Fred Keegan
Waiting for the post to arrive with lightweight glass cloth for the wings. I made a pair of mock guns for the front turret, balsa for the shape then clad in plastic card for ease of painting. Postman just arrived I can start to clad the wings. FRED. Klippy
I see you've got the thrust line parallel to the centre line of the aircraft, all the 3 views show the thrust line at 90degrees to the leading edge,is this going to make a difference?Looks wonderful though. Fred Keegan
Hi Tony, it's built to the plan and CNC cut parts and the prototype has flown, but on my three view dawings it shows the engines 90 degrees to the leading edge. Klippy
Being anal retentive in terms of scale I thought I should 'ring the bell' As an aside, did you know that the outboard floats were mounted on shock absorbers with about 6" of movement for rough see landings?Am I right in thinking that the Flap cutouts on the upper surface are tapered? My MkIII drawing shows them parallel and tapered on the underside.Keep building! I love your attention to detail.
Fred Keegan
No flaps on my model, I am building it as per Tony Nijhuis design and plans. fred.
Klippy
Have discovered,I think, that the out-thrust was to give airflow over the tail feathers for better control during docking procedures. The tradeoff was a slight reduction in forward efficiency. Sorry to hear that Tony didn't attempt the flaps, I'm finding it very difficult to find info about them, size (width) and direction of movement, rotational or linear, or I suspect, both. martyn sharp
Thanks for the reply Fred just a quick question if you don't mind is there enough room to install 2 of these in the fuselage instead of 4 batteries (looking at a early Christmas present )thanks Martyn
Fred Keegan
Yes lots of room, I am using two batterys, one driving the outer props and one the inners. If one goes down the you still have a motor running on each side of the wing( have to save up for the batterys ) Fred
martyn sharp
Thanks so much Fred, I will be doing the same thing and yes the battery's are expensive, but i,v been saving over the pass year to purchase and build this model nearly there I hope and i will add lights as well. Mike P
Hello Fred, What did you use for the cross wires on the float struts and what cunning idea did you have in securing them, they look great. Many thanks Mike P.
Fred Keegan
I used fine piano wire soldered on the cross. As you can see on the picture the float struts are on a taper, drill two holes in each strut, when you assemble it together it locks the wire in, I just ran a drop of thin cyno in each of the 4 locating holes. The struts are 1/2 inch streamline aluminium tube from K&S. Fred

Fred Keegan
Just about ready for paint,. no rush, will have to find somewhere to spray the main white primer coat, then I can hand paint the rest indoors. then out again for a satin varnish to keep the fingermarks off the mat paints. Fred Keegan
Nice day today I managed to get the white base coat on the wing, then take inside for hand painting with Humbrol. The colours are a bit darker than on the picture Humbrol 102 123. Fred
andy watson
Hi FredGreat blog, which I have been following with interest. Can I ask how you found the finish with the hand painting (I presume you mean with a brush!I am thinking about my next build, and have been working on the assumption that to get a good camoflage/warbird type finish would require an airbrush- which I can't afford!
Fred Keegan
I would only brush with mat paints, My problem is I have to spray outside. the cheap airbrush is OK the exspencive ones are for the skilled painters. The finish in the mat paint can always be treated to a going over with T-CUT to get a nice finish. I will do the wing when the paint is hardend offf. Fred PS £12 will get you an Airbrush, or look on Ebay.
