Red5 MEGA glider 1.5M

Recommended Posts

Yes, I have bought a big foam Glider.

After watching the video and seeing how cheep i could get one for i thought i might as well get one to see if i could convert it to Rc.

So i received a box from MenKind measuring 15" x 6" x 30" .
Oh goody i thought inside this box was a smaller box 10" x 6" x 21".
Oh and a free bag of Haribo Starmix.
With discount code i paid £8 + £3 p+p.
So opening the box the model i got is Similar to that in the video.
But with different shaped fins and wing but looking more space age.
Sadly it is made out of styrofoam and already has dints in it.
So the challenge will be to see if i can convert it to Radio Control.

Ok so i will have to glass the parts to help stop further dents.

But here is what i am thinking ...........

Two pusher motors behind the two mid wing fins , they should be able to provide yaw as well as thrust.

Cut away the control surface and make new .

I will also have to add carbon tube for support in the wings .

Hmmm.... some more thinking i will do.

Hello their,

Well its been in the loft for a while so it is time i did something with it.

mg body s.jpg

So after much thought i decided , just build it after gluing the wings together it seems it may be ok without any Carbon fiber .

So i am going for a light build.

I have cut the cockpit free.

Hi,

Just thought i would share some pictures with you i have started to cover my Converted Mega Glider in colored tissue paper to give it some color .

mega glider tissue sml.jpg

As a added bonus it has also added extra strength as i used Poly C to applied the tissue and finish.

I have a bit more to do but it is Mega hot in my loft at present.

Hi Phil,

Of coarse i remember you, and you are not the 1st person to mention that it looks like a Romulan Bird of Prey.

Klingon Bop.

In fact if you listen carefully at 1:57 to the video above you can hear someone shout out.

My club field is in prestwich Manchester as i am in Bury Metro Model Flying Club bmmfc.com.

And yes i am desperate to get back on the slopes.

Cheers Steve

I bought this a little while back with a conversion in mind and whilst having a clearout was thinking about getting rid but, having seen your success, I think I have to give it a go!

Was it fine without a spar? I tried using brown paper and pva covering recently and I think it might work nicely on this.

Hi Thomas, And welcome to this Forum it is a great place to ask questions or give advice to other like minded folk.

Was it fine without a spar ?. Yes

Brown paper should be fine should also give it extra strength i have used brown paper myself on foam models .

On mine i did not want to spend the extra time painting it and i wanted to keep it light that is why i used color tissue on the plus side it has also given it a little extra strength .

The AuW of my model is 520g and it has plenty of power from the motors.

Here are the specs for mine.

Lipo battery 3s 1300ma

Frsky Rx V8R7 11

1 Bec

2 x 12a Multistar Esc

2 x Multistar Viking 1308 - 4100Kv Motors CW / CCW

2 x 5g servos outboard

2 x 9g servos inboard .

Let us know how you get on with yours and if you can take pictures all the better.

Cheers Steve.

Thanks Steve, that's very good of you to send all the specs - the beauty of these forums and this hobby I suppose (all fairly new to me).

I had thought about mounting a folding prop on the nose but your solution is much more elegant. I'll start having a think and and post a kind of build log in here too.

Cheers, Tom
