I've been a long time subscriber to SSUK, but it always seems so quiet! Glad we can follow along here anyway
Nigel R
Crikey, 7 metres is a big boy!How long is the fuse on this build?
Roo Hawkins
Fuz is 2400 mm long. I am doing all the foam work and cutting the wings first then hopefully start carbon and glassing in the autumn. I have some other gliders to sort out first.
Roo Hawkins
I have done not much work on the ash the last few weeks. But today I have made a start on the wings blanks all 7 meters of them plus aerofoil templates really for hot wire cutting. Will post pictures soon Edited By Roo Hawkins on 26/06/2018 17:13:

Martyn K
Wow. What hot wire cutter do you use Roo? Martyn
Roo Hawkins
Hi it is a homemade one. Made from one of them donut transform things that I got from maplin a few years ago. It is 25 v works directly to the bow. The bow is 49 in long and I can control the temp by moving the wires closer together. If you want more information give me a few days and I will let you know more plus picture. Dead simple to make and I have used it for years. Roo Hawkins
No David it was about 6.6kg. The 5 meter one was OK but there was a bit to much wing flex for my liking. I like the glider but wished I made it bigger so I started this one.
Nigel R
Looking good. I would guess, you are vacuuming the wings? For the fuse, do you melt out the foam with thinners, or similar?
Roo Hawkins
I will usemail a old chisel and pick the foam out front and melt the rest out with petrol. Not sure how I am doing the wings yet I have a number of ways to do them. Maybe full carbon or a carbon and veneer mix. I do not vac bag but will press them.
